New Tinnitus — Is There Any Hope For My Tinnitus Going Away?

Tinnitus Since
9/17/14
So, my story is that a little over a week ago, I noticed a loud ringing while I was trying to sleep. The next day I noticed it hadn't gone away, and I was getting dizzy spells with some nausea. I decided that 4 days later that I should go to the ER, not knowing what was going on. When I went in, they did a CT scan to see if there was a tumor, and there was nothing. When I told them I was on buspar/hydroxzyine, I was told to get off the medicine because it could be a side effect. I've been off the buspar a week today, and the hxdroxzyine for about 5 days. I went to my regular doctor 2 days after the ER visit and told there was some fluid behind my ears, and that my eardrum was not moving when they had me hold me nose and blow. I was not sick before this happened, but I have been on a nasal steroid for a few days, and taking anti-allergy medicine (though I do not have allergies). I have an appointment to see an ENT this Wednesday, but I'm afraid that it may be too late and it could be permanent. Is there any hope that it can go away if the fluid goes away, or if I have it looked at within 2 weeks of the onset? I've read a lot of people getting blown off saying "wait a few weeks," but I don't want to sit around doing nothing and having it be too late to fix. Any advice would be wonderful, as well as if there are any stories of people having this constant ringing go away after a while. I have read a lot of people having this problem for years, and I am really afraid. Thank you again for your time.

No no no, don't be scared at all dude you're fine.
They can fix the fluid with a really really easy surgery where they basically put a small tube that lets the fluid out after that you will be Tinnitus free.
BE HAPPY MAN seriously because when you get that fluid fix you'll have silence again.
Please please don't worry, I promise you'll be fine.

I guess I'm just afraid that it isn't the fluid that is causing it, though it would make sense since it is there. How long does it usually take the fluid to drain by itself? I've had the ringing for a week and a half now. Also, thank you again for your reply, it is very much appreciated. I guess I was just wanting other opinions as well, just to see what others think, but haven't really been getting any other support.

Tubes is something not allways advicable as you destroy fine eardum to intervent. See tuboplasty, new and expensive technique.

Make sure you get some cortisone to save some hearing cells. 10 day course. It helps to open up the tubes they said. Get a hearing test + high frequencies upto 16khz, start magnesium, start NAC, start vitamin B12, acupuncture and pray.

Mine is now 2/10 but so much more trouble got here. If it ever goes away I cry for 3 days and donate to the ATA.

Sick and tired of it. Do whatever you can to eliminate it.

Take enough sleep. The brain works 2 times harder in sleep mode than awake.

Thank you for the reply. What exactly is NAC? Also, what all have you tried and what has helped? I just for past a year of severe anxiety and a month later after getting better I develop this ringing. I'm really, really afraid.

Not uncommon for T to start after anxiety.. I did ocassional Lorazepam for anxiety before T start.

I tried a lot:
-TMJ treatment
-Oral cortisone
-B12
-Ginko
-Neck treatment
-CBT (did not do it, need different psychologist)
-N-Acetylcysteine (NAC).
-Acupuncture
-Bite splint for TMJ

And I'm going to try a lot. Every single day I'm fighting. Every single week some improvement.
Large setbacks to. It's like running up a hill with rocks been thrown at you.

I don't think I have any jaw or neck issues, and I've never been to a concert or listen to loud music, but I was by a dog whistle for about 5 minutes being used the same day I noticed the t

So many people think thay have no neck / jaw issues, but they have. At least get yourself examined by a chiropractor / osteopathy. ENT's don't know anything about physical problems that effect T.

Hi, Rief,

Most natural supplements take some time before they show any results. I'd give the gingko at least a month to see if it makes any difference.

For me, the gingko biloba didn't really work, and it actually exacerbated my tinnitus. Gingko increases blood flow to the area, and I also have pulsatile tinnitus, so it turned out not to be a good choice for me.

Other supplements you might try are: Vinpocetine, B vitamins, NAC, and magnesium. I take magnesium chloride, but there are other types of magnesium that are also effective. Also, some people have found that melatonin helps their tinnitus.

The main things you should do right now are to make sure you get enough sleep (often difficult right at first!), maintain a healthy diet (limit caffeine, alcohol, and sugar, to see if it makes any difference in your tinnitus), get plenty of exercise, try to stay calm, and live your life as normally as possible. Tinnitus may fade in time, or your brain may get used to it (habituation). This is a process that varies with the individual, but can happen if you give it some time.

Also, there are various tinnitus treatments in clinical trials right now that we may hear about in the near future. If there is a treatment that really works, I'm sure we'll hear about it here on Tinnitus Talk.

Take care, and keep us posted on how you're doing!

Best wishes,
Karen

Thanks again for the comments I've had so far. I went to the ent and found out the fluid had already gone away, but the t and dizziness is still around. I've been put on prednisone, but no improvement in 4 days. I have to get a mri in the future, but it still sucks. Going to wait for the pred to finish before trying magnesium and other stuff

Could a dog whistle cause tinnitus? I realized the day I noticed it first I had downloaded an app and used it for about 5 minutes to see if a neighbor dog would be quiet.

I went in for a check up today, and was given ofloxacin and hydrochlorot to see if either would be helpful. I had a bad dizzy spell today driving, and was told that there is still fluid in my ears (which the ENT said there was none, but if could have gone away and came back, I don't know). Does anyone have any positive/negative experiences with the ofloxacin or hydrochlorot, I haven't been able to find much information about it.

Technically a dog whistle couldn't because the human ear simply can't detect frequencies above 20 000 Hz, and only babies and little kids can detect 20 000 Hz that's why some kids get car sick a lot ( I did) they can hear a lot of the vibrations and stuff so the feel it harder, it explains why I'm never car sick any more but when I was a kid 1-2 puke incidents during a trip to the country side were normal.
As for it hasn't gone away.
1.) You don't have hearing cell damage (guessing because you don't go to concerts and such)
2.) It takes time, I got mine from only the 2nd gig I went to in my life, it has gone down a lot in 2 months but it'll be another 2-4 months until it's gone.
3.) Also the stress didn't help I gave myself really sensitive hearing to some frequencies because I was scared and listened to every little sound
4.) Don't worry please, I promise you you'll be fine
This is most likely not the case but if you haven't get a test for Meiner's, also I'm far from any medical knowledge, but it may be something inside your ear, most likely fluid but maybe a bone or something ears are what gives us balance so it's most likely fluid or something like that which is treatable easily enough.
Please don't worry :)
Best of luck.

I had it as an app, and when I turned it on it jumped from 5000hz to 10000hz really quickly/loudly, but I'm still not sure what caused the tinnitus. The only issues I really have with it is before bed, but I do get scared about it staying or getting worse. I've been trying to do a little more research on the hydrochlorot and ofloxacin, but without much luck. My last prednisone dose is tomorrow, and I'm going to start trying zinc/magnesium to see if it helps. I also got a call back for an AM-101 study close to me, but I need to get back to them later today or Monday.

Hey there @Rief, you're doing all the right things: going to the doctor etc. Karen was right, it's hard, but try to sleep and keep coming here for support if it helps.

As to the question posed for this thread - yes, there is hope for your tinnitus going away. Yours is very new, it's so early. I know it's not something you want to think about right now, but even if it doesn't go away, you really can be okay.

Take care and let us know how it goes. :huganimation:

I guess I just expected that there would be some type of improvement during this month, and if it isn't starting after this long then maybe it won't ever.

I've tried looking up more information about the ofloxacin and hydrochlorot but to no solid results. Does anybody by chance any any information about them? I haven't taken them yet because of fear of them making it worse.

@Rief could there any possible way you could have allergies i do have fluid in my ear due to allergies i had T for the pass 8 months it get better take lots of hot showers buy a humidifier a steamer but most importantly see a allergies specialist im working to see if i colud see a allergy specialist Fluid in the Ear means that your Eustan tube is blocked

Chill, you've had T only for 1 month. You have good chance for it going away in 12 months.

Get Vitamins, Magnesium, Ginko and perhaps NAC. Enrich your sound environment with sounds which include the frequencies around your T as well (there is plenty in youtube).

I highly doubt that your phone speaker could produce so loud sound that could damage your hearing if you listen to it for couple of seconds when holding it in your hand.

Technically a dog whistle couldn't because the human ear simply can't detect frequencies above 20 000 Hz
Best of luck.
Even though you can't detect some frequencies, it doesn't mean that It couldn't damage your hearing. For example if you have mostly lost your hearing in frequencies above 16kHz, you would still get your ear damaged if you listen 17kHz sound @ 150dB even though you can't hear it.

I don't like to just relax about it, I would think that something inside the body would start to heal within the 4 weeks with some type of improvement, and since it hasn't, been wanting to see about how other things, such as the medicine, could help or hurt, but I still haven't found much information on it.

@Rief It's very difficult, and I know I couldn't even take the advice I'm giving now when I was in your shoes because I was too scared, but the best thing to do is actually to relax (after you've done all the doctoring you can do to make sure it's not a tumor or menieres etc.).

This isn't just because relaxing is some kind of good thing to do, it's because relaxing helps put your brain on a path to letting the T be a background noise and letting you sleep. Both of those (especially sleep!) are big for healing physically and mentally.

T can go away after months or years. A month is not long, but since you had dizziness and nausea when yours started, I would really keep going to the doctors until you really feel you've exhausted all options. I am NOT a doctor, but people who have symptoms like nausea and dizziness usually have something going on other than sound damage (so probably not your smart phone). I had loud noise induced tinnitus and had no dizziness etc.

Most of all, just plant the seed of a thought in the back of your mind, even if it feels like giving up now to acknowledge it, that even if your T doesn't go away, you can absolutely be fine. Mine is still buzzing away, but my life is full and happy and good. It wasn't always that way, but it will get there. You don't have to suffer with T.

Hang in there.
