Cause of Tinnitus
Loud Noise Exposure
Hey guys,

I was talking on the phone on speaker yesterday but I couldn't hear the person on the other end. I took it off speaker briefly and put the phone by my good ear on low volume but with my luck my phone's low battery alert went off right by my ear which was extremely loud and caused me great discomfort. A few hours later a new tone emerged in my left ear.

Should I take prednisone for this? Please advise. I can't lose my good ear :(

Hi Friends,

I have been pretty active on this forum for the past year. I have had debilitating tinnitus for about a year. I got it a week before my 21st birthday, and my 22nd birthday is just around the corner. I am going through a bad spike in my left ear due to an unfortunate phone incident that happened a few days ago.

I try to be so careful and I still get unavoidable setbacks. My main tinnitus tone in my right ear is at an all-time high. Less than a month ago, I would have a good day every now and then. Now my good days have disappeared. I don't know why. The phone incident was isolated to my left ear, and my right ear had been at an all-time high before that had occurred. I cannot pinpoint a reason as to why my tinnitus had suddenly reverted to a state it was in when this all started for me a year ago.

I also suffer from horrible noise distortions. Fans, air purifiers, showers, running water, etc, are all distorted to me. They do not provide me with any relief.

I feel as though I am at my wits' end. I have been fighting this thing tooth and nail for the past year. I emptied my savings on Lenire and it didn't work for me. I really want to apply for graduate school but tinnitus has debilitated me to an extent where I am unable to.

The only reprieve I have is when I get extreme migraines at the end of the month when I go off my birth control. I have dealt with these migraines long before tinnitus, but I was always too lazy to switch birth controls. Now, I look forward to these extreme migraines because for some reason they calm down my tinnitus. I do not take any sort of painkillers when these migraines occur. Although my head feels like it's going to shatter from pain, my tinnitus is lower and I can't help but wish these migraines would last because I can handle the pain so much better.

My family does not understand why I have not gotten used to tinnitus yet. I try to explain how debilitating it is combined with the noise distortions I experience, but they do not understand.

I am trying to hang on for a cure but it gets harder by the minute.

Thanks for listening.

Wow for wishing a splitting migraine last longer just to have lower tinnitus... is your tinnitus that bad???

How are you doing? I just had my phone make a very loud beep at the end of a voice message. I had it on speaker phone at the time. I ended up calling back to measure it with my decibel meter. The voicemail of the other person was around 70 dB but the beep at the end was over 115 dB. I don't even know how that's possible.

WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD?!

WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD?!

I don't know, but sometimes I feel like the universe is out to get me.

Earlier this week I was talking to someone in the parking lot. I had earplugs in, but I pulled them out so I could hear them better. Immediately after pulling my hearing plugs out someone right next to us honks their car horn. You just cannot avoid loud noises in modern society.

I think I'll be okay, but it's frustrating. I have very reactive ears.

My sympathies - I just moved into a hotel room for the sole reason of being somewhere more quiet than my home, so I feel you on reactivity. 2 months in and things like chewing pretzels, typing on a keyboard, and a million other things cause micro spikes... I don't have pain hyperacusis but right now my ears are approximately as sensitive.

Do you sleep with sound therapy on?

I came across a guy called Rupert Brown, if you Google him you can read his story.

He has a really nice library of sound therapy that he's created, you can get as an iPhone app or stream via Spotify.

It might help you out, it's benefited me a fair bit. I still have tinnitus but it's improved since I've been using his sounds.

OMG. It happened to me again. I tried leaving a voicemail with a different person and at the end of their message there was this incredibly loud beep. I recreated it with earplugs and earmuffs on and it was 119 dB! That's with the meter a few inches away from my phone.

How is this possible? Can someone help me, I can't leave voicemails without fear of my ears getting zapped. Is this a problem with my phone or with the voicemail system? It always seems to be a problem with Mitel voicemail messages, I can leave voicemail with other people that have voicemail with cell phone carriers and it does not have this loud beep.

*Sorry, I don't mean to hijack the thread. Maybe I should make a new thread about this issue.

Sometimes I solipsistically believe I'm in a simulation and things like this are the sim creators introducing weird shit to fuck with me - like how much can he take... okay put the noise on phones now. Okay now make him believe a whole community of people have the noise, let's see if that ups his tolerance for suffering. But don't make it too hard - let him believe a cure is always just 5 years off - we can't have him end the sim too quickly.

@ Sim creators, I'm ready for you to test my tolerance to fantastic wealth - this test is boring.

Hi, I always try to put the phone on speaker and away from my ears. I've just gotten into a habit of doing this, especially since the dreaded phone beep. In terms of how I'm getting along, I think the beep caused some permanent damage to my left ear, because it randomly spikes very badly ever since the incident, but I'm hoping it'll continue to improve with time.

Rest your ears, try to stay away from anything loud right next to your ear for a while. You'll get better!

I do sleep with sound therapy on, but just one from YouTube. I will check this out, thank you so much!

My threshold for pain is high as I've dealt with pretty bad chronic pain from various things throughout my life, but my tinnitus and distortion debilitates me mentally and physically.

That's the problem. I always put it on speaker, but with certain voicemail carriers it seems to trigger your phone to emit the loudest beep that your phone is capable of making. If it's on speaker phone it is just that much louder. I have a galaxy s9+ and that has a loud speaker.

I totally get what you mean. I'm not sure if you can do this but I like to gently cover the speaker of my phone with finger, so that I can still hear the beep but its muffled and not piercing.

Also, just another thing that's unrelated that I might be helpful overall is if you have the sound assistant app on your S9 you can change the number of "steps" between the lowest your phone volume can go and the highest. So you can increase your phone volume in smaller increments which I think is helpful cause sometimes even going up one level can be much louder than you expect, or can suddenly increase the volume too much.

Hope this helps!

So, I just tried calling the same number with someone else's phone. It made the same loud beep. This is not a normal dial tone beep, or low battery beep. It's louder than anything I've heard my phone make.

I'm starting to think it's a problem with the voicemail system some companies use (I believe it's Mitel). IMHO if it is indeed the third party voicemail system that is causing peoples phone to make 115+db noises when it's set to a normal volume, that really opens them up to lawsuits if they damage people's hearing. That's a huge liability issue.

Thanks. I'll try the sound assistant app. Is there a way to limit the max volume on the phone?

Yes that's an exceedingly loud beep and a huge liability issue.

In regards to setting a max limit, try going to your Settings, then sound and vibrations, volume, click the three vertical dots for more options and then click media volume limit.

Let me know if that works!

Phones are tricky... pretty bad...
