Cause of Tinnitus
Uncertain, now very somatic, started with noise?
Several tinnitus sufferers hear a very specific tone and can determine its pitch.

Does your tinnitus also have a pitch, or is it different, like white noise or hissing or still completely different?

I put unsure because depending on the day, it can either be a tone or a hiss. I think the tone is somewhere around 5000hz. When it's hiss there is some seriously freaky high pitches in there

Got two sounds. One in my head is high frequency and the other one in my right ear sounds like a kettle.... But I find it complicated to describe what it sounds like.

mine sounds like a high pitched electrical sound crossed with air leaking from a tire and can hear over the TV almost everything but the shower. Thank God I am pretty much habituated but when bored its always playing its tune...

You really have to except T no matter what the tone is for there is only one thing that works to get relief is habituation. Go on with your life with some small modifications and after a period of time it wont seem so dam invasive. I can now go for hours and my brain focuses on other things and the T kind of fades into the background where you dont hear it. I cut sugar, msg, limited alcohol, salt and do exercise such as weight training, yoga or tai chi. At night play nature sounds on you tube..If need be take a valium befor bed if you have trouble sleeping...Please consult with your doctor about exercise and sleep aids. I do where ear protection in noisy atmosphere.....

high pitched dentist drill
cant be masked.

As a main sound I have an high frequency hiss and a pure tone as well, it is a bit hard to distinguish which is the predominant one. In addition I have a low drone sound in one ear which fortunately is quite soft and I can hear only in silence

Has anyone made a measurement of the frequency and intensity or volume of tinnitus?

I did a tinnitus volume matching test where they test your sensory level, then have you match the tinnitus volume to a tone they slowly ramp up. It was always around 32-33DbSL or decibels over sensory level for me. This was done multiple times over the course of months and it was always the same.

I've heard most tinnitus is 10dbsl or lower, but I don't know if there's much date on this. Note, that's very different from masking level.

I did a test and got him to stop at 70db, still no match, but it was hurting my ears, I would put my sounds at over 80db.

Crazy. That was match not mask right? I cannot mask my T (well the shower does sometimes). Heavy traffic, airplanes, etc. do not mask it at all.

I would imagine T that loud would make it very difficult to hear speech. Can you understand people when they are talking?

I read somewhere that 90% or so is 10dbsl or under. But I can't seem to find the source. Note that is offset by your sensory level, so if your sensory level is say 20db in that frequency range then 40db is 20dbsl.

Yes I have to ask people to repeat all the time, I have never found a sound loud enough to mask my tinnitus.

Yes, ENT and audiologists say there is no tinnitus greater than 10dB. Now, an audiologist told me that the maximum of a tinnitus is 20dB which is already a big difference. ENT told me: I'll ask to measure the volume of your tinnitus, to show you how low it is, then maybe you'll get better knowing that. I had already done this exam and nothing had changed in my symptoms to know the volume of my tinnitus.
