Tinnitus Since
5 years
Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown
My tinnitus recently spiked from a loud car exhaust about 60 ft away, I still have some anxiety about how loud it was, but my tinnitus increased so much that I can't sleep deeply now.

I realized also that I don't sleep well in general with tinnitus as I used to love to silence.

I have tried white noise, all kinds, and I feel a little desperate.

Is it even possible to get deep sleep with a loud and high pitched tinnitus?

Have you tried taking amitriptyline? It is non-addictive and it doesn't make you drowsy the next day.

this is the best thing to use...hope this helps...merges with my high pitch T...cant even tell its there

My T is ultra high pitch so the above video has no chance to mask it. I find cicadas, heavy rain, shower, even squeaky faucet can help mask mine. This one is cicadas plus some high pitch ACRN tones. It may be harsh to hear at first but you probably can't hear T with this. (Turn the volume low first)

If you like to try natural alternatives for sleep, Melatonin is often suggested. But there are others suggested for insomnia by this site:

&billie48 - I find Melatonin (Circadin 2ml) quite incredible for longer, deeper, untroubled sleep.
The tablet is just 2ml, and I cut it in half with a pill-cutter, and it still works really well.
Quite incredible. No side effects either.
Just a thought,

I would start with keeping off computer and phone an hour before bed and a bath and warm drink and take Melatonin.
If you need anything long term then a low antidepressant like Amitriptyline 10 -20 mg will help and better than becoming adicted to sleeping tablets.
Love glynis

Sleep Tea from Bigelow helps me with sleep every night. I drink it about an hour before bed and then fart around on my tablet and I start to nod off pretty heavily. I definitely didn't do that before taking this tea. I usually have pretty consistent sleep every night as well. Not sure if it'll help you as much. I too have high pitched T but it's likely not as loud as yours. Still, these kinds of tea can be pretty beneficial I've found.

You have had tinnitus for quite a while. Although you haven't said what caused it or cause unknown. The fact that your tinnitus spiked from a loud car exhaust 60ft away, I suspect that your tinnitus was originally caused by "exposure" to loud noise. If this is the case I doubt the loud noise from the exhaust was the main cause of your tinnitus spiking. It may have just been the straw the broke the camel's back. If you have been using headphones or going to places where loud music is played. Or working in a noisy environment without using hearing protection. Any of these things over time would make your auditory system more sensitive to sound.

Since you have had tinnitus for 5 years I would have expected you to have habituated by now. If you did habituate, the likely cause of your tinnitus spiking is "exposure" to loud noise. Either it has previously spiked but calmed down in a short period of time so this did not concern you greatly. However, and I'm only guessing here: it likely your tinnitus has "spiked" a few times and calmed down as before but this time, it hasn't reduced and is now causing you problems sleeping.

Tinnitus caused by exposure to loud noise rarely spikes or gets worse by itself. Something usually causes it and it's usually "loud music/sound". Whatever it is you're doing, if it's using headphones or going to clubs, concerts etc you need to be more careful. If you are using headphones I advise not to use them again even at low volume.

Talk to your doctor and see whether something can be prescribed to help with your stress and enable you to sleep better. Use sound enrichment at night. I suggest you get a referral to ENT if the spike doesn't calm down and then see a Hearing Therapist or Audiologist whose trained in the treatment and management of tinnitus and hyperacusis. I suspect that you may have hyperacusis that hasn't been treated? If this is so then you need to seek help for this. Please click on the links below and read my posts that you may find helpful.

All the best

Do you think it's the tea or the fart(ing around on the tablet) that helps?

It's definitely the tea. My nightly ritual is sitting up in bed with my wife before we actually settle in to sleep. I have always played around on my tablet and never nodded off. The tea totally makes me start to nod off though. Even drooled on myself a couple times.... lol

I don't like to take pills because it always has side effects some way or another. So I work out and take a nice hot shower and sleep with the fan on that's my white noise. Good luck brother... CURLY

yeah stay away from pills for as long as possible...

Dam man if that sound doesnt work for you im shocked....did you put the volume up higher? At low volumes i can still hear mine

Oh yes, I need to crank it up loud to have some chance against my 'dentist drill' T. LOL. But I don't recommend too loud to overpower T. Set it slightly below T level so the brain will learn to get used to the T sound.
