Cause of Tinnitus
no sure
So I've been on holidays from work for a week, just staying home which I thought would be great since it's fairly quiet.

I have spent most of the week reading, although I've also been sick as well with a stomach bug. Great Christmas for me. Normally I don't tend to wear my earplugs at home.

Today and Yesterday I've noticed my ears have been rather, reactive. I know people don't believe in reactive tinnitus but my ears have been reacting. It's currently extremely hot here in Australia. Early 30's here in Sydney. So I've had my air con on quiet a bit. I never realized how much my ears react to it until the last 24 hours. I don't remember it ever being this bad, but it's like my ears go even more high pitched with it on but the moment I turn it off it goes away.

Anyway tonight they seemed a bit more irritated than normal. Currently decibels in the house are in the 40's never goes above that. Which is why I don't wear my earplugs and like I said I have been reading in quiet.

Anyway decided to put my earplugs in just now, no idea why, and I've noticed a new fluctuating tone in my right ear. I feel like it never ends and I know I've been sick and all vitamins have probably left my body so I'm probably lacking in a lot of things and I'm trying to tell myself this is the reason why.

There is no reason why my ears should have gotten worse, none at all. But my anxiety has just gone haywire now. I just really needed to vent. This is not how I envisioned my two weeks' off at home.

@Fally,
Tinnitus can spike and change sound and add sound for a reason and sometimes for no reason.
Be kind to yourself and keep soft music on to relax you and a distraction.

I find air conditioning really loud and keeps me awake when stay in hotels as don't have it at home .
Hope you get to have a lovely New Years Eve.

love glynis

I know. I've been trying to tell myself that last few hours. Sometimes it changes and there is nothing you can do about it and it's not your fault. I tend to keep this mantra up sometimes lol.

I am use it at home wouldn't be able to live where I do and not have it, especially in this heat. I even turned it off at one point and within half an hour was drenched in sweat. Air con is pretty quiet here I even tested it.

Thank you Glynis, I plan to stay home and read a good book. I hope you have a lovely new year's eve as well :)

Some foods can spike tinnitus. Dairy foods do it for me. There is also just random fluctuation. It makes sense to focus on the monthly trend, and to try to ignore what happens on any given day...

Reactivity sucks. People who say it doesn't exist are just getting into semantics, because they think it's hyperacusis (which it could very well be or a part/subset of) - in my experience there seems to be a close link. It's not because they think T does not react to sound.

Anyway, keeping anxiety under control is important. The aircon wouldn't be doing any damage unless you have your head next to the outside compressor.

A lot of people's reactivity goes away if they rest their ears from loud noise whilst still exposing to beneficial sound. I still get it on spike days depending on how badly I've slept which is typical. But other days not at all. It's an annoyance that's for sure.

If I look at a LCD TV larger than 30 inches with no sound at all, on mute, my tinnitus spikes. Dunno why. I tried 4 different brands. All the same thing. You just never know sometimes. I hope your spike goes down soon.

Sorry to hear about the reactive tinnitus. While it can be argued that it overlaps with hyperacusis, I think it does stand alone, and have experienced it as well, just this week. Kind of a lousy feeling as every beeper of this modern world, such as the microwave, causes instant annoyance, all day long. As soon as you mentioned reactive, I knew exactly how you felt.

Found in my case it got better after a good nights sleep. Try some melatonin if it is keeping you up at night.

I did think it could have been food. I had KFC and Powerade so i though that amount of salt could have annoyed it. I did that though because i had a feeling i was dehydrated and needed some electrolytes from being sick. I'm normally at work so never really notice the day to day grind of it. It is only recently i started to notice a trend to it. I think being away from work though has thrown me a bit.

No defiantly not next to the outside compressor lol. Its a 30 decible room without the air con on with it on it reaches mid 40's

I honestly thought being at home like this would rest them but for some reason they just seem more aggravated which is rather strange. My sleep hasnt been grate since ive been sick and its been extremely hot which is probably not helping.

@Digital Doc we dont have melatonin available for purchase hear unless you have a script. I only know this because my friend had to get herself some when she was in America in a chemist because we dont have it available.

My Tinnitus is the same. When I have spikes, it's always reactive, and gets louder in response to noise. And just as you described, it calms down after the noise stop, almost immediately, likes it's in rhythm with it or something. So, it definitely exists. Just today I had the worst instance of this in my life, and so far, it isn't calming down. :(

Sugar (and glucose in fruits and berries) might also be capable of having a negative impact on T.

I am trying to cut back on sugar which is hard when everyone decides to give you chocolate for christmas. -sigh- The sugar in the powerade could have also done it as well.

@kiel I just popped my earplugs in because it was reacting to the computer fan and annoying me and since its going to be 40 degree's today im going to need the aircon on all day. I'd rather deal with the sound with my earplugs in then the reactivity of it without them. Oh dear what happened?

No offense, but it is a relief to hear someone else is dealing with this too. Not that I wish this on anyone mind ypu, but Idk, it's comforting to know you aren't alone, y 'know? For me, I think this was all brought about by a combination of multiple infections back to back, exposure to some really loud noise, and some highly ototoxic ear drops, all within the span of this month. It's been rough, to say the least. I hope things will get better for both of us.

I get what your saying. I thought for the last 24 hours it was just me going crazy, but it seems its something that is rather common from what i am reading in this thread. Ive had reactivity before but never this bad, so im not sure the deal with what is going on there. I like you am hoping it does go down because it does really suck. I think the reactivity is worse then the tinnitus honestly.

Oh definitely. Tinnitus you can at least mask with other stuff (most of the time, anyway). Reactive tho, is just a whole other animal. Keeps you from enjoying anything. But, it seems like it is finally beginning to let up for me. I find that if I can keep things as quiet as possible, it helps calm it down. It also helps to relax as much as possible. At least, that's how I try to deal with it @Fally .

Glad that its letting up for you. I hope mine decides to at some point. One can only hope!

Too bad about the melatonin as it seems to help. Could try getting it via prescription or mail order perhaps.

I am normally really good at sleeping. I think cause ive been not doing anything and been at home not work im just not as tired. Magnisum always helps me sleep but ive not had it in a few days because of my upset stomach.

Lack of/ poor sleep definitely contributes to reactivity for me. Don't worry too much about it if you can.

You can get some diluted melatonin at pharmacies there with out a prescription. It might work ok because low melatonin doses work better than high.

I had a completely low stable day yesterday but for some reason woke up with a reactive spike, maybe my usual broken sleep. It makes me so annoyed.

Oh wow thank you I will have to look into that. Yeah sleeping been a bit off, I think its cause ive been sick or not expelling energy like normal. After a long day at work i will get into bed and fall straight to sleep normally.

Yikes I am sorry to hear that :( It really is very annoying!
