one of the questions in the tinnitus survey asks if tinnitus improves if you clench your teeth - which mine does, it becomes quieter, does anyone know what that means?

best bet is on TMJD, dont do anything drastic right way , get a good consult from one or two different doctors. And then decide what you want to do.

Refer to dr susan shores work with somatic t..which she believes is due to overcompensation of somatic nerves for loss of auditory input

@Mario martz , FYI.

And a question to @DebInAustralia - Does this mean that the "clenching" pressure (in the cases where it increases tinnitus volume) is compressing and stimulating the overcompensating somatic nerves, then, and it's not really a case of the clench compressing or affecting an inflamed auditory nerve? What are your thoughts? Thanks. :)

I have tmj. It sounds like when you clench your taking pressure off of whatever is possibly causing your T and when you open wide its adding pressure to what ever is causing your T.

I lean towards maladaptive plasticity involving somatic overcompensation rather than auditory nerve inflammation (in my case). Ive never understood the variation in the ways people can modulate somatic tinnitus volume though. Any thoughts ?

I wish I knew! Mine is increased by clenching my jaw but I would say that's not really what's doing it. Instead, I feel like it goes up in direct reaction to the contraction of the neck and platysmus muscles. It also goes up if I rotate my neck completely in either direction (stretch-pressure on nerves?). And it goes up if I simply sit and press down on the top of my head, without contracting any neck muscles at all (pressure through the spine?).

MYSTERY.

Honestly, I went to a doctor. My jaw is visibly crooked; the X Rays show that my jaw is misaligned and stuff; the doctor still said I don't have TMJ so who knows? Lol
