- Cause of Tinnitus
- Head or Neck Injury, Loud Noise and/or Ear Infections
I grew up with perfect hearing.. all through school and college. One day when I was about 22 years old I started hearing ringing in my head that wouldn't go away. I had been doing a lot of music recording is music studios and a brief case fell on my head on a train. I had also had terrible ear infection, all within about two years of the tinnitus onset, so I am not sure which of any or if all of them caused my tinnitus. It gave me acute anxiety and I was a mess. OK so I didn't want a low quality of life so I just had to accept the darn ringing and get one with it.. But my hearing went back either because of it or separately. So now I was not only hearing ringing but I couldn't comprehend normal conversation without the person repeating it.
Twenty five years later. I got through law school with an almost A average and worked my way up to being a Partner in law firm despite the darn ringing and the hearing loss. First, I learned to read lips and second I disciplined my brain to ignore the sounds as if were white noise like - traffic, humming from an AC, rain outside - you get the point. I wanted a high quality inner life and the only way to achieve that was to accept the darn noise and my disability (despite no one seeing it or caring about it and just generally annoyed by it.)
Fast forward, 2017. I am on a cruise (Veendam) and they had a lecture on Acupuncture. I had nothing better to do than to go because the children were in the teen Loft and my husband was in the Casino.. So I sat with mostly older people in some kind of pain.. and I raised my hand. "Can you help me with tinnitus and hearing loss?" The Acupuncturist was a Chinese national male doctor, tall and very educated. He looked at me and immediately said "Yes we treat tinnitus and hearing loss." The light bulb went off. OK, I thought, I am going to give it shot. It's what a hundred bucks? Insurance doesn't cover it but that would be almost a co-pay for Western medicine right?
Later that day, I went to his office. I was absolutely terrified of getting needles poked in me (for any reason whatsoever). He gave me topical anesthetics and away he poked.. To my surprise I hardly felt a thing and it didn't hurt.
So I laid there with twenty needles stuck in me and heat shining down at me and the wait began..
Half and hour later he returned, pulled the needles out and I got up and left.
Did anything change? No, I thought. But ... later that day my daughter with a faint high voice was speaking to me and I could actually understand what she said.... and this started happening over and over again. When I got home I ACTUALLY UNDERSTOOD THE CASHIER AT THE FAST FOOD WINDOW..
Was the ringing gone? No but IT WAS LESS. It wasn't like an instant gratification now you hear it now you don't.. but it was a slight but ever important improvement making me HEAR BETTER.
When I got back to Florida I found a local Acupuncturist. He too said he could help me and he's added a chinese herb. I'm telling you THAT ACUPUNCTURE IS HELPING ME.
I still have tinnitus but the sound it slowly getting quiet. It's not "shezam its gone" but IT IS WORKING. I am only writing on this blog because after 25 years of hearing aids and all kinds of pills and drops and other things.. this is something that is actually helping me.
I do still have tinnitus but it's getting quieter and my hearing is getting better.
For anyone struggling.. you might want to try acupuncture..
Despite the fact that I have been living happily WITH tinnitus, life would sure be better without it. For anyone depressed over it...choose not to allow it to mess with your inner serenity..
Thanks and God Speed!
