Cause of Tinnitus
After Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Hi, I just wanted to share my story and see if anyone else can relate. When I got pregnant, at 4th month my nose was stuffed for over a month. Then I started hearing a crackling in my ears when I swallowed like they had fluid in them. I went to the ENT and he looked my eardrums and he confirmed that I had fluid and he prescribed some drops. I gave birth and the crackling was still there.

Then I started breastfeeding my baby. When I was 3 months postpartum I started having a weird buzzing in my right ear and I felt like it was vibrating. I went to a different ENT and he tested me. He also told me that I had fluid in both my ears and he suggested surgery to put ear tubes. He did the surgery first in my right ear and when he opened the eardrum he told me that I had no fluid. He prescribed me a CT scan because he suspected otosclerosis. I went and got it but it wasn't otosclerosis.

I don't know what to do. It's been almost a year with the vibration and now a high pitched noise is added to the menu.

Is it related to the pregnancy, the breastfeeding (I am still doing it), something else?? Am I dying?

I am scared. I don't know what to do. And I have my one-year-old daughter to take care of all alone.

Anyone can relate??

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear your struggle with tinnitus while you have to care for a young child. I think having a vibrating sensation may be similar to pulsating type of tinnitus which is due to blood pressure and circulation issue. Perhaps get a doctor to check out. But vibration to someone can mean just low hum ringing. Here is a search on the forum with 'vibrating tinnitus' and there are quite a few prior discussions. One of those threads is actually from a mom with 2 kids too and she felt her tinnitus like vibrating too. Lastly, even if you have a low and now a high pitch tinnitus, that is called a 2-tone tinnitus. It is quite common for people to have multi-toned tinnitus. No you are not dying because of different tones of tinnitus ringing. One famous comedian David Letterman once had a night show talking about his 2-toned tinnitus with William Shatner of Star Trek fame (Captain Kirk) who also has a high pitched tinnitus. See, many people are doing fine with tinnitus. It was a struggle mentally for some especially when tinnitus is new. But life goes on for many folks. You will too. Try to relax and get things checked out by the doctors/ENTs to ease your fear of hidden health challenge. If they can't find anything wrong, then just try to remain positive and calm about the tinnitus. It is quite a common problem but many people do get better with it over time, as shown by so many success stories. Please read those stories to help you remain hopeful and positive. I list below the links to the video clip of David Letterman and my own success story. Hopefully they will help and calm you. Take good care. Enjoy your child. God bless.

Omg!!! Thank you very much... I laughed at the video, it made my day... It's the same thing with me.

The thing is that I've been to several doctors. My heart checked, my blood pressure checked, blood work checked, even a head CT scan. I've seen two different ENT doctors three or four times each. They say that I have mild hearing loss but my auditory nerves are OK. It's coming from the outer ear. They both thought I had fluid but I didn't. It's very complicated I can't understand it and it's driving me crazy... But thank you so much for the answer and the help!!

Did your tinnitus resolve or did you habituate to it? I am six months postpartum (and also breastfeeding) and developed tinnitus two weeks ago. Any coping skills/tips to share? Do you think hormones are to blame?
