This question goes out especially to all the females with tinnitus :)

I noticed that the days before I get my menstruation my tinnitus is way WORSE, and also I have the feeling that generally my Hearing gets worse, too. And since a couple of months, my tinnitus becomes pulsatile the days before / first days of my menstruation. I can hear my pulse very loudly in my left Ear: schhhh/sh... schhh/sh... schhh/sh (something like that). Oh, and it is generally loudest in the morning :) And normally my Tinnitus is NOT pulsatile!

Do you have an explanation for this? Did any one of you experience something similar?

Thanks for reading!! :) :)

For sure. My tinnitus usually starts inclining slowly in the two weeks leading up to my period or it will suddenly get louder a few days before it or on the day I get it. But it's almost always guaranteed to get louder around that time of the month. I have pulsatile tinnitus as well as my normal tinnitus, but the pulsatile also gets a lot more prominent as well.

I think it has something to do with your hormones and the stress that menstruation can cause. There's a lot of threads on Tinnitus Talk made by other women wondering the same thing. It's common.

Definitely! It seems to peak every time there is a fluctuation in hormones. When hormones are at a steady high or steady lows (rather than climbing or dropping) then it's quieter. It seems to be really bad right around the middle of the cycle (ovulation) and then the day right before the period starts.

Hormones and water retention play a big part in tinnitus spikes.
If you do get heavy flows you might find iron tablets and water tablets helpful.

glynis

Thanks for all your replies! :) I think it may be quite possible that I have a slight iron deficiency because whenever I did not feel so well (tired, often sick with a cold and so on) in the past and my doctor took blood I was always lacking iron so I started taking tablets again today :) But I am already Feeling better knowing this is normal! :) Somehow I never came across over other Posts where this was discussed and so I thought I just ask here :) I am not Feeling very good at the Moment because I have cramps and back pain and a headache and a nasty cold, so I hope my Menstruation starts soon, usually it gets a Little better then! :)

I am so glad other people experience the same thing! I thought I've been crazy these past few months of noticing a huge spike in the middle of the month. I started paying attention to it a little better and noticed it's always around the time I'm ovulating.

Yes, mine definitely gets worse before my periods. It can start as long as about a week before, and continues during the period as well. It doesn't necessarily happen before each period, but it happens for the majority of times. If I am especially stressed, it adds on and becomes even worse. Just try to keep calm --- and NEVER be lazy to protect your ears!

What kind of medication do you take for menstrual cramps? I used to take Ibuprofen and No-Spa (Drotaverine), but since the tinnitus onset I haven't used any of them. I know that Ibuprofen can be ototoxic. Do you have any experience? I feel awful right now, but still not as awful to be willing to exacerbate the tinnitus. Thank you.
