Cause of Tinnitus
Unknown
I was just on YouTube and a post from Julian Cowan Hill popped up on my feed and brought back the memories of when I was suffering badly and searching for a cure online. I remember finding great comfort reading success stories so i thought I'd post an update.

When my tinnitus first started there were a few things I attributed it to but I understand now it was a physical manifestation of stress. I didn't particularly feel stressed but I realize now I really didn't feel anything. I spent 15 years drunk and high on coke, hardly sleeping and becoming a numb and reclusive prick.

I ended up finding Julian's videos on YouTube and he gave me hope. I began to turn things around and it has been a very long meandering process with lots of setbacks and lots of victories.

I managed to quit the coke (and alcohol for a while) and started getting about 4 hours sleep a night, working out and getting in shape and the tinnitus got quieter and quieter, however, at some point I started drinking again and it came back. Not loud but in both ears this time (lol)... It didn't bother me though. It stopped bothering me before it went the first time and i understood there was a connection between tinnitus and fear/ anxiety.

This time, however, it bought its friends along... aching legs, electric shocks, internal tremors and feeling like parts of me were on fire or seriously sunburnt. This went on for months! 3 Doctors and a neurologist all said it was anxiety.

I had a good job but other than that I was complete disgrace.

This was rock bottom now so I decided I needed to do some serious work on myself. I quit drinking, went on the carnivore diet, started lifting weights, running and tracking my sleep. The weight dropped off and I started to gain some self esteem back.

Eventually all my symptoms went... the tinnitus... everything. Like I said the tinnitus was the least of my worries at this point. I didn't even realise it had gone but the constant tremors and anxiety started to get less and less until it was all gone.

As crazy as it sounds I can honestly say that I'm extremely grateful for the whole experience. It was like I was asleep at the wheel, driving towards a cliff and my body woke me up.

Oh wow. So I have hope!! I'm at 1 year. Was yours somatic meaning could you change the sound by moving your neck or jaw? So you really feel the getting healthy helped it go away. That's my last step.

Of course you have. There's no time limit. Check out Julian's videos on YouTube. Another thing is you should stop hanging around this place. The sort of person who hangs around this sort of place for years is someone who is suffering and you need to get out of that headspace even with the tinnitus. The tinnitus will go once you stop sufferring its not the other way around. It was only after i did that did it start to back off. Ignore anyone who says it can't be cured. Mine was brutal. High pitch low pitch crickets, pulsing in time with my heartbeat, higher pitch if I squeezed my teeth together.

I had a friend who had T from a concert years ago and his went when he moved to Australia and had a baby and he said he didn't even realise it had gone. I went out there recently and saw him and he told me.

This morning, If I plug my ears as tight as possible, I can here the faintest sound but it's usually total silence. The only time I can ever hear anything without looking for it is at night when I try to sleep.

Ignore anyone who says it can't be cured.
There isn't a universally effective cure but that doesn't mean it can't get better or go away for many people. But saying any case of tinnitus can currently be cured would be wrong.

Also even if it is gone it can always come back again. I never got the chance to even experience temporary tinnitus. If I did I would have protected my ears more often.

@DNA82

I am pleased that you have made a recovery from tinnitus along with the other problems that you endured over many years and your life is now back on track. There are a few things that you have mentioned in your posts, which makes me believe you are not so well informed about tinnitus as you might believe. Therefore, I respectfully ask that you continue reading as you may change your opinion about tinnitus and those that have difficulty living and coping with it long term.

Although tinnitus can be caused by many things they usually fit into three possibly 4 four main categories: Noise induced. Underlying medical problem within the auditory system. Stress. Medication All of them can be debilitating when severe. From what you have written, my understanding is that your tinnitus was caused by "stress" resulting from environmental problems spanning your life over many years and included substance dependency. Therefore, once you changed your lifestyle things started to turn around for you and eventually after a lot of hard work your tinnitus began to subside and eventually went away. Stress can be difficult to manage and if it's not controlled can take its toll on the body as in your case causing the onset of tinnitus. When you changed your lifestyle things began to improve for you. You have said and I quote: Ignore anyone that says it can't be cured. This is where you have made an error.

Tinnitus caused by stress often goes completely away once the stress is brought under control and you are proof of this. Tinnitus caused by an underlying medical problem within the auditory system and there are many, in most cases are not able to be cured. The same applies to tinnitus that is noise induced. Both these types of tinnitus come in many forms and intensities: mild, moderate, severe or very severe. A lot of people do habituate to tinnitus and carry on to lead fullilling lives. However, be under no illusion tinnitus can be a very debilitating condtion when it is severe and the level of intensity is sustained. Some people are unable to work because of it and find doing normal everday tasks difficult because they have to live on medication.

If you read some of my posts in this forum I believe you'll see that I am quite a positive thinking person because one has to be, in order to cope with tinnitus especially when it is severe. I am also a realist and know the depths tinnitus can take a person to and the way it can affect their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Julian Cowan Hill, who you look up to in awe, maybe able to help some people that have tinnitus caused by stress with the laying on of his hands. However, tinnitus caused by an underlying medical condition within the auditory system or is noise induced, are entirely different kettles of fish and something JCH knows nothing about.

Hi Michael,

You make some valid points. After I tried every vitamin, exercise, chinese herb and medical test I had pretty much given up hope. Once I went down the path of working on my general physical and (more importantly) mental health things improved. So perhaps i saw that as the silver bullet and maybe, as you said, that doesn't apply to all forms of tinnitus. In which case, in reflection, I stand corrected.

@Mymlan JCH is not a snake oilist. He puts out loads of information for free and even if you believe he is misguided, it's not fair to essentially label him as a conman. He charges for counseling as, like all of us, he needs to make a living. I find him to be extremely genuine . If you disagree then fair enough.

On a different note I would just like to make clear, for people who are suffering, that before my tinnitus started to decrease it lost its ability to trigger fear in me. I was still aware of it pretty much all the time but it was just a pain in the ass and not a monster trying to kill me. A (poor) analogy would be like to imagine a stone in your shoe that fills you with dread (i said it was a poor analogy) but then slowly the dread drops off and it becomes just a stone in your shoe.

One of the hardest things for me at the beginning was imagining how i would function in the world with such extreme negative thoughts being generated by the noise. Then after a while I remember sometimes being shocked that i was out and about enjoying life with this madness going on in my head. In fact i got a bit carried away with it to the point I started drinking and parting heavily again which is when it came back/ got worse, however, like I said in my original post, that isn't what got me back in-line, it was actually the myriad of other bizarre symptoms that sprung up - all of which DID scare the hell out of me. If anyone is going through a similar thing i suggest checking out the anxietycentre forum which helped me a lot.

HI @DNA82

Thank you for your comments. I am pleased that you've taken my thoughts onboard and been objective about them. I commend you for your achievements in the face of much adversity. You kept on pushing where many might have given up. I hope whoever hears about your story they are inspired by it. Throughout your posts the main theme is your positivity, drive and determination. Without that negativity has a chance of taking hold and that's something none of us need.

Take care and I wish you all the best
Michael

I really think it is your bodies way of telling you that you're on a dangerous path. I had anxiety, a stressful job in sales, although I don't look it I was unhealthy. I said enough is enough and changed. Went to the gym, done cardio, lifted weights. This has helped my anxiety and I also believe was the cure of my PT.

Similar to my current path. A few months in, I started taking better care of my body: physiotherapy and stretching first, sports and improved food quality a bit later. Tinnitus went down massively at first and is still improving over the months. I'm convinced that there are plenty of cases with tinnitus where generic training of the body reduces these symptoms.

That said, I don't believe it will help when hearing loss is the cause, which is usually the case.

Wow. This gives me hope. I've had it for four months and I'm totally losing it.

Hi!

I am actually crying reading this!! I am new to tinnitus and I am really trying to stay positive and this story really helps me to be positive!

I have been learning a lot about mind over matter. You may want to look into it. lookup dr joe dispenza on youtube
Thank you for the suggestion but I've already tried these approaches. I'd encourage anyone to try out CBT, mindfulness or other strategies as they might help someone (as long as "mind over matter" isn't being used to downplay how debilitating this condition can be).

(as long as "mind over matter" isn't being used to downplay how debilitating this condition can be).

Who would do that? It is obviously debilitating. Mind over matter is not an easy thing at all. Most give up on it too quickly because it is hard and they don't have the right teacher or don't think it is possible. It is literally something you have to practice over and over until you get each part right. It also involves the use of the pineal gland in your brain. Some people can't do it because their pineal gland is too calcified from a lifetime of fluoride intake from water or toothpaste. You just have to go through a decalcification process first. You also have to believe that it will work or it will not work. I would try it again. The body and mind are smart. They can heal themselves if you direct them correctly.

HI @Wakingknowledge

Tinnitus comes in many forms and intensities and no two people will experience it the same. I see that you are new to tinnitus and hope you don't mind me saying: You have the right attitude and insight into coming to terms with tinnitus and moving on with one's life. This condition isn't easy and can be very debilitating for some people. However, a defeatest and negative attitude towards tinnitus and life, is an asurity that a person will make it harder forthemselves to habituate and have some normality in their life. There is help out there and if one is able to, seek the help of an Audiologist that specialises in tinnitus and hyperacusis treatment.

Well done I like the way you think.
Take care

Michael

Are you saying everyone can cure their tinnitus if they just have the right mindset? That's usually one of the aspects of "mind over matter" that people criticise, so while a certain attitude might help to cope a bit better, tinnitus can nonetheless be severely debilitating. I appreciate the support, we just shouldn't overstate the benefits of CBT, mindfulness and similar approaches.
