Hi,

I am male 31, have had anxiety bout last year in April - fixed it. I work a lot but not in a stressful environment.

I have had neck pain in one side due to working a lot I guess.

And then all of a sudden I started hearing some sound in left ear in the night, I googled for it and I think I caught this tinnitus.

It is the 3rd day today and it's bothering me, I am planning to visit an ENT today to rule out any issues.

It doesn't bother me when I am around people whole day, but when I go to bed the sound is there and in the morning too when I wake up, and usually it's like when I know it's there, then the mind takes me there. I do not go to concerts and have not been exposed to loud sounds etc.

Any help on how do I move to kill this tinnitus before it becomes chronic? Or do I have to suffer with this life long? Do I have to love it?

If your neck was hurting then there could be some kind of inflammation or a muscle problem aggravating your auditory nerve. question: are you, were you taking any medications?

The neck pain/strain can possibly be an issue for the tinnitus. See your ENT and see what he/she says. Majority of the tinnitus cases arise from sound-induced damages, illnesses, meds, stress. Hopefully if your neck feels better, the ringing can get better or even fade.

I think your approach is reasonable. Go down the diagnosis path and try to figure out the root cause. Tinnitus is a symptom that can be due to many many different causes. Some are fixable, others, not so much, so it's important to narrow it down to what causes your T.

In a very large majority of cases, T is due to a problem in the hearing apparatus, so it may be useful to suggest to your ENT doc, if s/he doesn't do it on his/her own, to have a hearing test done with an audiologist.

This can help you (and your doc) navigate the diagnosis path: https://www.tinnitusresearch.net/index.php/for-clinicians/diagnostic-flowchart

In the meantime, protect your ears from loud noises.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, I had a session with ENT, he saw some earwax and removed it but I can still hear that sound, he found inflammation in my ear so I am on a week of antibiotics and next week he wants to have me for a hearing test.

Reading about tinnitus has scared me a lot, I am feeling fragile - is it something that will never go? Or is it for most people recurring episodes? I do not work in an environment, not listen to songs with headphones etc, i dunno, when I am alone or in silence this noise and tendency to focus on it becomes so unbearable - lol I am sooo tensed

If you can only hear your tinnitus when in quiet rooms / going to sleep, you are very lucky. Many people have it a lot worse than that and can still live a relatively normal life. You will most likely habituate it to where your brain will put it in the background and you won't notice it unless you think about it. I suggest getting a white noise machine to play when you sleep to help you not hear it.

Tinnitus is scary to get at first but once you take any emotional response out of it, it gets better.

Also this is the prescription from my ENT Specialist today, any pointers?

Thanks a lot! You guys are so helpful.

This is the one I have.

Tinnitus is still very much a mystery and I can't give you a definitive answer. Most cases it will fade over time and potentially go away completely. Sometimes people go through episodes with it, but it untimely fades again.

What you do need to do now is take your hearing protection VERY seriously because tinnitus can get a lot worse if you don't. Please remember to protect your ears going forward with ear plugs and whatnot.

Thank you! For this :) i hope i get better and all of on here too! :)

That's a good sign. It would appear that you haven't hurt your ears as much as many of us on this forum. There is a good chance that eventually it will go away. Check out

Thank u for your words, if i am alone or I concentrate to hear it - i hear it, in the night i hear it but may be due to a pattern and anxiety in me . I hope this fades away- i am just worried it doesn't get worse - does it? i have never been to loud music or headphones. Now i have fever and slight throat pain - do you think it can go away on its own?

Also i will use apps/devices in the night to soothe myself and stay away from loud sounds.... also my ent gave me these medications- any experience with this?

If you are able to avoid being getting new acoustic traumas, taking ototoxic medications, major dental surgery, microsuction, and ultrasonic dental cleaning, it shouldn't get worse. For many people, T tends to fade.

I couldn't find the names of the drugs on your list on the list of ototoxic medications, and that is a good sign. You might want to see whether those drugs are sold under other brand names, and try searching for those names on

and on

Today I consulted another ENT back in my home country. He says it can be due to the cold and flu as i had cold/flu immediately next day after the tinnitus. He has prescribed me the following, i find one in the list of oxotoxic medicines, any suggestions?

Hello Again,

I am almost 3 weeks 2 days into this Phase of Tinnitus, it started with a soft noise on my right ear and I thought something happened and I tried to ignore for a minute or so, but I did one bug mistake of googling :) and then reading over and over and over.

I have spoken to a lot of you here - many thanks for that, for telling me how your journey has been so far and how am I going to be hopefully:)

My Tinnitus has been so far mild, I hear it in silence mostly or for a while after I wake up or randomly when I focus on it. Even if I am in silence and busy I won't hear the tinnitus. I have had days where my focus on tinnitus has been less and I do not hear it except going to bed.

I have been to ENT, was initially told I have a bit of ear wax and some minor ear inflammation and was given antibiotics for that, week after I visited the ENT again and he told me inflammation is gone and he did a hearing test which was all good - no hearing loss.

I am going through a tough time of anxiety that has got arisen due to tinnitus, tough at time due to my anxiety issues to deal with work and family. Anxiety on one hand and the thoughts/ some times sounds of tinnitus are both making me very scared and even more anxious like a Vicious Cycle.

I am 3+ weeks in, not sure if my tinnitus will go away or my brain and anxiety will start feeling relieved. What scares most is stories here that people have daily tormenting tinnitus for years without a light. Is it really the case or for most the tinnitus in 2-3 months goes lower and they start noticing it lesser and lesser especially in cases like mine where I feel it's mild and less noticeable to me, only if I focus on it (which is not always in my control) it gets louder to me. Also, I have felt I have heard this sound many many times in my life. Is it that I have gotten into this cycle of noticing and worrying?

Please I need your support and experience here how things usually are with Tinnitus.

Also please if you can suggest me what all should I try to help me lower the volume or perception of this sound.

Thanks for reading!
