Hi everyone,

I'm Sarah, I'm 31 and I have had noise-induced tinnitus since mid July this year.

I live in Queensland, Australia and we are currently experiencing 70 km/hr wind! It's crazy wild! Anyway I've had to go out of the house a few times to get in the the car/hang out washing etc. I've now sat down to watch some TV tonight and noticed that my tinnitus is louder and more static sounding. We had a really windy day about a month ago and noticed the same thing but thought it might have been coincidental.

Does this happen to anyone else?

P.S. My tinnitus has become a lot more manageable this past month. I forget about it frequently and it doesn't seem to bother me so much at night anymore (I hear it but it doesn't make me anxious as hell like it used to in the first 6 weeks), yay! Tonight might be a different story as it's pretty fuzzy :-( but we'll see how we go!

Hello Sarah :)

Yes many people have some sort of reactive tinnitus including myself.

I even react to my footsteps... :/

I don't think wind can hurt you unless it's over long periods of time (hours).

So just relax and it will calm down :)

Best regards.

Hello Sarah,

This post is rather old, but I will share my opinion, just in case. I do notice that I get a spike whenever the weather changes, and that includes a windy weather. I've definitely experienced many spikes when the weather is windy, cloudy or rainy.

The best days for me tend to be when the weather remains somewhat stable, calm, relatively dry, and not too cloudy. Of course, the weather is not always like that, so you can imagine.

Not sure if this is just a coincidence or really a thing: can weather produce a tinnitus spike?

Whenever I have these severe spikes, my tinnitus seems to come from my head (not my ears) and it tends to be an electric buzz, rather than an "eeeee", so that's why I can't establish a relationship between the weather and my tinnitus. Especially since my tinnitus seems to be med & stress induced. However, so many times experiencing spikes during windy/cloudy (unstable weather) that it's definitely something to look at.

Hello Sarah,

I recognize my response to your post is very late, but I came across it when I started to look on Tinnitus Talk to see if there were others whose tinnitus increased or spiked due to wind.

I live on Long Island (New York) and with the winter, comes windy weather. I have recently started to notice a direct correlation between high wind speed (> 15 mph) and the annoyance of my tinnitus. Unfortunately, the wind during the winter here, particularly during storms is 30 mph and greater, so as it cuts through the trees surrounding my home, the sound/frequency from this increases my tinnitus even when I remain indoors. I was starting to habituate prior to the start of winter here (December), but now I am finding the tinnitus very distracting again.

If I learn of any ways to better manage my tinnitus during windy days, I will be sure to pass these along.

Best of luck.
