Cause of Tinnitus
Airplane pressure with a severe cold
First, I want to thank all of you for your postings. Over the past 2 1/2 years I have read your stories and have not felt alone in my struggle with tinnitus. Thank you.

My tinnitus started in Nov of 2015 when I flew for a business trip. I had a severe cold and remember that I couldn't "pop" my left ear. After that, I had all the symptoms of tinnitus. If I bent over, the pressure in my head was intense. I tried several different remedies; but, to no avail. The doctors checked my hearing and the fluid levels in my ear. I even underwent an MRI. These were of no help. I thought it would go away with subsequent flights on airplanes; but, it did not. Sometimes, the ringing in my ear was so loud, I could hear nothing else.

I was traveling last week across the country on an airplane and our flight was delayed due to complications with the aircraft. In order to transport the passengers, the airline used an older airplane. Right away the increased pressure in the cabin was noticed. The flight was about 4 hours long and about 2 hours into it, I put ear plugs in my ears and attempted to sleep. My left ear "popped" several times. It was quite a relief to the pressure I had felt in my head. My tinnitus has been gone ever since.

JockeP:
I do believe my tinnitus was somatic and not in my mind. I felt constant pressure in my head and the tinnitus was of a pulsative nature (in time with my heart beat). Because it felt like I just needed to "pop" my ears, I tried in vain to do so.

Bill Bauer:

The volume of the tinnitus varied. If I was stressed or had just exerted myself physically, my tinnitus was the loudest. In the morning after a good rest, my tinnitus was more quiet. At times, the tinnitus would keep me up at night due to how loud it could be. As I stated before, sometimes ir was so loud that I couldn't hear anything else.

This is an amazing success story. You hit the lottery. I hope it stays the same and enjoy the silence :)
Every flight trip I take my ears pop in flight and was hoping after I got home I won't hear T but I do :p Your story inspires me to travel more and hope for the best haha :)

Thanks! I'm enjoying every minute of the silence. It makes me that much more appreciative.

As for the flight, I think it made a difference that the airplane was older and had more pressure. I've traveled a lot in the last 2 1/2 years and the newer planes just didn't do it for me.

I'm glad that you're T free now. It must feel amazing. I'm hoping it never comes back.

Did you ever take a pressure test of your ears?

Was actually talking to a friend of mine who had tinnitus as a result of concussion. Suffered with it for 5 years and then it gradually faded away for him until he was back to silence.

Good to hear that it can go away for some people, even after extender periods of time!

interesting, so it's confirmed that tinnitus caused by TBI can fade.

Thanks! It is pretty amazing.

Hex: My ENT doctor checked the pressure in my ears and said it was normal. It seemed odd to me since it felt like I had a lot of pressure in my head.

Yonkapin: That is an awesome story about your friend with a concussion.

I thought it might be sinuitus and followed the instructions to unblock my sinuses. It didn't work.

It did feel blocked; so, I think you are right in that assumption.

Thanks!

so it was pusatile tinnitus, did an ENT confirm that?

pusatile and non pusatile are completely seperate conditions.
