Tinnitus Is Unfair, Period

Maybe it's just two different kinds of bad.

Yep! True Lex. Consequences are the same, origins are different. This may infuriate you, but I have to say, I miss my old noise induced tinnitus. I got used to it and I could get stuff done. Not now. It's too ridiculous! I'm still reeling from the shock that it can get worse. It really can! Perhaps there's some consolation to be found in being grateful that it's not worse. I know....lame!

so the problem of this kind of tinnitus onset probably lies with the immune system's reaction to whatever antigen it finds, be it virus, bacteria or one's own tissue.

I know nothing about Lupus, but I can see how illnesses such as MS could create tinnitus, considering it damages the myelin sheath surrounding nerves by a process of inflammation, causing lesions. To an extent, viruses also inflame and leave behind lesions. On the eighth nerve, that may result in tinnitus. If my body has fought and lost against such a virus and what you suggest is true, I can only hope that my immune system doesn't deliver any new surprises.

There is a balance that needs to be struck here: on the one hand it's healthy to acknowledge that life is unfair and that it will throw challenges at us that need to be overcome or accepted. However, on the other hand, I fear that simply saying "life is unfair.... deal with it... learn to accept, etc." will be used as an excuse to not actually find a cure for these things that afflict us. The "acceptance" thing may have worked in the past before we had the scientific method. However, the way I see it now is that "acceptance" is only a placeholder until real therapies/cures arrive.

@The Red Viper, like you, I think tinnitus and all other ear problems should have a cure or at least, an effective treatment. It's one of our five senses, for crying out loud.

However, to me, saying life is unfair is not an excuse to stop looking for answers. It's just an observation of what life is. Kids who get cancer, women who are beaten and assaulted, men who are convicted for crimes they didn't commit, elders who die a slow painful death without dignity -- these are just some of the things that make me think life is unfair. But it doesn't mean I think it's okay that they're happening.

Yeah I agree with you. I just felt compelled to say something because nowadays I'm seeing a rise in the "life is unfair deal with it" quote being thrown around by people who don't have serious issues (or if they do have issues, it's relatively minor, e.g. acne, and they think because it's not bad for them no issue is bad for others). It's mostly coming from the right-wing elements in our society, i.e. "if you're not healthy it's completely your fault, learn some personal responsibility!" I acknowledge that acceptance and equanimity are good things in life, but let's not get it twisted: sometimes things just get thrown on people, whether its their own fault or not, and no one should needlessly suffer for the rest of their lives because of it.

This is certainly becoming a common theme nowadays. I hear it more than ever now among overstretched Health workers. Life is full of unknown futures and assorted misadventures, some of which lead us toward ever greater discovery....and sometimes a little (or a lot of) medical or other help is needed along the way. If everyone was painfully responsible all the time, then nothing would ever be achieved or learned.

Its also a Darwinist kind of statement that conceals a deeper resentment about sharing in a world that appears to be running out of money and resources. Its also a bit of a "first-stone" attitude.

@PaulBe, yeah it's almost a way to dismiss why some people aren't doing as well as yourself. Instead of finding out why and trying to improve the situation for everyone, just blame it one the person suffering. It's basically a political version of blaming the patient.

I'm not sure what political ideology has to do with it. In my own circle, it was pretty much the opposite in terms of who was sympathetic and who was not.

If I was 70 years of age, and then got tinnitus, I wouldn't give a crap.

I assure you young man ---- if you were 70 years of age, you most certainly WOULD give a c _ _ p !!
I'm 72 and oh ---- yessssssssss...... I do !
