Tinnitus Since
02/01/2014
Well after 4 months of been almost tinnitus free, it's back, with a vengeance. I really had forgot how wholly consuming it is & how unless you've suffered it, no one truly understands. I'm reluctant to socialise, and I am withdrawing, and I'm doing all of this knowing it's not what to do!
My husband says I'm paying to much attention to it, feeding it as such. He's right but until you experience what I can only describe as a rumbling noise with an intermittent squealing I'm not sure he's qualified to give advice!
I can only be grateful for the knowledge that it does fade & hopefully I will have another time, soon please, where I'm tinnitus free.

That totally sucks! Feel for you! Finally getting rid of it, to it coming back. Talk about emotionally draining. Anyway, hope you get better soon and fingers crossed for it going away again!

Is it has settled before, it will settle again. Try to get good sleep at night meanwhile and maybe you wake up with low T. You can talk to your doc and see if he helps with the anxiety somehow

Thank you for your replies. I have an excellent app called 'white noise free' I can get some sleep most nights by listening to that. I don't know about you all, but I find it so draining! No wonder Van Gough cut his ear off!

I know it's horrible. I keep thinking my life is over half the time. But I know that within a few years a treatment will come out, so I'll await for that day to come.

that's cruel to have it disappear only to come back again. i noticed this thread has been inactive for awhile now - just wondering how you have been since then @Kittyl ?

do you know the reason for your T the first and second time?

Hi @Jbeans Im sure the first time it was due to a bad cold, or that's the conclusion the consultant came to when my MRI scan was clear. This time I'm sure it's been stress, although that's just a guess I really don't know why. It's funny how quickly you get used to the silence, what I would give for that again! Some days are worse than others. Have you had t for long?

Thanks for your reply @Kittyl ..
I haven't had T for long but it feels like an eternity ! I'm only two months in now . Mine appeared with no warning / reason too. Although I do have my theories - which were all dismissed by doctors I've seen

@Jbeans I feel for you, I found the first few months the worst. Are you able to sleep? The hospital I attended had a tinnitus clinic it took 7months for me to get a place but it was very helpful. This site saved me, it is such a wonderful support.

@Kittyl my T fluctuates a lot ! At one point I had 6-7 different T sounds going and some sounds are easier to mask than others. Thankfully at present time my T is quite low so I'm getting some decent sleep but otherwise I've gone 6 days without sleep before .

Wow, 4 full months being tinnitus free. I envy you as I consider myself lucky if I can have a day where I barely hear it.

Here is to hoping for a quick recovery.

Rumbling noise with intermittent squealing? Long periods of time where you don't have it? Let me guess, is one ear much worse than the other? No hearing loss alongside it?

I know this is a long shot, but try getting rid of ANY noise at night, ESPECIALLY the white noise that helps you sleep. No fans, nothing, not even a ceiling fan. Sleep in still air and silence. That's what cured (for 8 months and counting) the tinnitus I struggled with for 4 years. My apologies if this advice doesn't help your situation.

Also if you have glasses, switch to contacts. I did this around the same time as my T started fading out so it may be relevant.

Hi @Tamalak thank you for your advice. My tinnitus is in one ear only and I sadly do have hearing loss. I do use a white noise app, not every night, I do find it helps. I'm so pleased you are t free, long may it continue.
@Richard Wallace thank you for your reply, I live in hope!

do you use a headphone when listening to the white noise during sleep?

When you say rumbling noise what exactly did it sound like?
Drone???
Also why do you think sleeping in silence cured it?
I'm getting to a 4 year mark with this horrible drone noise and it's driving me up the wall:(
Thanks!

Hi valeri,
No it doesn't really sound like the drone of a plane I'm afraid. The nasty part of it is the high pitched tone which intermittently gets disrupted by "flickering", like whatever's making the tone is being squished.
The best description of the tone can be found here: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/is-my-tinnitus-unusual-please-help-identify-it.1604/
Details about defeating it is here https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/my-tinnitus-98-cured.10020/

I don't know why "noise at night" causes it. Wild ass guess? I have a streak of aspergers, and a symptom of the spectrum is a sensitivity to sensory input especially noise. I don't normally have a psychological reaction to noise but it may be my brain is overloaded in some way if it happens constantly at night. Also, my family has a history of migranes, and again while I never got them, this may be what I get instead.

@Tamalak, sleeping without any sound/noise at night that may cover your T is a peculiar approach; if your T is maskable. But who knows, maybe your treatment is the way to go.
So you are entirely T free?
And you had no perceivable HL?

Not entirely but 99%. I haven't heard it for months. I've felt the pre-murmurings of it a few times and I know the potential is still there. I had my hearing measured, there was no hearing loss.

@Tamalka, so no perceptible hearing loss.. and after time your T is as good as gone. Interesting, though I wonder if T with **exteme hearing loss** could resolve/get quieter over time?
Are there any people with **exteme hearing loss** and without T ?
