Cause of Tinnitus
noise + 3 major increases via (shouting / MRI/ flu+Tylenol)
Last week I decided to to do some home renovations. When I used the silicon caulking gun, it was a bit rusty I guess, I pulled on the handle to remove the tube and it made a really loud metal high pitched screeching squealing sound and I was in bathroom so it was in an enclosed space.

Now I have a really bad tinnitus spike ever since on top of another spike in another tone so I am really having a hard time.

Is it possible this could cause damage given the proximity to my ears?! I guess anything is possible with this horrible condition!

Hey Bud.

Hope your feeling a bit better.

Highly unlikely that the spike is permanent.

Noise trauma is more about duration when it comes to everyday sounds-
even with tinnitus.

If you have only had tinnitus for a year or so-
It is common for your ears to seem very sensitive to harsh sounds and to get temporary spikes.

Hang in there Bud.

I would agree with Bill that it's probably temporary. Having a loud spike myself, so can relate, though I don't know what mine could be related to. Hope you feel better soon!

Hey buddy. Did you not use your Peltors??? I hope the spike was temporary.

Doing really bad sadly :(
Me too, very very badly, worse I've ever been.

Sorry you're doing bad too bro, seems a couple of us vets are worsening. It's like I get a couple okayish days where I think ok I can do this, only to get even worse soon after - it's real torture. I've really screwed up, haven't I... Tinnitus has beaten me. That's what you get when you try to live normally with severe tinnitus, ya get even more severe tinnitus...

I'm sorry to hear, shrieking and shearing metal can indeed be really loud and uncomfortable.

I'm still on the side of @Bill Arsenault 's optimism, though -- it's not like you were pounding on a metal pole with a sledgehammer. Impossible to know noise level but I can't believe it was shocking.

Try to just keep resting your ears and trying to relax, I know it sucks but there's not much else to do.

Damn.

This shit can be brutal.

My tinnitus is also the worst it's ever been-
Oddly enough I'm coping pretty well for now.

You gotta hang in there.

I can't help but think I'll be the one begging for mercy on this forum one day-

But habituation can happen eventually to some extent-
Atleast for a while-
And I'm hoping forever-
Or until a cure for some relief.

You gotta fight on.

I'm with you on the begging. Habituation is great compared to the spikes. Unfortunately the spikes come out of nowhere for no reason that I can tell. Begging right now for better treatment or cure.

That sound was short and not amplified (as in; not a speaker, not an explosion), so 99,99% chance spike is caused by the stress/worry, and your brain therefor focusing on your T as if it was a threat. The experienced loudness will subside.

I feel for you man. My low frequency tinnitus went away in September and my hearing fully recovered for a whole week. Then my sleepband decided to be stupid and blast my right ear with full volume mix of brown, white, and pink noise. 100 to 110 decibels for roughly four or five seconds before I got the band off my head. Ear started hurting mildly and three days later the roaring tinnitus returned and my hearing dropped back to a 60 dB loss in all low frequencies. Been bad now for over two months. Hope to God it goes away again.

The spike from this particular accident has gotten better. Unfortunately I've had other accidents, so I'm going through some new spikes, living with 10+ tone tinnitus is no easy task.
