Hi,

I had grommets (ventilation tubes) put in my eardrums a few weeks ago to treat Patulous Eustachian Tube. I guess it has helped with that particular issue, but since then my tinnitus has spiked considerably. It was really bad initially and I was very stressed over it. I was putting it down to my hearing being worse after surgery, which it was, especially the left ear which was considerably worse. There was also a fair bit of blood in that ear following the surgery for whatever reason.

So it's been 2 weeks now and the hearing from my left ear has got notably better at least. It's not great, but better. However, I think the eardrum hasn't fully healed yet as it does feel inflamed and uncomfortable at times. I also still have the debilitating tinnitus. I had moderate to bad tinnitus before the surgery but I could deal with it, especially with ambient noise around because it would be masked. But now it's spiked to such a degree that it overrides everything and I struggle to focus on other things as it's constantly at the front of my mind with the piercing ringing. It is difficult to function normally and I go back to work in a few days which I'm getting quite stressed about. Which I know only makes the tinnitus worse.

Has anyone experienced a really bad tinnitus spike after surgery, in particular after surgery involving the ears or grommets? If so, did you find that it settled down to manageable levels as the weeks/months went on? Any advice appreciated thanks.

Indeed. It's been a further 3 weeks later and it's still absolutely terrible. Been back to the ENT doctors multiple times and they all told me they don't see anything physically wrong with the ear tubes and that I should wait a further 2 months before deciding if I want them out. I begrudgingly agreed because I don't want to rush into another surgery that will once again disturb my hearing system. Although one would assume that removing the two intrusive objects that are lodged in my now perforated ear drums could only improve the situation. But with tinnitus, nothing is certain :(. I was given Ciproxin ear drops a few weeks ago and then was told to try 'EarCalm' spray, but not really noticed any benefit from these. Crazy that I really wish I had my old tinnitus back, which at the time I thought was terrible. But at least I could function and enjoy life for the most part. This is no longer the case and I'm just absolutely fed up.

For anyone out there reading this and considering grommets, or long-term ventilations tubes (which I apparently have), I would certainly think long and hard about it and explore all other options first. If I could go back, I would not choose this.

I had tubes put in my ears a month ago this Monday. After a week, my tinnitus is considerably worse. I've had it for years but it's never bothered me until now. I'm about to lose my mind. I have it scheduled to have them removed on Tuesday the 14th. Anyone have first hand experience with this making the tinnitus go back to like it was before the tubes? If I could go back and undo this, I would.

It appears @BB1 has/had the same issue you are having. He hasn't been posting in a few months it from looking at his profile, but perhaps quote him in his thread or send him a private message and ask how he is doing currently. It's always possible he stopped posting because things improved.

In theory grommets can be a cause of hyperacusis. When grommets are removed and the eardrum closes again... that's going to be LOUD.

Another peace of advice: ask your ENT to put you on local anesthesia to remove grommets.
