Cause of Tinnitus
Remeron/stress/back issues?
Hi, I started having panic attacks in July, fast forward to October, I was put on Remeron (Mirtazapine). Four days later I woke up after having a nightmare with screaming tinnitus in both ears.

Called my psychiatrist who said it was not listed as a side effect, I was having psychological somatic issues. Went to my PCP and two ENTs who said my tinnitus was not caused by Remeron. I'm off it 2 months and no improvement.

I will need to start a new anti-depressant soon. Surviving on .25mg Klonopin 3x a day. Went to a chiro who said she can cure it because my c1 and c2 are so off as well as my jaw.

I had two adjustments and so far no changes but my legs are now the same height.

After two adjustments my tinnitus did spike but went back down, hoping that may be a good sign.

Will update as I go.

Tomorrow will be my third adjustment wish me luck. Could the remeron have caused this? I only saw it could have like a 1% chance of deafness in side effects. Seems to be the antidepressant of choice for those with T?

I went again 2x so far no improvement they said it could taje 3 months. Spiked again after adjustment again. Went down that evening. Going to an audiologist on Thursday will follow up again after visit.

@Tretred

I was on mirtazapine only for a month, but I was put on it after I got my T because I was desperate for sleep. It did cause spikes in my T, which is why I didn't stay on it for long. My T is related to my jaw as well, due to dental aligners I used that changed my bite, which threw off my jaw. I have been seeing a chiropractor since October, and it definitely took about 10 to 12 visits before my T started to calm down. I was going twice a week for a while, then once a week, then every other week, now I am down to seeing her once a month. I take a multivitamin, Omega 3 supplements, I wear a nightguard, and I drink tea at night with zinc and vitamin C. I try to exercise and just keep busy to distract from the T. Since it all started I am at a mild level with occasional spikes, but definitely not as loud as it was in the beginning.

Have you seen a dentist about your jaw? A nightguard might be helpful. Clenching your teeth definitely does not help your T if related to your jaw.

Give it some time, there doesn't seem to be a quick answer, I wish there was. Good luck with your appointments! I hope you get some relief.

Thanks I have gone to the chiro about 10 times very little change. He said it may take 3 months. I am getting a nightguard this week. Hoping it will help. I take vitamin d, b, omega 3 and magnesium. I will update as i go. I am seeing a neurologist today too. Thanks for the reply!

Maybe try some chelated zinc, but don't overdose on it... also something called Hydroxyzine cut some guys tinnitus in half and could be worth a try?

@Tretred

Hopefully the nightguard will help make a difference. After I got my nightguard, I had followup visits with my dentist to make sure I was still making proper contact with my nightguard. Around mid December, I noticed I was having a bit of a spike with my T. I just so happened to have an appointment with my dentist to followup with my nightguard. Turns out I wasn't making proper contact with my nightguard, so she made adjustments. A few days after I noticed my T came down again to a more mild level. According to my dentist, any minor shift in bite can effect your jaw, if your jaw is thrown off it effects your neck. It's like a domino effect.

I am still under the 6 month mark with my T, so I am hoping for continued improvement as well. My best days seem to be related to how busy and distracted I am. The less I notice it because I am preoccupied, the more it falls in the background.

Just out of curiousity are you going to a NUCCA (upper cervical chiro specialist)? I don't see a NUCCA, but as much as I do like my chiropractor, I am contemplating trying an advanced atlas orthogonal procedure. The chiropractor uses a machine to precisely adjust the C1 and C2. I've made improvement with how I have done things thus far, so I don't know if it's worth changing. We'll see.

No I am seeing an upper cervical spine chiro. He is guaranteed me it will go away within 3 months. We will see. I just saw a neurologist who basically blew me off but ordered an mri anyway. I currently am in the process of a full mouth reconstruction, i just started invisalign but my dentist said to give the nightguard a shot. We will see. I really hope this works im so afraid this will be forever.

@zenneth yes i was using hydroxzine prior to my t starting. Going to talk to my pysch about resuming it and cutting back the klonopin

Leave this chiro now.
Looks like a liar to take money worth of 3 months.
There's no guarantee in the world that makes tinnitus go away except death.
Wtf is wrong with you? Do u know what a fragile state I am in about this? Word of advice be careful what u say to new people...you may just drive rhem over the edge with comments like this.

@Tretred

That's a shame the neurologist just blew you off like that. I used those smile direct club aligners, there really isn't much monitoring going on when you use those except for photos you send to have them check up on your progress like once or twice. Dumb decision on my part to use those. You are smart by going through your dentist, you will have them monitoring your progress all throughout and they will be able to make the adjustments you need if necessary. Yes I think definitely give the nightguard a try. I will say the headaches I used to wake up with in my left temple are completely gone now that I use a nightguard. I don't wake up with a sore jaw anymore either. My T has definitely calmed down since incorporating the nightguard.

Since you will be using invisalign, I have learned from my dentist as your teeth shift it changes your bite slightly, every change in your bite requires your jaw muscles to work differently, that then can effect your jaw alignment, and your neck. There is a domino effect that happens, so keeping up with the Chiro visits maybe helpful. I've never tried acupuncture, but there are people who seem to have success with it, it could possibly help with anxiety too.

Yes my tinnitus did change with sound in the beginning. I remember I used to be able to hear it over loud sounds. Sometimes I thought it was reacting to the sound of my shower. Now that doesn't seem to happen anymore. If the tv is on, dryer is going, my kids are talking I really don't seem to notice it unless I tune into it. If I don't get enough sleep that seems to make it worse the next day. It started in my left ear. It can switch from left to right, but never both at the same time. I used to not be able to be in a quiet room, it was loud and sometimes felt like my ear was vibrating. Now I can be in a quiet room, it's in the background sometimes, but it all depends on how much attention I give it. I have had days where I barely notice it. Does yours change or stay at a consistent tone? Mine goes up a little when I lay down, however I can be standing in the room and barely hear it. My dentist and chiro both believe it's the positioning of the jaw and neck when I lay down. When my T is more noticeable I equate it to someone using a high pitched handheld vacuum in the distance. There are other days where i feel it is a soft whistle or buzz.

All i can say is that as my bite has shifted back and my jaw has started to adjust to the new bite and with my chiro and nightguard I am definitely in a better place than when this started. Distraction is also big for me. I keep myself busy with work, stuff around the house, and get involved with my kids activities.

Is that your child in the profile photo? So adorable. I have two children, they are a big part of my progress. When they started to notice that I wasn't myself when this all started I could see the concern in their eyes and it just motivated me to get beyond this for them. I have my good days and not so good days, but the good days have started to outweigh the bad for sure.

Hang in there!! Hoping you get some relief soon!
(P.S. sorry to bore you with such a long reply)

Thank you for replying tou are giving me hope. Mine gets very loud high pitched. In both ears, im hoping this will calm down. Yes that is my little guy in the picture. So hard to get through this with him. Hes only 3 so I really have to push myself to get through this. Fingers crossed it works. Lets keep each other updated as we go.

@Tretred

Yes definitely keep me posted! Don't hesitate to reach out to family or friends if you need help with your little guy. Early on i was trying to hide it from family and friends. One day i couldn't take it anymore and just broke down in tears to my family. It really helped make a difference once i had their support. Try to use white noise and/or masking right now to help you out and avoid quite rooms if you can. I think you mentioned your doctor was going to switch up your meds now that you are off mirt. Hopefully that will help you get through. I think once you get the dental/jaw issues under control that will help bring down the volume. Wishing you all the best!

Hey not great, I had to go into the hospital to get my anxiety under control. I was told the tinnitus is due to my anxiety at the hospital. I am now on zoloft and xyprexa. My anxiety is way down but my T has changed. I am going to start back with the chiro this week. Idk what to believe at this point. How are you coming along? Thanks for checking in!

@Tretred

I am sorry that things have been rough. Anxiety is awful, and combined with T just makes it worse. I am glad the new meds are helping with the anxiety. Has the T gone up in volume? I remember after taking Mirtazapine right before bed, I would be watching TV and the mirt would raise the T to a level where it was very loud and obvious over the sound of TV. Did you get your nightguard yet? Maybe getting back to the chiro this week will help. I am rooting for you to get through this. You will find your way.

I am doing ok. My anxiety and stress are under control at the moment, but my job gets really busy over the next couple months. So hoping I don't go backwards. I just passed the 5 month mark since all this started, and I am happy with my improvement. My tinnitus is at a very mild level, I don't notice it unless I really listen, which I try not to do. At night when I lay down is when I notice it most. Although, the volume has come down a little while laying down, so I look at that as a win. I've been keeping a journal for many years ever since I had another health issue after my son was born. It definitely helps me understand my triggers, what works what doesn't. I recently started incorporating massage of my jaw muscles every night, and I noticed it helps open up my left ear, which always felt full since all this started.

Keep me posted. Hang in there. Wishing you all the best!

Glad to hear things are improving for you. I did get my nightguard but it does not fit, I am going back this week to see what they can do. My ringing is low today hoping it will continue this way. Such a strange thing tinnitus, I hope we both have it go away. I will update as I go through treatment and thank you so much for checking in.

@Tretred
Glad you are having better days. Yes I hope we get some permanent relief. I've been working longer days in the office and I am finding sitting at the desk longer even with my back support causes my jaw, head, and neck to act up. It's always my left side, it goes from my jaw to my ear, then back of my head, and down my neck. When it gets bad, it will make my T louder, but still manageable. My dentist suggested wearing my night guard to work, but it's kind of bulky. It's a slow process, but everything I've heard and read say it can take a long while for inflammation to calm down. I've read about cold laser therapy and my dentist mentioned TENS therapy, when work isn't as hectic, I'd like to look into other things I can do to calm the inflammation. We are managing for now, and that's all we can do.

Have you considered cold packs? Also, have you considered a work station where you can actually stand up and perhaps avoid what's causing some of the inflammation? One member here had some good improvements with taking curcumin for inflammation, though I don't know if it was more than temporary relief (I'd take that!).

I started a thread last year entitled, Sodium Thiosulfate — "May" Help w/ Hearing Loss and/or Tinnitus. Below is a snippet of a testimonial in that thread by a man who who uses this inxpensive supplement to help his tinnitus situation, and believes it's primarily because of its anti-inflammatory effects. I've just started experimenting with it, but it's too soon to notice any results. -- Best!

""Now, I tend to be sensitive to substances. At first, I used just three drops to mitigate a neuroinflammatory disorder that I have (of which tinnitus is a part). I feel it at this dose (a subtle but assured change in headspace noticed over a period of days, likely only due to a the strong anti-inflammatory action, in addition to a reduction in symtpoms).""

Thank you so much for your reply! I apologize for just getting back to you now. I've been so busy with work lately. Thank you for the suggestions. I've been making it a point to stand up stretch real quick and walk around the office at various points in the day. I have been taking the curcumin for inflammation, I do believe it helps. My employer, has had a massage therapist come into the office once a week to help relieve the stress for the staff. I've told her about my TMJ issues and neck issues. She has made a huge difference for me, and I've incorporated my own daily stretches to help. I will look into that supplement, sounds interesting. Overall, I am doing better than I thought. The massage therapist told me my temporalis and masseter on my left side were so tight and knotted more than she has ever felt from her clients, but now she is noticing improvement. I think time, stretches, massage, chiro adjustments, supplements, my nightguard have all helped. Granted it took a while to feel some relief, but I am thankful for it. I also realize it's necessary for me to keep at it, so i don't go backwards. I can't say for certain, but I am almost positive a combination of stress and TMJ/TMD is what brought this all on for me. In a way this whole experience it's opened my eyes to taking care of myself and not letting stress take over my life.

I hope you are well, and thank you again for reaching out! :)

It sounds like you're really on to some really good things. I just tagged you on another post about exercises for somatic tinnitus you may be interested in. -- One thing I started recently is learning how to do self-acupuncture. I've only just started this past week, but feel it really holds a LOT of potential. I did a number of spots around my right ear/TMJ area, and the following day noticed more relaxation in my entire face than I have in probably years.

Good to hear from you. Happy to hear things are heading in the right direction for you. Regarding how your experience has "opened your eyes". In't it interesting how even with some of the most difficult challenges we face, there always seems to be a silver lining?

Thanks Lane! So happy acupuncture is making some positive change for you!! You are reading my mind, I've been saying one thing I haven't tried yet is acupuncture to help calm the muscles on the left side of my face and neck. I definitely want to give a try. I am totally with you about trying different things, and keeping at those things that provide some relief. I am also open to trying more exercises on my own. The T has calmed down a lot, I notice it when i lay down at night, but the volume has come down greatly. The muscles on the left side of my face, head and neck will act up every now and then and i can feel the inflammation, but it's not a daily struggle any more. My left ear will occasionally twitch and feel full, I equate it to eyelid twitching. It doesn't hurt, doesn't make a sound, just a sensation. Again, I believe it's all muscular for me, so if i can keep the inflammation at bay most of the time I am winning the battle. You are absolutely right there is always a silver lining, your perspective changes 100%. We need to be our own advocates for health, no one set formula will help each individual.

I hope you get continued relief, thank you so much for sharing your insight and information. This forum has helped me out a lot, and I am thankful for it. Wishing you all the best!

So I had to take a break from my chiro due to the extreme anxiety I was battling. I have that under control and started work again about a month ago. My T has changed, not as loud but still there and still intrusive to me. I went back to my chiro today and got adjusted. After my left year became louder and my right ear lower, usually it is the reverse. Just wanted to update in case this actually works. My next step is to return to my dentist to get my invisalign started again.

My ringing changed to a hiss today. It's the lowest it has ever been since October. Maybe there is something to this chiro thing.

Hi @Tretred
I am so happy you are having positive changes!! Sorry I haven't been on the site for a while, was looking to see if there were any updates today, and I was happy to see your posts.

Yes I agree there is something to Chiro for sure. I go to my Chiro about every six weeks and I have started to incorporate acupuncture as well. I do acupuncture once a week. My acupuncturist is helping me with the TMJ/TMD, my ears, anxiety, and monthly female issues. I have been feeling really well. The T is really low, and I need to tune into it to find it. Which I obviously try not to do. Of course tonight, the smoke detector went off in my home and I needed to get on a chair to shut it off, I was only exposed for 15 seconds to the noise. My ears were buzzing a little afterwards, but I don't think it was enough exposure to do long term damage. I am sure it will be fine. Going to keep up with my Chiro and Acupuncture.

I hope you have continued improvement! Keep me posted! Sorry for the late reply!

Hey there! So glad everything is going good for you too! I'm definitely going to keep up on my progress in this post in case there is someone new looking for answers. I've been thinking about accupuncture, I may give that a try.
