What Can I Do to Reverse Ototoxicity from Sertraline?

Hi guys,

I'm getting pretty frustrated and desperate with my tinnitus and I'm simply not getting much traction with the GP. My tinnitus was triggered after starting Sertraline. Unbelievably, I only took the drugs for 12 days at a very low dose before stopping as the ringing appeared immediately. To clarify, I took 25 MG for 9 days and 50 MG for a further 3 days.

I stopped the medication eight weeks ago and although the noise is slightly lower it is still very invasive.

I find it very upsetting and worrying that my T is still here. I have clearly had an ototoxic reaction but I'm alarmed that it has not subsided after eight weeks. As I say, as soon as the ringing came I quit the medication. I didn't go to any loud concerts during that time I don't have hearing loss apparently.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there any hope that it will go away or is this going to be permanent? I know everyone is different but I find it hard to believe that such a short course of medication could cause such a reaction. Clearly, my emotions are all bound up with this now and stress is surely a contributing factor.

I would love to hear any messages of hope from people who have taken this drug and recovered wholly or at least to a greater extent.

Hey Lizzie,

Unfortunately with ototoxity the only thing you can do is give it time. I do think most people recover from drug induced tinnitus if they only used it for a short period. It is not uncommon with some medication that it produces tinnitus as a withdrawal symptom. The fact that it is already slightly lower is a sign that it is slowly improving.

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. To clarify, are you saying that it is likely that it will EVENTUALLY go? I'm not asking you to commit to any answer it's just I can't get any answers from doctors! If I knew it would last six months let's say, but would eventually go, I could probably cope better with it mentally !

I'm sorry but there isn't a definitive answer to that, nor any time frame. I think the doctors are very cautious about giving predictions.
Its like when i once got injured the doctor said several weeks to months to heal. Then it changed into 6 months to a year. Everybody is different so its just impossible to predict these things. Only time can tell.

But once again, it is more likely to EVENTUALLY dissapear with that kind of cause. Withrawel from ssri can take weeks to months. But like you said i cannot fully commit to the fact if it will go away or not :/

Sert is not supposed to be ototoxic but it does seem to give some people T. My T that I've had since 1992 changed due to it. Consultant says not so, it's stress, but I know different. T is unpredictable and yours might very well go down given that it's new. I've been on Sert for along time and had T before I started. Recently my dosage of Sert was changed and after ONE 100mg I had new noise. I stopped this dosage immediately!
It's difficult to predict how T will decrease but you will find that it's less of a threat given time.
You have a baby I think, so you might be extra tired and that makes T more difficult to cope with. Sert takes a long time to leave the system so there's hope that yours will reduce more or even disappear. Eve

Hi there.

I was given Doxycycline for a sinus infection. Im not sure but I think this may have caused a louder/worse Tinnitus than I had. I am also waiting to see if it will fade.

Thanks Eve. Yes baby stress has certainly made things worse. Just hoping as u say that even if doesn't disappear it just becomes less 'threatening' to my psyche. Best, Lizzie
