Does anyone find their hyperacusis increases after running? My right ear gets blocked/headache on the right side, more sound sensitivity, increased tinnitus...

Is pounding the pavement affecting the eustachian tubes?

From my experiences I'm starting to notice a big correlation.

I know that strenuous exercise can be a migraine trigger, migraines can cause inflammation of mucous membranes including in the eustachian tubes (I've gotten a ton of ear infections because of this "fun" little feature).

However, when I wear earplugs I have to wear heavy padded slippers and/or tip-toe around the house because the pounding in my ears from my foot falls mimics the occlusion effect.
It's sounds like a combination of the two if you run with ear plugs in and if you get migraines, but this is just what I find to be the case with me.

Good luck finding out!

yeah a dentist told me i suffer from migraines... but im fiarly sure i dont... i get al these pains in my head depending on my sitting position... or if I'm straining myself....i think its some nerve in my head.....Im considering a trip to a neurologist... already done an MRI so not a tumor anyway....

i had a big setback recently and really messed with my eustachian tubes.....they are very mysterious things... i take magnesium and curcumin....not sure if it helps....

Do you run in noisy neighborhoods/gyms/with headphones?

i wish i was still using headphones...but i gave up using them a year ago.... no just outside, relatively quiet, speaker on my iphone but not that loud....the more i run the more i can feel my ear getting blocked.......

I have severe hyperacusis, and I've experienced the same thing. Please let me know if you figure out the reason, as my condition is still a mystery.

After exercising, my startle sensitivity is much, much worse. And this lasts for weeks. Do you think it's eustachian tube related? If it was my cochlea, I don't understand why exercise could worsen it.

I get that blood pressure goes up while exercising, but it seems like there should be more to it.

My guess would be... blood flow, blood pressure?

I was convinced for the first two months of my treatment that I didn't have migraines, but it's your body, you know it better than anyone else. You've looked into eustachian tube dysfunction already I assume? I was convinced there for a while I had that, but my ENT did a pressure test on my ear drums - I don't know if you've ever had that done - and if it comes back normal like mine did than that means that it's not ETD.

But if you have any doubts about the migraines, what finally convinced me what a book I read. The doctor goes over conditions like Eustachian tube dysfunction and explains how a migraine can actually cause symptoms that appear to cause something like that. If you are interested I picked it up on amazon for like 10 bucks, it's called "Heal your Headache, The 1-2-3 Program for Taking on your Pain" by David Buchholz, MD. The guy that wrote the book worked at John hopkins neurology for over 2o years as kinda the 'Dr House' - the guy you send patients to when no one else can figure out what's wrong with them. I read the book in one sitting and it convinced me that I actually did have migraines after all because none of my doctors had actually explained it to me like Dr Buchholz did. I figure it's worth a shot, all else fails you lost 10 bucks and a couple hours reading.

If you're not interested, I get it, there's some things people have offered me *coughcough essential oils/holistic medicines cough* that I am completely not interested in so I get it.
Good luck!

What type of exercise are you doing ? Im thinking its the high impact nature of running that is messing with the ear.... im going to give running a break.....maybe in a month or so i will try some exercise bike training.... low impact and not push it too much and see whtat happens......i think if the eustacian tube isnt working right, putting it under strain or high impact might mess with it.... I had a setback, an alarm, not sure how sound can have so much effect on the eustacian tubes though....

Thanks for the recommendation, i will definitely give it a read, Im reading a lot these days. My eustacian tubes were doing well...then got hit with an alarm going off in work and they are seriously messed up now

Any chance in the book does it say a migrane can involve pain in a tooth ? my pathway is tooth - jaw - ear - eye- side of the head... been to dentist/ENT/MRI.. all of it other then a neurologist

Yes running does make it worse. I have noticed increased sensitivity, headaches and ear burning plus now even louder tinnitus.

Two reasons pressure on whole body and ears from pounding concrete. I am thinking as it's summer to run on grass as it definitely has less impact on ears. Secondly and think more detrimental to the ears is that even a few cars going past me has an adverse effect. There are less cars on the road at present but I can definitely feel something with only two or three cars.

Gotcha. I only ask because for a certain time I was going on walks around my neighborhood and it's not crazy loud but does have cars passing by and a good amount of people and my ears would always feel extra sensitive by the end of my walks and my tinnitus would spike.

I have corresponded with many people with tinnitus that have stopped running due to their tinnitus and hyperacusis (if it is present) becoming worse. Others have said they are not affected by running. Those that are, I think it's due to impact underfoot, as they run on hard ground or on the treadmill - it travels up the legs into the body towards the head and auditory system including the inner ear. I am affected by running so don't do it. I exercise using a crosstrainer/elliptical machine, my feet don't make contact with the floor so there is not impact underfoot.

So the crosstrainer/elliptical machine have no negitive affect on your ears ?

Before a recent setback (a big one) i was able to run with a small amount of pressure/ETD happening a few hours later... but now with my hyeracusis way up... it happens during the run.... I had taken two weeks of from running and my ears were noticeably improving and then after running, all sorts of ear related problems.

Pros: I have identified a thing that is hindering my recovery.
Cons: Cant run, lost a great way to keep fit/get rid of anxiety.

Going to get an exercise bike, stop running completely.

Since you have noticed your hyperacusis has increased from running my advice is to stop. I have a semi-professional elliptical machine at home made by Life Fitness, they make commercial gym equipment. I have been using for 4 years and notice no adverse affects on my tinnitus. The model I have is E5 crosstrainer.

Hope this helps

Yes!!!! Dr Buchholz has sections in this book in which he tells about a few patients who actually had multiple teeth removed before he diagnosed them migraines! With mine, the right side of my jaw aches and my right canines feel like I have a tooth ache. All migraines.
Of course this may not be the case with everyone, but with me personally I had so many symptoms that seemed to have nothing in common, but then it all turned out to be migraines. Hope it helps though.

That is definitely part of it, I remember taking Serc tablets and it was similar, but after running it's more and worse
Do you run with anything on your ears, earplugs, or listening to music etc?

I think maybe the best is to run with naked ears, without anything that may contribute further to the pressure derived from stepping on hard ground...

Wow! That's actually really interesting... I basically demanded that my dentist pull out one of my teeth (back molar)... She said no, said that they get people having half their teeth pulled out in search of the pain... they x rayed my tooth said it looks ok... my tooth/jaw/head get painful from both sound and physical activity. One of the other dentist confidently diagnosed me with migraines. Sometimes i feel like me trying to figure out what all these symptoms mean is like a drunk trying to put a jig saw puzzle together.

Were you prescribed something for your migraines? I have to take way too much codeine/paracetamol... which is not healthy.

So... here's where it gets depressing. I was so happy to finally have a diagnosis, I mean how many people out there are born with hyperacusis and tinnitus? And then it's been getting so bad this last year, and no unbearable these past 3 months (I'm 18). So my specialist has me on 50 mg Amitriptyline (this is also used as a depression medication in large doses, and as a sleep aid in smaller doses - win win if you struggle sleeping from your tinnitus), and just got me up to 100 mg of Topiramate (he says I can't take anymore, and it's going to take a month before we can see if it's going to work because so far it isn't). I'm taking magnesium supplements daily and I am very strictly following a migraine diet, I have not cheated a single time since I started 3 months ago, and like I said I'm still just getting worse. I just got my daiths pierced in both ears, which there's no actual research proving that piercing your ears can cure migraines, but if this Topiramate and amitriptyline don't start working in the next month our next step is a new medication (which could be dangerous for my heart's health) and botox injections in my forehead. Again, I cannot stress this enough, I'm freaking 18 and they want to give me botox. I have no idea what that would look like or anything about it, but to say the least I am very freaked out. So yeah I'm doing a lot for my migraines but I'm getting worse by the day so...
But, because you @NewLionel are male your chances of recovering from migraines are much higher than mine because I'm female. If you get the "Heal your Headache" book Dr Buchholz also talks about migraine medications, each ones effects on your body, what category of drug they are etc etc. He also gives other advice on how to bring up your migraine "threshold" as he explained it.

I hope this is all helping you out, I would definitely ask your doctor what she/he thinks about migraine treatments.

Also, when you read the book and look at the diet, don't get overwhelmed, I did that diet for two months and finally had a meltdown because I lived off of nothing but oatmeal and cream of wheat for 3 weeks straight. (I'm going to culinary school, I know how to cook - but this diet took all the fun out of it) It's a pretty strict list. I could send you a less restrictive, and better updated list given to me by my doctor.

3 months since major setback, very marginal improvement... people's voices still causing me a lot of trouble, tinnitus a lot worse then it was before setback and very volatile. My Eustachian tubes feel really messed up, they move/ expand/contract when I talk. Going to go to the doctor to get sleeping pills, maybe some melatonin.

Is it worth with getting a nasal steroid spray for the Eustachian tubes?

I feel like I need to do something... to say my thoughts are getting dark would be an understatement...

You need to get some benzos bro... find a way.

Depending on where you live, you could look into Etizolam as it is legal in most of the USA. Very similar to Xanax, but I actually prefer Etizolam over it. Significantly helps with my H pain, burning, and sensitivity. PM me if you have any questions about it.

Hey man, how are you holding up?

Nope not daily as it is a benzo and I don't want to become physically dependent. Twice a week with a 2-3 days in between
