  • I'll be gone for a long while. Just wanted to update by saying my T is a lot better and goes away almost completely sometimes.
Does T becoming higher pitch mean it's getting better? What about lower pitch?
    H
I think the only thing that can be said about that is that changing tones/pitch can be good. Unrelenting, constant tinnitus with the same tone/pitch is probably less likely to change/get better. But changing tinnitus might not mean anything.
    Bill Bauer
There is something to what HeavyMantra is saying. T being relentlessly at the same level and pitch is the worst. Nevertheless, on its way to "can hear it only in quiet rooms" stage, T goes from high pitch to a buzz, to a high pitch hiss and then to a low-pitch quiet hiss. So I would say that when the pitch is higher, it's not a good sign, whereas if the pitch gets lower, it's a great sign and a major milestone.
Hey Asey! How's your T today? Has it settled since the onset? I've had T since April this year. Mine varies day-to-day. Never becomes better, never becomes worse. It destroyed me to begin with, and still annoys me now - but I have at least 99% of my life back. It definitely gets easier. :) Just can't use headphones anymore.

I would say there has been some improvements. However, I experiencing so many other symptoms it's hard to know anymore. It has definitely gotten better tho.
Received a free google nest mini with my Spotify premium account. "Hey google, play relaxing nature sounds." Nice! Just what I needed.
Just wanna say I had a dental appointment a few days ago and my tinnitus hasn't spiked. I took precautions tho. :)
TIL, they can fix a damaged nerve by removing it, graft onto it and put it back, giving sensation back, but they can't cure tinnitus.
    Bill Bauer
What do you want them to do - remove the brain, fix tinnitus, and put the brain back in?
    asey20
    Bill Bauer
If they remove the brain, T Will in fact fall silent and it will stay silent even after they put the brain back in!

    We're onto something.
Even if I am making progress, I can't help but feel sad. :( What do I do?
    W
It takes time. Focus on healthy habits consistently. Emotional reasoning is no help. Feeling sad is not a reason to not go for a walk, etc. Turning sadness around is like doing a 180 with a cruise ship, it just takes time. I'd also recommend spending a "limited" amount of time giving back on something. Write your representatives and request funding for research.
    asey20
@Watasha Well I haven't allowed this to prevent me to stop going for a walk. It's one of my joys rn. I also am trying to give back to people i various different ways rn.
    asey20
I guess I'm getting better everyday, but it's a very slow process.
Yesterday was shitty, but I heard silence today! Gonna try to think about T less now and get my life back.
    asey20
It's super depressing though when it gets louder at night. I need to learn how to function again.
Today my T was 97% gone for a while. It was amazing feeling. If it stays permanently like that I'm basically cured. I really needed that.
    that you in japan?
    asey20
    Yeah
    Shizune
That's cool. Which area? I was able to go earlier this year before all this bs struck. I hope you can go back again one day (because I don't know if I can)
    asey20
Kept getting fleeting T today. Tinnitus is louder now after a few days of mostly quiet. Idk if good or bad sign. Disappointed...Or not. lame
    Bill Bauer
Ignore the daily trend. What matters is the monthly trend. Few quiet days early on is a great sign.
    asey20
    asey20
Thank god. I woke up and it's quiet again. It was so loud last night.
I had a few "silent" moments today. Gentle hissing is almost silence...
    asey20
It's not a fluke. My tinnitus is actually reducing after a month.
Are we all being delusional or is some relief (treatments) coming within the next 5 years?
    Bill Bauer
My uneducated guess is that there is a 35% chance of something that might work for T being released sometime over the next 5 years.
    A
I'm 50-50! Some days I think it's delusional, other days I think our saviour (or at least a little help) is around the corner.

You are still very new to this. Protect your ears and stay away from loud noise and ototoxic medications.
    asey20
@Bill Bauer Those aren't bad odds. Guessing the odds of something being released the next decade is even higher.
Well officially 1 month with tinnitus. Guess it's not going away.
    asey20
@sleepingsiren at least if I could pick my noise. Thanks. I hope it goes away too, or we make it to a future where there is better treatments.
    asey20
I'm just really depressed. There is this girl I like that I see being in my future. I just don't know how stable I can be or want to ruin her life because I lose it. :( I used to look to the future but I don't anymore. If this could go away or get reduced and more manageable I think I'd be able to look ahead again.
    Bill Bauer
Trust me, it would have been 1000 times more exhausting if it were to be super loud 100% of the time.
The problem is that it's not just a noise, it's a sensation.
    asey20
    GBB
What sensation do you have? I feel like nails on chalkboard/tickling in my ears for 45 days and it's driving me nuts.
    Bill Bauer
If you've had it for more than 3 months, it will probably stay. Until that time there is still hope that it is temporary.
So hard to stay positive when everyones battle with T is different. I've been having near silent mornings last 2 days. It will fade.
Going to focus on myself and stop updating. I hope that someday it will go away, get lower and stop bothering me or there will be treatment!
Woke up at 5am and it's so loud. Honestly, I don't think this will get better. I'm exhausted.
    Bill Bauer
    > However it's just been pretty loud the last 24 hours and I'm having a tough time telling if it's getting better or not.

You need to wait for several months to be able to tell whether it is getting better. Ears heal very slowly.

I believe that HeavyMantra's experience isn't common. It is also possible that eventually the fraction of the good days will keep increasing, but of course nothing is guaranteed.
    asey20
@Bill Bauer It is true that I seem a bit better after waking up right now. I'll try and be patient and find a way to deal with my anxiety I guess.
    Bill Bauer
The daily trend has too much noise and is meaningless. Focus on the monthly trend.
I can no longer gauge the sound of my T. Don't know if it's getting quieter or not or if I'm making progress. Pretty tired of this.
Turns out it actually is getting quieter. Can barely hear it in the car anymore. I will keep doing what I'm doing. Less anxious now.

    sensualmosquito
Thats what I'm periodically noticing too. It'll be a while before things improve. It takes forever. Im only 2 months in right now myself.
    Bill Bauer
When it comes to forecasting one's likelihood of recovery, what matters is the monthly trend and the global lows. What happens on any given day (e.g., a spike) isn't important.
It's been 3 weeks now. Is there any reason to be optimistic that it will go away or there will be treatments in the future?
    asey20
@Bill Bauer i hope so. I'm having trouble coping sometimes. It seems to fluctuate a lot, however I can't tell if that's just because I'm not focusing on it or it actually is changing.
    G
    Yes and yes.
    asey20
I'm glad you guys are optimistic. Let's hope good things happen for all of us via treatment or time!
Seems like noise doesn't spike my tinnitus. I guess that is good news. Still not trying to cause damage.
    Bill Bauer
The next 2-3 years or so you will likely be vulnerable. You might not be getting temporary spikes, but that doesn't mean you won't get a permanent spike.
Not sure if it's getting quieter or I'm dealing with it better. I'm sure it's both. One step at a time I guess. It may even go away someday.
    Bill Bauer
Habituation happens when one is about 2-3 years in. So your T is probably getting quieter.

A common outcome is getting to the "can hear it only in quiet rooms" stage. Of course some people report hearing complete silence.
    asey20
That's good news then. Let's keep the progress going. Sleep has been helping and I'm starting to sleep better. Even if this goes away I will I'll stay on this forum to support the cause.
Surprisingly, my T is bothering me less today. It is quieter albeit still noticeable sometimes. Healing maybe? I hope. :)
    asey20
Nights are still bad but at least I get some bliss in the mornings now.
Went to ER and the doc had T. Told me he just doesn't think about it. Guess I'll just have to live with it then and hope it gets better.
Starting to forget what true silence sounds like. I still feel like I have some silent moments thought idk if my brain is tricking me.
Woke up today with T almost non existent in left ear (even with ears plugged). Not sure if right ear got better too. Still getting bad sleep
    tbuzz89
This is a good sign. You're going to experience ups and downs but from everything people say on here, the early fluctuations are a good thing.
    asey20
    I hope so
    asey20
Isn't it strange how it can become barely noticeable in the morning but gets worse. Especially the more that I think about it. Must be a sign that I can eventually get this under control to a point where I'll barely notice it.
This is pure torture. If my right ear could just stop a reach the same level as my left ear I would be fine. I can't sleep.
    asey20
I also noticed that my left ear gets louder when I plug it in but my right ear doesn't really get louder anymore. Idk what any of this means or if its good signs. I guess its good that there isn't tones really present and its mostly static sounds and sensations.
    asey20
Anyways, thanks guys for the support. It's been helpful and I don't think I could make it without the support. Sometimes I cannot really hear it and I feel normal again. I guess this is good and hopefully this continues to be the case.
    T
Yes, Tinnitus generally does fluctuate A LOT at the start. That's totally normal and expected. As time goes on, it will generally settle down and lessen, if not disappear. Try to only read the success stories on this site if the support forum is making you anxious, and give it time.
