  • Where does everyone live? How does environmental factors like humidity effect tinnitus.
    ErikaS
We have had some hot days here already and we have minisplits in our home since it doesn't have duct work (mid century modern from 1960s) and they are basically like big fans blowing… awful on my reactive T, literally no idea what I'm going to do all summer.
    Ryan Scott
@ErikaS I always thought those things were so cool and heard they were efficient. I never would of imagined they would be loud though. Then again I never thought I would consider the air velocity going into a central unit loud either but tinnitus lol.
    SarahMLFlemmer
I'm in central California! I actually have family down as we speak from Lafayette, Louisiana! And guess what! My brother-in-law that I just met has T! Crazy, small, world!
Hope everyone has a good day! Been feeling pretty down lately.
    Ryan Scott
@ErikaS I agree, it's crazy to think how much limited funding tinnitus has got over the past few decades considering how much it effects people. It honestly seems tinnitus research is just picking up over the last decade.
    Ryan Scott
@gameover Being memorial day weekend does not help much either. My whole family is cooking and swimming but the music is too loud so I am just chilling at home.
    ErikaS
@Ryan Scott maybe in the future for you they can sacrifice the music for your presence ?
    How are you Ryan?
    Ryan Scott
@gameover Just reaching the 6 month mark and haven't had any improvements yet man, just taking it day by day. Even though I have been working remote for 6 months I was offered a promotion at work which I probably won't be taking just because of I don't want anymore stress. How are you?
    gameover
Very bad. My spike from yesterday finally went down, but my mental state is horrible. Panic attack, crying. It's admirable you can work, I don't feel like I can. Good luck to you.
    How is everyone's Saturday going?
    H
I am now going through a spike/worsening that may or may not been noise induce so I'm not advising you do all those things. Did all of that without hearing protection I might add. In hindsight it's not the wisest idea and I won't make those mistakes again
    Ryan Scott
@Hardwell Mine was caused by acoustic trauma, someone shot a shotgun on the side of me before I could put on hearing protection. This condition has just been so traumatic even if my tinnitus calms down I will live so cautiously. I'm fine with giving up 90% of my hobbies just to be able and enjoy a cup of coffee outside in silence again lol.
    H
@Ryan Scott theres no good way to get tinnitus. But it does seem the one off acoustic traumas line gunshots have pretty decent outlooks. I'm confident this time next year you'll be in a much better place and you will be on that boat (hearing protection)
How are you Ryan? My T is bad and H took sudden turn for worse. Does not look like you have H. Do everything to not get it.
    Ryan Scott
@gameover I do not have Hypercusis thankfully. My tinnitus has pretty much progressively gotten worse since getting it 6 months ago not really sure why maybe inflammation. Thankfully the last month it seems to have been staying constant though. All in all everyday is a struggle and I am just a former shell of who I use to be but what else can we do.
    gameover
Good you do not have H.
Anyone familiar with ACEMg Sound Bites developed by Michigan State University? Link in comments.

I returned to drinking coffee after stopping for first 3 months. I don't think it has any effect on my T. One of my joys of life, decided to not let T take that away anymore. It took almost everything else.
    Ryan Scott
@gameover Idk I guess I feel like tinnitus has already took everything I love from me. My career, fishing, boat rides. So I guess my perspective is what's 1 more thing lol.
    gameover
Well, I did not see coffee having impact on T, so decided might as well drink it.
What do you take for sleep? Been having trouble sleeping lately.
    yeezysqueezy
i forgot to add that my weighted blanket has been amazing for me! only problem now is that it's hard to sleep without it
    RainbowCat
Like many here, I used a benzo a few times and a Z drug as well as other types. But now I only take valerian root and GABA. That said, my sleep got much better since I got more relaxed in general, I did CBTi, I take a ssri and in general I try not to put pressure on sleep.
    RainbowCat
If I find it hard to fall asleep (from the beginning or after waking up in the middle of the night) I tell to myself that it doesn't matter how much I sleep... And that makes the trick for me, and I sleep more and better ;)
Anyone here with tinnitus drive a Tesla? I know there was one thread on here where people said EVs spund made theirs worse.
    Damocles
Not a driver, @brixenbrixen, but if I was I'd personally prefer a SMART ForTwo. That said, I like how the i3 looks; very cool and futuristic looking.
    brixenbrixen
@Damocles had a smart fortwo for ten years - my little baby - it was just fun ! Now I have a Golf plus - still too loud for my ears - and I WANNA DRIVE
    Buddy123
we have two i3's in our household. very reliable, quiet, and peppy. limited range. Kinda bouncy, but fun to drive. we also have a Tesla . . . does not make my T worse, but EV's in general are quiet so it doesn't mask your T if you need that.
Anyone else with tinnitus take Adderall? Has it effected your tinnitus in any way?
Anyone here live somewhere on the beach/near in Florida. Thinking about making a move towards Jacksonville.
    ErikaS
We have good friends who live near Jacksonville. We always enjoy visiting them, the one thing I will say is the housing and apartment plans are so nice, but you have to drive like 10 minutes to get anything/anywhere. At least around where they lived !
    Ryan Scott
I am more interested in the St. Augustine area in particular because the fishing is so good there. But living seems more affordable in the Jacksonville area. Overall the area seems like a great place to live. I don't need a big fancy house just a quiet place lol.
Did anyone go back to college after getting tinnitus? Seems more difficult with T.
    yeezysqueezy
@Ryan Scott thank you! I hope you can go back to your studies this year. If you end up working with patients, T makes you have more empathy for a lot of invisible things people are struggling with. But also a good skill for anyone!
    yeezysqueezy
Hope that a lot of your credits can transfer! One of my best friends recently finished an accelerated BSN and they accepted a lot of her undergrad credits. Would be so cool to follow in your grandfather's footsteps!
    yeezysqueezy
@SamRosemary Congrats on almost reaching the finish line!!

How is everyone doing on this Sunday.
How many people find coffee makes their tinnitus worse?
    Damocles
It's not coffee that spikes some people's tinnitus, it's caffeine.

And if you are one of the lucky ones whose tinnitus responds to caffeine in this way, you will probably find the same effect is achieved with the use of any other stimulant also.
    Damocles
Additionally, the (genetic) factors that decide whose tinnitus will exhibit such a reaction and whose tinnitus won't, are seemingly as random as the ones that decide whose tinnitus will be affected by the weather.
    Flowergirl
@Damocles thats very interesting. I've wondered if weather was key because I'm one who is quite affected by it. 1 cup of coffee=no.
How's it going over there, Ryan?
    Ryan Scott
Thanks for checking in. Just taking it one day at a time trying to be optimistic which is sometimes hard as I'm sure you know lol.
    SarahMLFlemmer
@Ryan Scott I know, I'm so sorry. As long as I'm busy I'm pretty good but as soon as I sit down to relax, I'm quite bothered. Today was a good day, I am spring cleaning and purging like crazy.
i've had this for over a decade and boy that comment about no longer being active like u used to hits me more than u know. theres alot i missed out on in this 10 year nightmare, but what gives me hope is that with these newer discoveries, hopefully u guys wont suffer as long. anyway play it safe dont take risks, and remember Survival is key from here on out.
    Ryan Scott
I agree man, gotta play it safe. Hopeful Dr. Shores device is a big advancement and we can always be hopeful there are potential things in the pipeline that we don't even know about.
Did anyone else listen to the video on YouTube Dr. Cliff posted about Lenire?
    AnthonyMcDonald
He was probably bribed to say that it's a hail Mary and a cure for tinnitus. I don't think Lenire will last very long, as it, you know, doesn't f*cking work lol
    KoolKat
apparently cliff has tinnitus too, and tho u would like 2 think someone with tinnitus wouldnt lie about stuff like it treating 95% of patients. BUT STRANGER THINGS HAVE HAPPENED. N AT THE SAME TIME $$$ makes the world go round. lenire sucks and unless it was revamped recently lenire needs to be put out of business.
    Ryan Scott
@KoolKat Yes he has tinnitus and high frequency hearing loss in his right ear from the military.
So who else's tinnitus is quiet when they first wake up for like say 15 minutes? I wonder what's the theory behind this.
    brixenbrixen
I know this too … When I woke up in the middle of the night it could be that there is no Tinnitus … when I wake up it s quiet but then increasing … I agree with @ZFire
    SamRosemary
Mine used to be quiet when I first woke up. Sometimes I'd even lay there and try not to move as long as I could to keep the silence, but now it's super loud when I wake up.
    ZFire
Has anyone else gotten custom molded ear plugs? I am thinking about get some westone defend max plugs.
    DeanD
@Ryan Scott - I did, but personally I got a spike from the moulding. Audiologist said it may have reaggrivated my TTTS. I have only heard of one other who got a spike through moulding (theirs settled). Just to forewarn.
Havent tried the ear plugs Ive now received as a result.
    Ryan Scott
@DeanD Yeah I was reading your profile and seen how you got a spike from the molding process is what has been making me second guess getting them. Thats why I was kind of wondering if some people had the same experience as you. Seems pretty unlikely to me because the process is not loud and the molding shouldn't press against the ear drum. But I really don't want to take any chances and have any setbacks.
    DeanD
@Ryan Scott tbh everything Im getting at the moment seems to be rare.
My t was caused by microsuction in the ear canal, it may be my ear canal now is sensitive so although there was hardly any noise of the moulding it triggered the original cause and perhaps sensitivity not present in most cases.
I didn't take time off from my career after tinnitus, but did go to lower pay, lower stress jobs. It's more important to keep stress down in my life and keep things light. Everything changed in my life after tinnitus.
    Ryan Scott
Totally understand where you are coming from, my job does not really stress me out too much, but tinnitus has totally changed my view on life. Like I use to be interested in real estate, I worked in construction through college, but not real sure I want to be around power tools now.
    SarahMLFlemmer
@Ryan Scott Hang in there pal! I just noticed you live in Louisiana! I have family in Lafayette that's coming to visit in June!
"The best thing about this community is that people actually understand what you are going through. Much unlike the general public"

Amen to that. It's just not on other people's radar, even in most of the medical field. My focus is living a full and active life, but jettisoning anything that makes my tinnitus worse. It comes first because it has to.
    Ryan Scott
I find Tinnitus extremely unrelatable to the public compared to other disorders I guess mainly due to how abstract it is. Tinnitus is kind of like chemistry you can't normally see the reactions happening, but they indeed are lol.
    Ryan Scott
I agree now before I do anything it forces me to do a risk analysis of "how this will affect my tinnitus." Personally, I would rather skip the activity and not take the risk especially being I am young.
Did anyone take time away from their career when first getting tinnitus?
    Jupiterman
@Strawberryblonde Well done for soldiering on! Do you have methods that help you cope at work?

Do you think your work could be making your T worse or better?
    S
Being a lone worker helps as I can control the sounds I'm exposed too and I suffer with bad anxiety/ocd so keeping myself occupied and mind off my new T level helped a a lot as I don't hear it when I'm occupied @Jupiterman
    brixenbrixen
I am gradualy off work since the onset one year ago - I just worked a little last year as I was constantly in psychiatry - slowly I am returing - I am independent journalist so I am lucky to can work from home - even the visits to events for networking and research lacks
All those years of college to get a good job and have a good life. Tinnitus hold my beer watch this.
    Jsm_Joestar
It is definetly hard. But its not needed to stay postive all the time. Just to be strong most of the time and make the best out of it
    EternalRinging
Exactly how I feel, after 6 years of studying hard, one day after my final capstone presentation, 3 months before starting my first full time job as an engineer, this "EEEEE" joined me forever.
    Ryan Scott
Alright so saltwater fishing is pretty much my life. But do ear plugs and earmuffs provide enough hearing protection due to wind noises?
    DeanD
When I go walking along a windy coast large peltor mufflers along with air plugs are usually suitabke enough, and I have sound reactive tinnitus
    S
Tbh not sure about wind against the ear muffs and wether itll be sufficient. Last time I went fishing it was windy and i didn't use protection against the wind, I was ignorant back in the day lol
    Marshall
    Earmuffs would be fine.
Another long noneventful weekend. At least the wind was blowing pretty good today and was able to get in a little 4-mile light jog.
