2020 US Presidential Election

After Trump is done, do you reckon a Republican is ever going to be President again? At this stage is looks like the USA will lean more left than ever before.
It depends, if Biden gets through the next four years he'd have to put on a fantastic show to beat Trump's record of high employment, high financial markets, peace, and no terrorism other than the Democrats' riots during the spring, summer and fall of 2020.

Although I voted for Hillary in 2016, I am glad that Trump won and carried us into the best shape this country had been in for years. With news of the forthcoming vaccine, the markets have come back better than ever. If this had happened a few weeks before the election, nothing would have prevented Trump from winning: not the Democrat's riots, or alleged voting fraud and election results tampering on the part of the Democrats.

Certainly. The game will continue on as usual. Blue team calls red team bad; red team calls blue team bad. Identity politics is the name of the game right now. Forget policy, it's all about: are you on my team or not? Choose your cult. Elected officials and media personalities create division among us, while they benefit together.

The arguments will always exist about whether or not a strong economy was created or inherited by each administration. Instead of working together to enact beneficial policy, politicians will go on media outlets and put on performative theater to rile up their respective bases and make it seem like the two major parties are worlds apart (they're not of course). Mainstream media will add fuel to the fire on both sides because well... it sells. And boom... the every-four-year political circus will come to town once again. And we'll be here to debate it - unless regenerative medicine allows us to debate it in person. (y)

Fortunately the American people are lazy and comfortable, so even tho people think our democracy is broken (it's not), no one will actually do something about their allegation.
Some people think that the Electoral College needs to be abolished, as it is seen as a system that disproportionately benefits less populous States, and thus not very democratic. Colorado is one of the few States that recently approved the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, and more States will probably follow.

Do you think this is a good development or do you think that the USA should retain the Electoral College?

You really have to stop the Trump is peaceful stuff. 90% of his foreign policy has been continuing Obama and Bush hawkish garbage. He vetoed a resolution to leave Yemen and every country we were in under Obama were still there. Accept it. Trump is a hawk.

The Electoral College is garbage, it should be abolished. There's no reason why someone in Wyoming deserves a bigger voice then someone in California. Good for Colorado.

Trump lost because of Trump. In fact, the GOP picked up a lot of Senate seats this election.

Romney would have beat Biden easily imo.
They also picked up some US House of Representatives seats that were supposed to lean Democratic.

I do agree if it was Romney vs Biden then Romney would have won easily but since recently Republicans have been getting a bad rap sheet I thought people may prefer to have a Democratic President over a Republican one due to recent controversies.

The Electoral College is good for Republicans but bad for Democrats. If it was by popular vote Democrats would have a better chance at winning at every election due to the population size in California and New York.

So what you are saying is is that there's more Democrats than Republicans.

Shouldn't that mean the Democrats should win then?

Where are the planes full of body bags with U.S. servicemen, that a real hawk President is usually responsible for?

If it were up to me, I'd cut off all dealings with the Middle East, but it's apparently not forthcoming in this lifetime. Biden will likely do the same, or similar, in the ME, as his predecessors.

Biden is a hawk also. All of our Presidents are war mongerers. It's very frustrating.

Trump had kept us involved in every country that we started in. He did the same thing Obama did, he'd take some troops away and out some back. His foreign policy is Obama 2.0.

If they decide to change to popular vote and there are more Democratic voters than Republican then they should win but if this happens they need to be able to look after their rural Republicans. If you look at the map most of the Democratic supporters are based in cities whereas more Republicans are based in rural. A moderate Democratic will be ok but once they go too far left then it's bad for the economy.

OK but the point should be that despite the relentless claims that he was the worst President we've ever had, Trump's foreign policy was not worse than Obama's. Couple that with the fact that the economy grew, unemployment went down, stateside terrorism was virtually non-existent, crime was very low, etc. I simply do not understand what motivated people to hate him so much. I admit I didn't vote for him in 2016, never liked him, but my assets grew during his Presidency, and he did do any harm to me. I was very pleased that he had the highest Black employment rate in history, even though this did not apply to me. I found nothing in Biden's platform that motivated me to vote for him, but in his (Biden's) case, there was a whole lot that did not appeal to me, not the least of which was the choice of VP.

I actually agree with you that the hatred of Trump is a little much in some ways. Anyone who thinks he's the worst ever must not remember Bush. That said, he definitely had a lot of policies that were seen as discriminatory and his policy agenda was quite conservative. If you are a conservative, that's great but if if you are not, you are not going to like that.

I felt Trump ran a very substanceless campaign. He didn't have a clear platform on some large issues like healthcare, education or climate change. Biden meanwhile has detailed and realistic plans for pretty much every issue and I agreed with him on most of them.

I disagree with your assessment on the economy. Medicare For All, free college, free preschool, infrastructure investments and the like would all be beneficial to the economy imo.

We have never had a far left Democrat in politics arguably forever. Unless you consider LBJ or FDR far left.

Trump was really an aberration to the general left right parameters of US politics.

So that dude shooting up that Walmart in El Paso wasn't an act of terrorisim?
OK but what was the reason for it? Was the guy just criminally insane, or a foreign terrorist with an agenda?

I agree about infrastructure investments. America needs to improve their broadband infrastructure and be able to provide most Americans with fibre to the home (FTTH). The current technology you have implemented, cable (DOCSIS), is limited to what it can do and many countries around the world have a better Fibre internet infrastructure. With Fibre it allows consumers to have a lower ping and be able to download and upload data quickly from one location to another.

Where I'm at only the first year of University is free but when I went they didn't have it at the time and our University fees are subsidised. My fees were around $24,000 for 3 years to get my degree whereas in USA your degree could be over $100,000. I agree that pre-school should be free. If it's free for state educated schools why not pre-school. I don't understand why parents have to pay for pre-school.

Could you explain more about how Medicare works? How much does someone pay for Medicare insurance? I remember @Luman was saying that when you earn more you have to pay more for Medicare because the premiums help pay for those that can't afford it. Also how much does medical insurance cost vs Medicare For All?

I was not talking about Medicare, I was discussing Obamacare, which is totally different.

I am now on Medicare, so I no longer have to pay for the crappy Obamacare that I was forced to take part in. Those who were lucky enough not to lose their private insurance and get put on Obamacare love to tell me, who was on it, how great it is. It would be fitting justice for these people to lose their insurance, and not have any option but to pay for a subpar plan that is the worst they've ever had. Then, and only then, will they change their opinion about Messiah Obama. I applaud Trump stopping it from being mandatory.

I voted for Obama, I got "chumped".

My bad. I thought Obamacare and Medicare were the same thing.

I was trying to find out why Republicans are against Medicare as I thought Obamacare was the same thing as Medicare.

So those people, even though they had private insurance, were forced to pay for Obamacare as well and when Trump got elected he did not force those people who had private insurance to pay for Obamacare?

I guess you can put Kamala Harris's ringtone on your phone. Why do I think @Luman will not be doing so? :) I won't be either for that matter, at least I hope not.
If the sound of her cackle was used to enhance the interrogation of violent criminals and terrorists, Amnesty International and human rights watchdog groups would step up and say it was too inhumane to foist upon them, no matter what kind of vital information they may have.

Not exactly. Private insurance became Obamacare, and unless you had insurance at work, you had to buy it. People in the lower income brackets get subsidized, or get it for free. I got laid off about 15 years ago, lost my employer insurance, and bought good private insurance for years, I believe it was Empire BC/BS, and once Obamacare started, they were dissolved.

I'm not 100% sure of what Trump did, I'll have to ask somebody, as far as the choice of opting out of insurance entirely, as people in their 20's often cannot afford it, and don't really need it.

On the Obamacare plan, the cost for the two of us was 20 thousand dollars a year, and that did not included co-pays and thousands in deductibles. This is how he was able to give it away to others for free, or at very reduced cost to the government.

Our Obamacare plan made us pay for children's dental. I think that most of all Obamacare now charge for this, to those who are unfortunate enough to have to pay for themselves. We do not have children, and it is impossible for us to do so, unless we adopt them. Son this is another example of Obama's generosity, with other people's money.

Medicare For All is basically a system where the government pays for all Medical care in the country and everyone is on this one plan. Under Bernie's proposal from the campaign, everyone would pay an income based premium of 4% of their income above $24,000. So if you have a family earning $23,000 they pay nothing, just like those on Medicaid today. If they earn $74,000, they'd pay $2,000 dollars. If they earn $250,000, they pay $9,000 dollars.

Now granted, this isn't the only funding mechanism for Bernie's plan but it's the main new one most individuals would pay.

Under this plan, all healthcare including PCP visits, specialists, dental, eye stuff, hospital care and anything else under the sun you can think of, is covered free at the point of service.

And also about the college thing, the government wouldn't be paying out $100,000 for anyone to go to school since only public colleges would be free and they tend to be cheaper.

That is not how the government gave it away to people. The subsidies are funded via taxes in the law. What you're describing was the laws regulations that made sure plans were comprehensive. Before the ACA, many were not.

The only problem with Obamacare is they under funded the subsidies for the plans. Joe Biden is going to fix that. Under his plan, you'd get a subsidy if you were still on Obamacare.

Certainly. The game will continue on as usual. Blue team calls red team bad; red team calls blue team bad. Identity politics is the name of the game right now. What game? You liberals think that the parties are different. Nothing is rigged, you say.

Always the hypocrites, you people.

It's become a joke.

I guess I don't know enough about your American system but I was under the impression that the Electoral College benefited the Republicans so they want the Popular Vote?

But, then Biden, who had small crowds show up throughout his campaign smashed records including the Electoral College. Lol.

Why do they want to change it?!? /s
