A Sentiment on Here That Annoys Me ("You Shouldn't Monitor Your Tinnitus")

This! I don't have to monitor my tinnitus. It's in my face (pardon the pun) all the time. It varies. When it's low, I can 'ignore' it for the most part. When it's screaming, it's painful, nauseating, and makes me feel completely out of control. Sort of hard to ignore.

@TiredOfT

Exactly TiredofT

I understand what you're talking about because I have variable tinintus. From: complete silence, mild, moderate, severe, and it can reach extreme severe levels. My tinnitus has been quite severe for the last 2 days and there's no way to ignore it. I had to take clonazepam to help cope and it's now reducing in severity. People that don't have variable tinnitus or severe tinnitus like yours, do not quite understand that it can reach severe levels that the tinnitus can't be ignored.

Have a word with your ENT doctor or GP and see if they will prescribe you clonazepam. It can be useful when the tinnitus is very severe but will only help some people. I was prescribed it in 2010. It can be an addictive drug if taken too often for this reason I don't and haven't had a problem with it.

Take care and best of luck
Michael

@Bassplayer has raised some interesting and true points and on the whole I agree with his suggestions.
Positivity is the way forward.

Michael

Positivity is just a word Mike (as you well know). In the end we have to do something about it. That's the hard bit.

What concerns me more is the following. Why do most people move on without any intervention from the medical profession or forums or alike?

Does the means sometimes justify the cause perhaps?

I honestly believe there is enough good advice out there to help those suffering with tinnitus. The hard bit is wanting to help oneself.

I agree with a lot of your points but a statement like this tells me that you don't know what it's like to live with severe tinnitus for years. Especially in combination with hyperacusis it can be very debiliating. We also have a lot of members on here who have had tinnitus for less than a year, a lot of new members move on relatively quickly once they're over the initial panic stage. The majority can habituate.

@Autumnly

You are exactly right Autumnly. @Bassplayer means well and a lot of what he says is true but I don't believe he understands what it's like to live with severe tinnitus since his tinnitus remains relatively low most or all of the time. If one has this type of tinnitus as many do outside of this forum they will find it difficult to understand when someone says, their tinnitus is loud and intrusive and this level is sustained to the point it cannot easily be ignored and it becomes very debilitating.

Nope, I can honestly say I was in a very dark place and moved on. I think Mike means well too, but isnt this forum about people getting better ?

Well I guess it's up to the mods now.

@Bassplayer The majority habituates but don't look down on the minority. Unfortunately, not everyone will be able to go back to a normal life. I'm all for supporting tinnitus sufferers but I also understand that there are people who are struggling greatly and that it's not their fault. Not everyone will get better to a point where they can go back to their former lives. These might be rare extreme cases but they exist. To every new member I'd recommend what you've said: give it time, don't monitor it, distract yourself.

lol... @Bassplayer There is a very large membership at Tinnitus Talk some 23000 and still growing. There are bound to be people that are having difficulty habituating. I see your point and you're quite right but negativity is part of the game here so welcome aboard we need positive people like you....:D

@Michael Leigh and @Bassplayer
Now I remember why you both did not get on before....
But you both agree on positivity....:beeranimation:

Well hopefully something always good comes out of battles! x

Alternatively they get sucked into believing there is no way out but your/ our way out. In the end it has to be their way out Michael.

I can say a couple of things here: I have severe tinnitus (stand on the side of the freeway and my tinnitus is louder).
I have tried medical intervention(benzos and the addiction was hell and it was the toughest battle I ever had, getting off them).

My tinnitus doesn't fade, go away and get lower in volume. I am stuck in the screaming tea kettle hell 24-7 and I take no meds either. I face it daily and I live my life and thrive.....

Habituation/coping is not easy at all and it takes a mindset and discipline to get there. It can take maybe 6 months or maybe much longer. Just because some seeks medical help, it will not always make things better. I had intrusive tinnitus when I was on the benzos and my volume never faded. I just felt horrible all day long, simple as that. I had no control of my life and I will never go back to that state of mind/life ever again. I am not at all advising to not get on benzos, that is your choice and I am just sharing my experience...

There are many ways one can help themselves with tinnitus, it all depends on what technique/tool that person uses and how disciplined they are. Things will not always work at first, that's why we try different approaches and hope to find a way to cope and live our lives.

I have bought almost all the promises, that been out there for 30 years and what has helped me the most is accepting, distracting and just moving forward.

My way of thinking is very different from others. I don't treat my tinnitus as the enemy, instead as a friend and it cannot and will not rattle me.

You have to treat your tinnitus with a positive mindset to move forward in life. Habituation is the door, and positivity is key!

Your brain will always make you monitor your tinnitus because your limbic system is hearing it as a threatening sound and asking your autonomic nervous system to fight, fright or flight. You can't not do it to some extent. This is the lost to research part of the psycho/physiological disease process that tinnitus presents. Its so much more than the sound itself.

For me my Bilateral Tinnitus is to sever due to Menieres and hearingloss.
It can no way be forgotten any minute of the day as my ears rage way off the scale and never let up .
My hearing aids have given me my life back and im a different person (Happy Bunny enjoying life)without them I struggle badly.

I wish my t was quiet enough to only hear with my fingers in my ears. I would gladly accept that level of noise and move on with no problem. Mine is BLASTING out of my left ear right now. Its the loudest thing I hear.

Fair play fishbone. Out of curiosity have you read about my experiences 6 years ago? I'd be very interested in your thoughts...

Also, why the name 'fishbone'? Isn't that something which gets stuck down peoples throat?

Didn't I read that you have mild T and that you have to listen for it in a library? If that's true then you should absolutely use that advice even though I know you're being sarcastic. What are you waiting for? Don't hold your breath for a cure because you may never see one, and then the jokes on you.

While you're waiting try and get your emotions under control and learn to tame the beast. Don't be a slave to T, make it your slave.

I new at this, but not thinking of T And monitor it is the best cure . Just what Michael mentioned about T and your emotions. But sometimes it just so difficult not to pay attention to the something that there 24/7 . This thing you have to be tuff like iron, not easy at all . But I can say as time go by it seen more manageable. There are bad/good days. Hopefully we all will get better days in the future. God blessings to all!

@Rajin

Consider getting a referral to see a Hearing Therapist or Audiologist, that specialises in the treatment and management of tinnitus. There are a variety of treatments that can help if available to you....

I agree @Bassplayer some people cannot be helped because they are looking for a complete cure for tinnitus, and anything else such as habituation is not acceptable which is unfortunate.

To take that one step forward, are we lookng forward to a complete cure for old age and death?

Well where would that get us all?

No, far better to make the best out of every day we wake up. Life is so special, best not waste it.

You and I Michael love music, I now realise how I didn't appreciate my youth and heath as much as I should have done

Tinnitus has taught me that.

Some of the people in this forum @Bassplayer not only have tinnitus to cope with but additional problems for life as you know is problematic. Add to this a negative mindset, that nothing except a cure for tinnitus will be acceptable and the support from like minded people; a platform is created for them to vent their frustrations. Forums and other social media sites are perfect places to blame the medical profession, their government etc for not finding it a cure. It is a wonderful feeling of solidarity one can get as they huddle around their computer and have a good moan and groan at the world.
