To all those who have tinnitus/hyperacusis and live in noisy places, have you thought about using active hearing protection? You don't have to block out all sound and miss out on what's going on around you.

I have Peltor active earmuffs and earplugs, and use them when I am in the city where there are noisy trucks, buses, cars, etc.

Peltor Shooters
32 dB reduction

Using the active ear protection I can:
  1. Walk around the city relaxed - no being on edge waiting for the next loud noise
  2. Hear everything normally
  3. But at the same time know that my ears are automatically protected
  4. Avoid overprotecting
Hell, I even use them at home when I'm doing the dishes for those occasions when I might clank some glasses together. I figure they'd be good around noisy kids too.

The disadvantages are that they're much more expensive than passive earmuffs, but for me it's easily worth it to be able to follow conversations and remain accustomed to normal, safe sounds.
