Tinnitus Since
05/2015
So I'm new, been visiting this site for a bit after getting Tinnitus, I got it several months ago. Hope you are all having a good day.

about myself,
I'm in school and developed this, it was rough being in class and trying to focus,
Was extremely stressful and had to drop out of classes then retry.
I'm taking Calculus now and Programming, Man, This is tough, but I'm trying. I need to finish school so I can get a good job and support me and my Girlfriend Ears exploding or not.

When i first got this, i was sitting in my room quietly working on my computer when all of a sudden, it started.
At first I thought it was a electronic power noise, like you would hear from a CRT monitor or TV, you know that faint high pitched sound that from old Glass tube monitors and TV's? it's like that. Or a light fixture that's going bad. The only other thing that accurately replicates what i hear is sitting at the master control room of a TV station surrounded by a room of Monitors, servers and all sorts of high frequency electronics.

I thought it was coming from my PC, eventually i unhooked everything in my room from the power and i still heard this noise, and realized it's coming from ME. i covered my ears and it was LOUDER. Panic ensued, i couldn't sleep for days, the pitch was so intense i was crying my eyes out, it was unbearable. the only relief i had was just standing in the shower. or being outside and just the "outside" noise, background of cars, wind open air helped. so i set up a tent in my back yard out of desperation.

Then that stopped helping. it got louder. and powered right though any background noise.

Eventually my parents took me to the ER, because no one knew what was wrong, it was so intense.
I had vertigo so they gave me antivert, which put me to sleep, and did MRI.
nothing, brains fine. etc. i was depressed, on and off, i would have better days than others. and i had random vertigo. but didn't last more than a few hours.

since then i've seen two ENT's. looked at me and said i might have TMJ, i got a second opinion from another ENT and he wanted to put me on Anti Depressants. I didn't bother starting the anti depressants because I'm weary and or afraid of implications in the future for job prospects or being hooked on them.

I don't do narcotics or marijuana, i drink beer with meals occasionally. and I love my espresso.
I stopped Coffee and caffiene like some suggested for a month. No change so i went back to it.

about my Tinnitus, i sometimes feel intense pressure in my ear. or head, like if its in a VICE getting cranked tighter. cant explain it. in the morning, when i wake up sometimes, my hearing is "low volume" when i get up from bed, i sometimes hear a faint deep base "womp, womp wimp" like its my heart beat, and slowly my hearing comes back and the Tinnitus comes in slowly.

sometimes when i am physically active it happens too.

I saw a TMJ /dentist guy and he was unsure , i told him sometimes when i take a bite into a sandwich, i feel fatigue or lose strenth in my chewing ability. he wanted me to get screened for MS before anything else.. so he had me do physical therapy for my neck/jaw muscles. it was doing very little. but the therapist was telling me i have ALOT of tension on those muscles, neck, head jaw tension.

ALL OF A SUDDEN out of NOWHERE. HYPERACTIVE. I thought things were bad, but WOW. This is how i discovered what H is. EVERYTHING hurt. breathing , was too loud, anything, constant RINGING and sensitivity, it was absolutely impossible i was incapacitated, first day of the semester i had to go outside and cry, i could go on. I wanted to eat a bullet, it was indescribable suffering. I had no idea what to do, i just sat in my room and cried.

saw someone else.
i saw a bonofide TMJ specialist, i told him about the ringing being the most bothersome issue, instance of vertigo, issue with chewing, and that when i open my mouth all the way my jaw shifts a little bit to the side. and onetime chewing cereal my right ear felt a loud Bone impact noise that scared the shit out of me because it sounded like a huge tree branch falling to the ground "THUMP!" but in my head. the TMJ specialist, whom also does surgery for it nodded and said all that sounds along the lines of what i have, but cannot guarentee the ringing to go away if he treats it.. he gave me a mouth splint in he meantime, had me to an MRI and CT scan of the joint. I'm waiting to see him again to see his thoughts. So i asked him if there was something i can take for muscle tension.

HE said SURE! and put me on 5mg of Cyclobenzaprine, aka Flexaril a muscle relaxant.
Take it at bedtime.
HOLY SH1T is all i can say.
Hyperacusis was GONE. and it lowered my Tinnitus to a level i can ignore, it's in the background but i have to look for it and focus on it. But can hear it at night at bedtime, but i got a little homedics waterfountain by the bed for some nose to help and its been okay since. I been putting a mouth splint along side the muscle relaxer. Been on the thing for a month, no side affects other than you wake up with dry mouth in the morning. it's a desert in there. Drink more water and its okay.

Anyway, my ringing came back a little higher today, but no where where it was before hopefully its a temporary spike. I'm mightove forgotton to say a few things but i'll post them as i remember and my results from the ENT i see in a few weeks.. Hopefully my experience can help someone.

OH yeah, If i move my mouth/jaw the ringing changes somewhat, if i TENSE my jaw muscles and the muscle group just under my chin, the Tinnitis is VERY LOUD. has anyone else had similar? Anyone had tinnitus caused by TMJ? the TMJ specialist speculates that the tension is putting pressure in my Ear area since the joint is right by the ear.

Welcome. If your T seems to follow the heart beat, you may have pulsatile T. @Karen may be able to give you some advice. Hang in there and try to read the success stories so you know things will improve over time for most people.

Hey Roe I think my Tinnitus started after a root canal the next day I could barely open my jaw and the ringing in my ear was very loud. I since the onset of T have had TMJ surgery .....the jaw feels much better but the ringing has stayed. The only thing that has helped me has been to let time pass and as time passes your brain just gets use to it and you slowly get your life back. I still have very bad days but I have good ones too so I just try to stay positive.
Hang in there man

Good morning, I have some updates.

I ran out of my prescription, and could not get a refill of cyclobenzaprine. [flexeril]

Tinnitus came back with a vengeance.

got worse each day. i was losing my mind.

I got my prescription refilled and it was not as bad. I can sleep with a Marpac DOHM white noise machine.

Since im also trying a splint for TMJ, i wanted to try ALEVE. I took a single 220mg last night.

I woke up this morning, and the tinnitus was virtually gone! i was LOOKING for it. Locked my self in a silent bathroom. I could not FIND it.

I decided to try chewing a cracker, (tmj care instructions say dont chew hard foods, this was a cuban cracker, so its significantly thicker and crunchier.)

The tinnitus popped up. So i stopped and started having a soft breakfast.

Is this TMJ causing my tinnitus? causing inflammation and pressure on my inner ear?
I'm really happy that its this low, I can actually get school work done like this.

Also. my ears feels stuffy, but there's no obstruction. I get sudden high pitches that come out of nowhere and go quickly. stuffiness alternates ears. So does ringing intensity with no ryme or reason from ear to ear. To clarify, one hour, my right ear will be really bothersome with pressure, or louder ringing, then switch ears a couple hours later or sometimes moments.

Oh, i wanted to correct the first post, but i dont know how to edit that older post. not "HYPERACTIVE" but "Hyperacusis" is what i meant.

Good on you that you have something which helps your T. If your T is indeed TMJ related, you should search T with that and read up the info to see if others' insights and experiences can help you. Good luck and God bless.

Alright, its been a couple days now back on my Cyclobenzaprine, and its back to its low state that it was before.
The ringing is not longer a high pitch tone, but has subsided into a distant buzzing. If i chew hard food, and really aggravate my jaw muscles. it'll get worse. If i get stressed, tense, or freak out about lets say a huge major inportant test. it gets worse. Loudness and intensity.

so it appears Cyclobenzaprine helps. Since I'm not crying and absolutely losing my mind in distress and misery. Right now I'm okay. the noise is there and i accept that its there, and I'm gonna go for a walk in the park and enjoy the green foliage and the blue sky. Should I move this thread and updates somewhere where more people can see it?

My wish is that someone reads this and gets similar help, I wish this on nobody and no one should feel this way.

Hi @RoeB ,

I have TMJ induced Tinnitus and Flexeril really helped me too. It calms the nerves in your jaw so the inflammation dies down. However, my dentist says that Flexeril isn't a lifetime cure. You must find the root of the problem. For me, it's a misaligned jaw. I've been going to physical therapy for my jaw, and I can open my jaw without it clicking and the T has died down!

However, I still freak out over noises and when I stress, it shoots way up. I take ibuprofen, goes down. If I'm completely calm, the noise goes away. It takes time.

Hang in there!

RoeB, Kara77--

Isn't ibuprofen considered to be extermely bad if you have T? My ENT gave me a list of things to avoid and ibuprofen was included. I am struggling to cope with this horrific condition (initial issues began about 3 weeks ago, incessant ear humming began ten days ago.).

Hi @James69

In large quantities yes, I took ibuprofen for only two weeks at a time (what my doctor told me to do) just to see if it will help the inflammation, and it did! However, physical/massage therapy worked the best to lower down the T.

I don't take ibuprofen anymore, rather curcumin which is an alternative medicine that helps decrease inflammation in the body.
