How and Why Did You Choose Your Username?

The science of this condition, though interesting, does not touch me on a personal level.
But the arts - 'WOW' - can reduce me to tears of warmth, gratitude, and encouragement through insight.
Our content says so much about us.

I have always gravitated to the threads that lift my mood, even if only in a small way. Tinnitus can drain us most days, so coming here and seeking out some positive interaction and maybe even a laugh or two, with others who understand, is what works for me.

I try to remain optimistic that a cure, or perhaps even some relief, is coming. I admire the members here who work so hard to bring us hope and reassurance that help is indeed on the way.

That would be fantastic of course, but perhaps because of the hardship of my infancy and childhood, I survived by being realistic and expecting very little.
Obsessing on the research angle can seem like 'cliff-hanging.'
I have tended to spend my time learning how to "get through tomorrow" and develop coping skills.
I guess it is inevitable that we have as diverse an attitude as our prehistory provides.
Strange business - life??

(Think I'd better go to bed Ems,
I've got an idea that I've started talking 'cobblers' again.....!)x

Life ~ Strange business, indeed. Coping skills such as meditation and yoga and a one day at a time mantra have been crucial for me.

My name is fairly straight forward. Sgt for sergeant, my rank when I left the army. Dubie a nickname given to me as people seem to have trouble with my last name...
Is your tinnitus a consequence of your military career??

I chose the name JohnFox cuz my first name actually is John. The Fox was chosen because of the airplane that I own. All airplanes have a series of letters and numbers on their side that the pilot uses to identify themselves when talking to airspace controllers on the radio, etc. The last figure on my plane is the letter F, and when you speak the letter F over the radio you say the word "Foxtrot", so the controller then knows that you are meaning the letter F, instead of say, the letter "S" which has a similar sound. BTW, S would be spoken as.. Sierra. Anyway, sometimes we pilots will abbreviate Foxtrot and just say "Fox", and viola! JohnFox. ;)

Yes I do. My wife and I enjoy flying to Idaho and camping out at remote air strips. BTW, when I am in my plane with the noise/drone of the engine and wearing my head set, and concentrating on flying, it is one time that I don't notice my Tinnitus at all. Wish I could do it all day long.

Over 20 years ago, back when I had to choose a username for my first e-mail account, "bauer" is the first thing that had popped into my mind. I guess it had to do with me walking past an "Eddie Bauer" store earlier that day.

I've read so many Philip K. Dick novels and stories that I think it has warped my view of reality.

"Skinjob" is a term from the film Blade Runner, based on PKD's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I sometimes have the unsettling feeling that none of my childhood memories are real. I felt like I was in heaven the first 15 years of my life. Life is so different now. Sometimes I wonder whether any of it really happened.

Also, tinnitus seems to be a symptom of my impending planned obsolescence. And my left hand keeps involuntarily cramping into a claw for some reason.

John - can I ask you - did the noise of your flying give you tinnitus would you say?

No. We don't really know what caused it. It could have something to do with a serious motorcycle accident I was in 4 months prior to the onset of Tinnitus. Regardless, my hearing loss in my right ear and the Tinnitus hit me very suddenly while I was sleeping. I simply woke up in the middle of the night with my ear feeling all plugged up and this awful noise in my head, and then realizing that I was completely deaf in my right ear. It came on more like a stroke or something. It was not noise induced. It's been almost five months now since that event and it's still the same.

Thanks for coming back John.
Oh dear - I'm so sorry buddy - it's such a curse.
I woke up to my noise one morning in June 2014.
(see my video below.)
Very best wishes

Dave, I just watched the video. Really sorry you felt you had to step away from Jazz. This scourge has different effects on all of us, but one things for certain, our lives will be different now. I too am musical and play the guitar and harmonica. After my hearing loss and Tinnitus I wouldn't even look at the guitar. I finally decided to try it again and see how things went. I can only now tolerate soft finger picking pieces. No strumming,...I just can't take it. Fortunately I only play for self entertainment by myself. It must be truly a great loss for a person such as yourself. Really feel for you. My coping seems to be getting better, although I still have my bad days where I really wonder about things. There are certain environments where it doesn't bother me much at all, so I look forward to those times where I can get a temporary period of relief. Without that, It would be hard to go on. Blessings to you, and really glad you posted the video. Cheers....John

Enhanced your reality, not warped... in my humble opinion.
Massage your left arm and hand, use a hard ball if necessary.

Skinjob, you appear to have the gift of writing, have you ever tried this or other art forms? Your writing has got a nice style.

Thank you, that's a very kind compliment. Like a lot of people here, I used to be a musician and songwriter. Also a lyricist, though my old lyrics embarrass me now -- if I ever do music again I would want to collaborate with someone who is better at writing words than me. I was starting to finally reach a level of proficiency and quality and wanted to turn professional when I had to stop because of hyperacusis. My influences were Eno, Tony Banks (I loved the harmonic complexity in a popular music context in his 70s work and feel he isn't given enough credit), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bowie, Robert Wyatt, the Beach Boys, Andy Partridge, 70s era Elton.

I can craft a sentence or a paragraph after I've had my coffee in the morning. However, I can't tell stories, and I want to. I have tried and the results were not good. I keep trying.

The claw hand was a Blade Runner reference. Before he died, the character Roy Batty's hand kept seizing up into a claw. Tinnitus to me seems like a symptom of a broken Replicant not long for the world.
