If Salt and Sugar Make Tinnitus Spike...

I think that if we already HAVE tinnitus, then some foods can possibly make it spike, and abstaining from those foods can KEEP it from spiking.

Anything that would actually LESSEN it could be considered an effective treatment!

And oh, how I DO wish there was something consistent like THAT! :)

Why we haven't found a substance that instead of spiking...eases the "sound" of tinnitus?
yeah I have thought about this also. There are so many things that can spike our T. I have read many, many post regarding this. But I never read something that lowers it. If we're able to spike it you would think we can lower it . I mean even just yawning spikes it

well yes its like... the ying and yang law, there must be something to lowers it.

I highly question that salt or sugar or any food can alter T. Unless it has a direct effect on the nervous system like for instance alcohol.

Anything over a tiny amount of salt in a day will cause my T to screech the next day. Others find that salt doesn't affect them. Sugar doesn't affect mine at all. Spices do, as does lemon juice and a few other things (vibration makes it loud!)

It's thought that T is a symptom, not the illness itself. So it makes sense that it differs and what affects it differs - from person to person. If my pain was caused by toothache, ice cream may make it worse but the chap with tonsillitis pain may find that ice cream reduces his, albeit temporarily.

Salt & Sugars may very well lead to a spike, but you cannot blame the salt or sugar. What you need to understand is what happens inside your immune system when you consume these things. Too much salt is a no no. Can possibly increase heart rate, blood pressure, damage vessels etc etc. Sugar is a TOXIN PERIOD! Not to say stop salt and sugar intake. Just be practical. Educate yourself on both of these before jumping to conclusions. Sugar effects your immune system by forcing it to concentrate on destroying this toxin, therefore leaving outer problem areas alone while they wake war with the sweet stuff. Salt is a necessity. Too much is bad. Iodized salt, containing trace amounts of Iodine is beneficial to your health. Iodine is useful to help fight off toxins. Too much is bad. The sweeteners used in many processed foods are horrible. High Glucose Fructose being the main one today. Cheap to manufacture, highly sweet so they need less to make a product taste sweet, and super toxic. Hard on the system. Anything that is hard on the system is bound to make other symptoms of whatever we suffer from increase.

My only suggestion about salt, sugar and other things we consume is, we need to make sure our digestive system is in the best working order possible. Salt is widely used everywhere in foodstuffs simply because it makes food taste better, and you will continue to buy this food and ingest it. Your sodium intake really is your responsibility. Sodium amounts for recommended daily intake are listed on pretty much everything now, or listed somewhere on a chart in a restaurant etc. You see this on most food items you buy at any market, store, etc. A little chart is there. plain as day, written small but if you focus you can read it, that tells you what percent of what item you are ingesting in a recommended daily intake level. If you eat 12 potato chips of X brand = 1 serving = 49% of recommended sodium intake.

Sugar has no recommended maximum daily intake level. It will simply tell you how much sugar is in it eg. 14g sugar per serving. Want to know why sugar is not listed under a recommended daily intake level? Because its a TOXIN. There is no recommended maximum intake level for toxins. Then we get to the part of, how toxic? Well it depends on the sweetener. Many different forms of sugar. When you think of sugar, you think of the teaspoon of the white granular sweet sugar you dump in your coffee. That sugar is a tad less toxic, or less harder to break down than other types of modified sugars we use now. High Glucose Fructose. Sounds innocent enough. On a molecular scale, our body needs to go to WAR with this stuff, yet it's in everything. Why? Because it's so super cheap to manufacture, and so super sweet that less is needed, and hence more profitable for the company selling the goods. Ah OK well Mike, I use artificial sweeteners so I'm perfectly safe!! WRONG! Research in depth what artificial sweetener you are consuming. Where does it come from? What does it do to our immune and digestive systems? Answer?? WAY WAY worse than sugar!!

So back I go to keeping your digestive system healthy. Not only are you what you eat, but you also are what you allow to take place in the digestive system. So lets say for a moment you eat decent veggies often. Awesome!! Good nutrition, great fiber. Feels good knowing you are eating better. You try n cook with less salt etc. Super!! If the food still tastes decent than your awesome. Then you grab some potato chips once in awhile. Grab a snack at a cafeteria with your coffee at lunch that is barely nutritious enough to be called food. Hey, it's a ham sandwich on whole wheat bread with cheese!! Cant be all that bad right?? WRONG! The bread is processed. The ham preserved til 2099, the cheese processed, etc etc. So are you REALLY eating well? Probably not and neither am I. Just too hard too with all the processed and ready made stuff today. Inside our digestive track are billions and billions of good bacteria. These little critters are what break down what we eat and turn them into ENERGY! So after say, 10 years of eating processed foods here and there, and trying to eat better here and there, we thing we are probably in A OK shape. Nope! There are also billions and billions of BAD bacteria that grow in our system. In what is known as a healthy digestive track, the good should outnumber the bad by at least 2 to 1. We let it go past this and we slowly become ill. Headaches, irritable, catch more colds, sore joints, cranky, feeling yukky. But its a slow progression so much ignored. Well hey Mike, I eat a lot of yogurt and everyone knows yogurt is full of the good bacteria! TRUE! However its also full of sweeteners. One cancels out the other!!

Trying to maintain your digestive track is so important it isn't even funny. Myself I use a Probiotic supplement. I swear by them and so do all my family and friends. My skin looks better, I feel better, enough energy to get thru just about any kind of day, cannot remember the last time I caught a cold........? My immune system must be working somewhat better. Placebo effect?? NOPE! Not a chance. I know what this does, and know when I have stopped in the past taking these probiotics, how I felt. Thats me. Thats my story and my theory on how to better cope with what ever life throws at you. It will not help Tinnitus at all in my opinion. But staying balanced should make it easier to deal with this and sure does for me!! Too hard to keep the good bacteria going with the foods today. They need a little help??

I am Mike and I am completely deaf now. My Tinnitus is so loud its impossible to describe! I can cope, as long as I feel well! Good luck everyone!

Mike can I ask please what Probiotic supplement do you use? I have been making my own kefir but it just makes me ill. Even 1tsp and I feel so sick.

Thanks
Minny

Salt and sugar don't seem to affect T for me, alcohol seems too reduce it.

Noise like music or tv, driving, traffic noise, socialising, restaurants etc all make the t worse for me.

Hi Minny.

There are many different manufacturers of probiotics. The one I use is fairly cheap at a cost of $15.00 per month. One capsule a day so it works out to 50 cents a day. This is the one I purchase at WalMart. It has 8 strains of the good bacteria with a minimum of 30 billion of the good guys in total. It actually has over 75 Billion good guys at date of manufacture but since they are a live bacteria, many die off just sitting there. So they guarantee 30 Billion will still be there on expiry date. You may not get these where you live but look for something similar. You are what you eat and how well you digest. Can't complain for 50 cents a day!!

Salt, sugar, Sunday afternoon's and the wind blowing out of the NW at 13 mph is generally why T spikes. To be clear however, some put more stock in moon alignment. Together however they oddly make T go down. ;)
PS: you rock Mike and set the bar high for us.:beeranimation:

well yes its like... the ying and yang law, there must be something to lowers it.
Don't believe the ying and yang rule is universal. May not apply to T and doesn't apply to aging either. They...the ubiquitous collective they haven't figured out a way to reverse aging either 'yet'...but they will.

There are substances which reduce T for some people. Phenergan and alcohol reduce my sounds considerably for many hours. Other people report that benzos have the same effect for them. Unfortunately the noises always come back - the same way spikes caused by sugar or salt virtually always come down.

unfortunately when it comes to getting older / deterioration of the body - it's linear in one direction. so yin yang doesnt work here.

That said - I find a gin martini gets rid of my tinnitus 95% of the time. the 3rd one gets rid of it the other 5%. For some reason gin works better than other alcohol. Maybe I'll experiment with other 80 proof clear liquors, for science.

Excellent smithers. We finally found a cure!
Happy days are here again.:thankyousign:

I'm wondering if this info I found on Migraine could work for my Tinnitus. Seems a migraine can happen when there is too, much salt in a diet. One remedy to counteract the salt, balance things out, is Potassium Citrate powder taken only a tiny bit, 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. I am going to try it for my migraines because I had a bad one last evening, plus the fact my tinnitus is off the chart since 2 days ago.

Things I've been eating and adding seasalt to was especially heavy right before 6pm yesterday when I got the migraine. Worth a look, maybe? I'm getting some powder today. and I'll come back in here and leave another message, or edit.

I wanted to add something on potassium citrate so that people trying this will be aware (according to this article anyway) and take precautions trying a supplemental for of Potassium. https://www.dietvsdisease.org/potas...in-english/#Potassium_Citrate_Recommendations

I will have to read more of the thread to see if anyone has tried it for their tinnitus, Denise

For whatever reason small noises reduces my T... Which makes it really weird and confusing. Coffee makes it go haywire

How does anyone tell whether their T spikes due to food or just its fluctuations? Unless your T's reaction to food is spontaneous, it's hard to say it's food related.

I take potassium citrate because in combination with lower sodium it will decrease kidney stone formation (calcium oxalate stones). It doesn't seem to have much effect on my tinnitus. Most of the OTC potassium citrate supplements are really small dosage compared to what they prescribe for people that form a lot of kidney stones, but you are right, too much potassium can be a bad thing.

All my favourites, Biscuits, Bananas, Christmas fruit cake, pasta sauce, gravy, chips with chicken salt, all make my tinnitus spike, they even make my left inner ear feel fuller and puffy sounding.

Bananas really get me even though they are meant to be good for tinnitus and ear health. It might be the Potassium or fructose I have been told. Anyway it all just adds to my nightmare of Tinnitus and Mild Hyperacusis.
