Cause of Tinnitus

Hello All,

Some background:

Age: 33
First T experience age: 24
Tinnitus: High Frequency +- 5000hz
Other highlilghts:
  • Had braces at the age of 15, terrible overbite and uneven tooth layout
  • 4 permanent teeth removed at the age of 15, 4 wisdoms at the age of 23
  • One moderate to major car accident - no broken bones just neck and shoulder trauma
  • Suffered severely with sinus attacks as a kid, would wake up and sneeze over 100 times
Just before the onset of T, I complained to my GP about hearing loss in my right ear.
He checked it and said all was OK, the problem persisted, went to an ENT and he said the same.
His hypothesis was - as some point I injured my ear drum (with a cotton bud) and as the membrane healed it stiffened up causing the ear drum not to vibrate the way it should and the result was minor hearing loss. At that point I was fed up and learned to live with it. Not long after that the dreadful T started in my right ear, same ear with hearing loss. I was absolutely freaked out and felt like jumping of a bridge. Went to the DOC, ENT etc and they all said everything was ok and that I will have to live with the ringing. One doctor put me on 120mg of prednisone per day over 5 days along with texa and an antibiotic. The ringing subsided and the hearing improved but it was never completely fixed. As usual there was a financial struggle and I just couldnt afford to take the matter further so I learned to live with it. Every year, once a year I would have to go on steroids and antibiotics and my ear felt "ok".

In 2010 I had a bad episode, fullness in the same ear, hearing was down to 40% and the tinnitus was terrible then the last draw was vertigo :( - I was taken to hospital, another ENT said I had lots of fluid in my middle ear due to ETD and the vertigo was caused because of an inner ear Herpes Virus. I went on Prednisone, Augmenten both orally and drips as well as Zelitrex. Within 3 days my ear started to clear up, my balance was restored and I was doing ok but I was frustrated as I still had terrible fullness and tinnitus. So I got a netipot and decided to push the saline solution up my ET, the left ear cleared but the solution remained in the right ear, full force... My wife was just taking me back to the hospital and as I approached casualty my ear cleared, the ringing subsided and I felt good. We we made a turn and went home, continued with steroids, nasal spray and allecet and I was fine in about a week. But the tinnitus would always worsen as my ears cleared, pushing a bit of saline solution through my ET always helped but I was always scared to do this so eventually I stopped and dealt with the T.

Current Experience:

Just over 2 months ago I picked up the flu virus, ETD was terrible and pressure was not been equalised. No fluid build up. Once again right ear. ENT recommended a GROMMET... my gut said NO but my head was playing games with me after a few re-schedules I got the grommet done... WORST MOVE EVER. After the grommet insertion I started to get different pitches of T as well hyperacusis and all sorts of other noises like "fans" blowing in my ear. Not to mention terrible autophony :( After 6 weeks I decided to remove the grommet as I also somehow contracted glandular fever :( Its now been 3 weeks since the removal and the T is terrible and intrusive. My hearing is dulled in my right ear and I now have severe anxiety and stress. According to the ENT the first layer of skin has formed over the hole, he says it now needs to thicken up. He has asked me to give it time to heal, once healed he is confident my T will reduce to what I was used too... I just pray this is the case, this is driving me nuts and has taken over my life.

I am very close to going back to my old method of pushing the saline solution up my ET but I am worried I may rupture the healing tissue. So I have decided to give it a little more time. Once the ear drum has completely healed I will used the neti pot, thats the only thing that seems to make the T subside.

At this point my ET in my right ear works but my ear makes this sticky noise as it clears, my ear drum is badly retracted as the hole is healing. My left ear clears with one crisp click. I am am sick and tired of meds and even natural remedies. I am now on Ginko Biloba and Omega 3. I take one texa a day. I have mild hypertension 140/100, I take prexum plus for this and Zuvamor for cholestrol. I dont smoke, drink, club etc... Every now and then I take Brazepam 6mg - benzodiazepine. Helps me relax.

Could I be missing something?

I have just read your story and can see you have been through a lot and also lots of infections and dizzy spells.
I know you had a bad time with gromits.
Your ear needs time to heel and inflamation settle and then hope your tinnitus settles and hearing loss.
You need a hearing test after as any hearing loss can cause tinnitus and scar tissue also.
Your tinnitus will settle down and how you cope with the sound and emotional reaction will settle also but if your emotions or low mood becomes a problem their is help for it with medication and talking therapy and keep an eye on any sinus problems also.
Have a read of the positive stories too.
Keep posting for support....lots of love glynis

Sorry to hear that, hopefully it will settle back down. Regarding the q tip, does that mean you ruptured your ear drum at some point? If so wouldn't that be painful?

Hi Sam,

No did not rupture my ear drum.
To be honest I never ever really experienced pain.
The only incision ever made was the grommet.

Thanks,
V

Thank you, I am trying to remain positive. Its difficult.
I am a data/business analyst by proffesion and a motor mechanic by passion.
Last two months I have done nothing but focus on this ear.
The doc prescribed mood stabilising meds, Urbanol and Tofrinil...
It stabilised my mood, down low stable  so I stopped that nonsene.
Left me with a lump in my throat and I wanted to cry like a baby.

Tinnitis can make us emotional and nothing wrong with a good cry and our bodies natural response and a good emotional release.....lots of love glynis

Update:

Got a third opinion (ENT) and he says I should never have had the grommet done for ETD especially since I have T.
Apparently I should have tried ET dialation as a first option. Nonethless I am patiently waiting for the hole to heal completely, its now 6 weeks. My T is so erratic during the healing process its crazy, in the last 6 weeks (since grommet removal) I have had peaceful days with low T but and on other days extremely intrusive T. I would say a 30/70 mix of good/bad however the good seems to be taking over the bad. He advised me to take control of my emotions and "brain". The more I give the T importance the more my brain will hold on to it. Lots of things are easier said than done.

Update:

I have to come to realise that almost NOBODY understands T, all we know is that its a symptom. And I am talking about chronic T. Nonetheless, I got my MRi done yesterday, awaiting results. The hole in my right ear from the grommet has healed but a few days ago I got the flu :( my T has spiked again and I dont know whether its because if the flu or the ear drum healing. Even tho the "hole" is closed the eardrum could still be completing the healing process. I now have mild fullness and numbness in my right ear as well as dulled hearing and spiked T. NO nasal spray seems to work. The last one I used is Nasonex, induces an irritating feeling to continuly have to clear my ears and that in turn makes my jaws extremely sore...

Oh well ... Lets try to be positive ...

Update:

MRi is clear, brain / cochlear / facial / vestibular nervers are intact.
A little irritated that the MRi did not include the ossicles and middle ear.
Looking at getting that done soon.

In the meantime based on my symptoms my GP ordered the following:

Option 1 - 3 days intravenous medication:
- Rocephin 2000mg
- Betanoid 4mg
- Xefo 8mg

The above is to treat the flu and any bacterial infection.

Option 2 - If the symptoms have not improved my ENT has prescribed:
- Zelitrex 1000mg 3 x day for 5 days
- Betanoid 2mg 1 daily for 5 days
- Aldectone 1mg 1 daily for 1 month
- Sibelium 1mg 1 daily for 1 month

The above is for a viral infection, sibelium is apparently for anxiety and stress.

Not comfortable with the ENT option :( Hopefully option 1 sorts me out and the T subsides as well as my hearing in the right ear improve.

Update:

Really regret doing the grommet, anyway I cant continue living with that feeling of regret. Got even more sick after "Option 1" above and I was advised to complete "Option 2" without half the dose of betanoid. Went through a terrible spell of weakness, trembling, stress and anxiety. Bloods were fine, mild vitamin D deficiency, cholestrol is 6.6 which I'm working on. Sleeplessness :(

My doctor now wants to put me on Cilift (similar to Prozac) and Urbanol. I refused. I need to get myself out of this vicious cycle of stress and anxiety which definitely making my T terrible.

The ear which had the grommet, as mentioned above the hole is closed however according to the ENT the healing process is not complete. Have to give that more time. I still have a feeling of fullness and dulled hearing and the anxiety and stress makes it worse :(

Trying to be positive... it's not easy but I it can be done. Just want my life (strength / energy / positive person I was) back... Even with the T...

:);)

Update:

Hope these updates dont become too cumbersome, I find that a lot of people quickly post their problems and almost never post the solution. That is frustrating.

Lets start:

1. Tinnitus - still has its highs and lows, as mentioned it has become bilateral since the surgery. I cannot create a link between the inconsistencies or loudness of the T. For example I cannot tell you that a healthy diet makes my T better or that excessive sugar/salt/coffee etc. make it worse. What I can tell you is that exercise makes it worse, but there is a calm after the storm. So to give you a meaningless indication, before exercise T = 5/10, during exercise T= 8/10 (this is extremely intrusive) the next day T = 3/10... Once again this is not a norm. And when I talk exercise I mean CARDIO to a moderate point +-155bpm for 30 minutes. I cannot also find a link between blood pressure and T, my BP before the grommet was constantly moderate (150+/90+) and my T was actually not as bad. I now have an unexplained drop in BP (110+/70+) and my T actually feels worse. Overall I feel worse.

To sum up, I am starting to feel better but the improvements are slow and frustrating. I am now only taking Ashwaghanda and Probiotics. Aldactone seems to help my geographic tongue but as soon as I stop it the geographic tongue returns...

Many specialists are saying STRESS STRESS STRESS and a vicious cycle... mild adrenal fatigue and an imbalance in hormones etc... Tired, very tired...

But lets keep swimming :)

Hi,

Getting there slowly.
This whole grommet, medication etc... has brought me to a point of post surgery depression. Tinnitus is still intrusive, however I do have a better day or two.

Will update in more detail shortly.
