I have played guitar since I was 14 years old, many years of loud music, shooting guns without ear protection as a young adult, etc. I had my hearing tested back in 2002 and was told that I had some slight hearing loss on really high pitched stuff. Tinnitus was starting to become evident at that time, but it was just a background high pitch, and not all that noticeable unless trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. Every now and then it would be a little more noticeable, but for a very short amount of time, or maybe just in one ear for 10-15 minutes and then would disappear.

That has pretty much been the level that I suffered from, barely perceptible most of the time but always there.

I received the J&J COVID-19 vaccine on 3/24/21, and my ears have not stopped ringing since. Much louder than I have every experienced. Started hours after getting the vaccine. I am hoping that the level of the ringing will subside at some point...(

So sorry, hoping that it will go back to a quieter level for you. Mine was also very mild before my acoustic trauma 6 months ago.

Health and healing,
twa

Dave111, you may be right, I was on the fence with getting the vaccine. I do get yearly flu vaccines, never had it affect my tinnitus.

twa, I am sorry to learn of your acoustic trauma, I hope that you get some relief...

I got my tinnitus too after the J & J vaccine.

Are you any better?

Have you heard of any helpful information?

I'm really searching for answers and help. Thank you.

It has not gotten any better, possibly a little worse. I am at 17 days since the vaccine, no relief in sight. I guess I will have to contact my doctor and report my issues, get a physical, blood work, see an ENT. I have not tried any treatments, yet.

If I remember correctly from the J&J trial, everyone but one person who developed tinnitus from the vaccine had it resolve within 6 months.

To add to that, I think the person who had not yet had it resolve in six months had sudden hearing loss. The onset was a month after vaccination, so it is difficult to know for certain whether the two events were linked. But they had recovered some hearing and it's possible they could recover more or have their tinnitus lessen. I know for me after the onset of SSHL and treatments, my doctors said some improvement was possible over the course of a year.

@ZoomDweebie, I'm on day 65 of this tinnitus and my story is much like yours. See my posts. I got the vaccine for 2 reasons, even though I was set against it. My husband got cancer and I work in Healthcare. So, eventually I would probably need it to keep working and support my husband. I have seen improvement from the first couple of weeks. It's really scary and you think life is over. But then one day you'll get a brief period where it's not torturing you. Gradually you'll get a day of that and so on. I'm up to about 4 to 5 good days in a row. If what you said was true that it subsides in 6 months, then we know there's a positive end in sight!

This support group is great. Stay strong and please report your progress. It definitely gives me and others hope! Saying a prayer for you.

Sincerely,
Mary

Pretty much the same story with me. My ringing prior to the vaccine was so low volume that I thought it was normal LOL! In fact I didn't know what tinnitus was until I googled ringing in the ears the day after I got the shot. Mine is very loud and it's extremely difficult to sleep and I'm going into my fourth week.

My second shot is scheduled for this Friday, and that's a very BIG NO!

I've had tinnitus since the 90s, loud music. It was totally tolerable. Aggravating yes but tolerable. I got J&J vaccine Wednesday and I'm going nuts with it.

I was so VERY hesitated to get the shot but I did due to health issues... and now in "buyer's remorse".

I just pray and pray hard.

The specialist I saw told me the vaccine could be the cause for the ringing, and a result of the immune response affecting the hair cells inside my cochlea. He told me that a large percentage of Americans have this problem, and deal with it, as there is no cure. He also said the commercials on TV that claim they can cure it just want to sell you hearing aids. Hard to remember everything he told me, but we discussed that he would order the audiology exam if I want, or the CT scan, but that he doesn't think they will find anything. I had a CT scan of my head in 2016 when I had a sinus infection behind my left eye, and he reminded me of that. If I had symptoms that were only affecting once side or the other, he would be much more concerned, so we left it as I will call in if symptoms get worse.

Still trying to remain hopeful it will go away, I guess. I am definitely on the fence with getting a vaccine booster at this point, as I don't want the ringing to get worse. On the flip side, catching COVID-19 could potentially be much more devastating or lethal.
