Psilocybin Stopped the Ringing in My Ears

Nope. If loud environments mask your tinnitus, you do not have reactive tinnitus
Is this true across the board? My tinnitus can be drowned out by pink noise but it spikes horribly while listening to music or when I am exposed to sounds like lawnmowers or leaf blowers. The tinnitus seems to compete with the sounds in those cases.

It's a bit of a long story. I had very mild tinnitus at first, it either went away or was so silent I forgot about it. During a very strong mushroom experience I was meditating towards the end of it and noticed my tinnitus again. It went very fast from there: it ramped up in volume during the following weeks and months and has gradually gotten worse ever since then. I suspect it might have been this meditation session that awoke the beast, because:

Leading scientist in the field have proposed that the act of paying attention to tinnitus (which everyone has to some extent in a very quiet environment) reinforces pathways in the brain that makes it both louder and permanent. Once the brain has "learned" to hear tinnitus, it cannot "unhear" it.

I suspect this is why some people report persistent tinnitus after psychedelic use: it could be the deciding factor between a person who exposes themselves to a lot of noise and doesn't get tinnitus, and a person who does get it with a similar history of noise exposure. For others the deciding factor could perhaps be stress, or other things.

I'm trying to keep this brief but my main point is that I think the increased neuroplasticity from psychedelics can have both good and bad outcomes. I doubt the mushrooms caused tinnitus on their own, but I think they may have been responsible for amplifying my very mild tinnitus probably caused by hidden hearing loss/synaptopathy I may have built up during years of listening to music through headphones.

Another reason I suspect them is because I got visual snow from psychedelics, and there is a link between that and tinnitus. The visual snow came years before the tinnitus though.

No, I have not tried any other psychedelics and unfortunately, probably never will. I used mushrooms many times after my initial tinnitus debut, and they didn't make it worse immediately afterwards from what I could tell.
I also had a moment in which I "learned" to hear my tinnitus and it never went away. Had zero issues before. Interesting.

I'm assuming it has variations. Mine spikes to everything and can't be masked. It's horrific high frequency noise.

My tinnitus faded to nearly nothing since having extreme tinnitus and we'll call it "bad" hyperacusis in 2016.

Through this time I am not ashamed to say I used psychedelics quite a few times, and each time my tinnitus completely went away and stayed away for some time afterwards.

If we are to assume neuroplasticity is a way through the noise, well, psychedelics are a great way to stimulate just that. Simply put, you're rewiring your brain when you do them.

Your mileage may vary. This isn't medical advice, and sure as shit isn't legal advice.

@Tom Cnyc, and the tinnitus went away? But came back later? Because the effect wore off? Because of a new trigger? Sounds amazing...

And was MDMA more effective than mushrooms?

Well I'm now on the path to microdosing. I understand that if you are doing it right, you shouldn't be getting intoxicated. How does one go about sourcing?
I ordered a kit online and sourced some spores from a site paying via Bitcoin. I didn't grow them and gave the kit and spores to my daughter, kinda forgot about this avenue. But recently she gave me 3 dried ones to try and I ground them up to put in capsules. Kind of chicken shit to take more than a tiny bit I'll admit.

First, I believe that the neuroplacticity theories and possibilities for healing have real potential and the OP sounds experienced and informed. That said, I want to amplify some of the OP's cautions about tripping. Some people are wired such that a trip can be a rather frightening and unpleasant experience, I have helped people through a few. For others it's all wonderful and really mind expanding. Given many of the stories and medical history that I often read here I would caution anyone really struggling with handling tinnitus to only consider this under the supervision of someone you trust that has experience handling someone having a bad trip. It's been decades but I have been that rescue person before. I am where the OP is in that tinnitus was relatively easy to mostly ignore but the pain component as he says, takes all your bandwidth. I ignore spikes all the time and they don't increase my fear or anxiety but that does not seem to be the norm here. Looks like there is value here, especially for debilitating chronic pain but I'm not sure how many of the people here would be glad that they tried this. No offense intended to the OP, he is trying to help and I think he discovered something potentially useful but remember that he started out trying to solve a pain problem and tinnitus does not bother him very much. He is also involved in a clinic and knows how to guide this process.

You are fantastic. Thanks for this info. I was able to find a connection today. He was able to allow me to fact check him so I will be moving forward with microdosing in a couple of days at 100 mg and don't expect to have any associated high/trip etc so I'm looking forward to it. Hoping it can help me with whatever this problem is that I am dealing with for my vision/focus and hey, if it knocks out the tinnitus, I will keep you all informed.

Well this didn't age well. I'd go back to this in a heartbeat over this visual nightmare I'm living with now.

@JK888, I was under the impression from your posts that microdosing would always result in tripping? Is that not the case? It seems in my research and talking with others that anything 100 mg and under should not result in any side effects.

No, microdosing never leads to tripping. If you are sensitive to meds, try at 50 mg and keep upping over some days to 300 mg at most. Of course you can feel side effects, like irritability. I don't take well to most serotonogetic drugs and musthrooms work on serotonin. A trip usually wouldn't start until at least 700 mg but more like a little over a gram.

THANK YOU!!! Super helpful! I would have tried this already had I known. I will be starting at 100 mg today.

Thanks so much. That's exactly what I'm doing. Tell me your thoughts:

100 mg Psilocybin (Cubensis)
1000 mg Lion's Mane
500 mg Niacin
200 mg L-Theanine

4 days on, 3 days off (still taking the other supplements on those days, just not Psilocybin).
It is tough to tell. The only way to know is to try. I am going off 40 mg of Valium and at 10.75 mg now. I am also switching from Anafranil for OCD to Nardil. I will only know by trying if I get better. Ketamine was doing great for me, but I got addicted to it and it made the tinnitus worse in the end. Still glad I did it because I learned a lot.

Hi @IntotheBlue03, thanks for the update. Sounds good. Any effect on vision or tinnitus?
Hey @Uklawyer. No effect on tinnitus but it's day 1. Could be placebo but I'm definitely calmer than ever despite my debilitating vision condition. Really hoping it helps with that. Will keep you posted over the month. I couldn't have found a better source honestly.

The TBI survivor I am modeling had tinnitus before his TBIs and still has it after. Unfortunately no effect for him. :(

Hey there, if you trust your source and do a dose of 0.1 g a day 4 days out of the week, you will be fine. I've had no adverse effects microdosing for 2 weeks if that helps. Today was my first potential good day with positive effects.
Keep posting results. I am looking to start this as soon as I find a mushroom source.

Basically, yes. My ears would be totally silent. And believe me - I looked for it.

I can't say what works better for tinnitus. MDMA is more fun than mushrooms are though. Lol.

@IntotheBlue03, what was the outcome of your trial on this?

Thanks,
George
