Those with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis — What’s the SAFEST Form of Ear Wax Removal Please?

Hello @Christophe_85

Well, it went surprisingly okay! I opted for the manual extraction which was fairly quick! As it turns out, I also have an ear infection which I'm surprised wasn't picked up by the Audiologist! My ear definitely feels better now it's clear though! Thank you for asking! (y)
Where was the ear infection (outer, middle or inner)?

Also, you know you said microsuction made your tinnitus worse, what happened? Did it make a loud noticeable noise when it sucked the wax out at a specific point? I had mine done and don't remember it being noisy, just uncomfortable.

Hi @Paulmanlike

It's an outer ear fungal infection I have, I've been given Canesten drops which will hopefully clear it up!!!

I think unfortunately regarding the MS the worsening was due to the incompetence of the Audiologist. He literally spent about 10 minutes trying to remove hard wax from my ear. He didn't know how to operate the camera when I asked if I could see the wax and had to ask his Receptionist!!! He made very damaging remarks about my hearing and how I was coping which were completely untrue! A visit to him is a decision I'll regret until my grave!

@Vicki14 I am glad it went well. For what it's worth, I get microsuction every 3-4 months and it has no effect on my tinnitus. If anything it lowers it because there's less wax.

I'm so glad that you're not affected by it! :) I guess I'm one of the rarer cases where it does! x

Hello Vicki !

Very good ! :)

Ok this is very good news for you if you can feel better ! :)

Do you know what caused your ear infection ?

As soon as the microsuction was done I felt immediate hearing loss in both ears. I had two audiograms done after that and both showed 50-60% hearing loss in
Hi frequencies. Elevated tinnitus developed along with severe sound sensitivity.
DON'T EVER GET THE MICROSUCTION PROCEDURE. You are better off sticking a spoon in your ear to clean out the wax..... not

Long time lurker, first time poster.

@Vicki14, was the Audiologist at the Hear Clinic the one who did the manual removal or the one who did the microsuction and made everything worse? I have an appointment on Friday at the same clinic and have specifically asked for a manual removal as I have both tinnitus and hyperacusis. Thank you in advance!

@Aaron91 - Yes, I got the manual removal
at The Hearing Clinic in Glasgow. Definitely do not opt for Microsuction, like I did at another Glasgow clinic as it absolutely screwed my tinnitus up and also gave me hyperacusis too. Hope you get on okay!!

I have struggled with my ears for the past months, infections, antibiotics etc. Then it slowly started getting better. I have been seeing my regular ENT weekly. When he removes earwax he uses a hook. He suctions sometimes very very carefully.

But... he is on vacation, I had a followup at the hospital on Thursday. Got lots of earwax buildup since my ears are getting better and overproduce right now. It was Extremely! loud. I do think when the suction get clogged it "screams", it was even a loud "bang" and it felt as my ears shriveled up. I even "jumped" at one point. Late Thursday evening I noticed my ringing was louder, with a new high pitched sound. It is Saturday morning now. Still here that new sound... I really hope it calms down.

Did you guys get better?
