Hi Everyone,

I developed tinnitus when I was about 20 years old and positional vertigo a few years later.

After 35 years I am still suffering with ear issues. The tinnitus is tolerable and the Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo comes and goes but finally after 20 years found a doctor who knew what it was and with the Canalith procedure the calcium stones that float in the ear get reattached. Easy in office procedure. About 20 years ago I had bad ear ache - drs had no idea what I had and lanced tympanic membrane in office.

Long story short, it never healed so therefore I have conductive as well as sensorineural hearing loss in that ear and am afraid to have the surgery with all these issues already. Fast forward I developed this thumping in right ear and its been gone for 10 years only to resurface a few weeks ago- like everyone else here, the ENT doesn't have much to offer-

Today I had it on and off basically all day- No pain but so annoying-

I had to beg for Klonopin since I read it helps but it just makes me tired - took it once the other day but not today- I am getting very depressed-

Don't know how I will go to work like this- Luckily I work part time and pray that I am symptom free on those days-

Don't know what else to do- it's brought on by hiccup, yawn, stretch or internal burp just like everyone else but the doctors looked at me like I was crazy- I tried so hard not to yawn today - Just a bad day today. :(

Thanks for having this site to write about it
Jessica

Just remember that you aren't alone, so many of us here have experienced the same feelings you are getting now and will again in the future. My T gives me anxiety, and doctors refuse to give me anything like Xanax and Klonopin, so I use herbal methods, and I know it sounds silly, but I recently met a yoga-head and she taught me loads of stuff which gives me a positive mind set and now I'm not on any meds for anxiety even herbal ones. I drink loads of herbal teas, do 10 mins of yoga from youtube in the morning (the idea is that you're thanking yourself for doing something good for you), keep my mind occupied with reading, gaming, baking, cooking, basically anything that will give you an emotional boost to hopefully get over the depressive episodes. I actually found that going to work helped me because I had something else to think about.

Now trust me, I did not think it would work at all. If you saw what state I was in a few weeks ago due to a spike you would think I was a different person. I was having constant panic attacks, couldn't think of anything but T, couldn't sleep, eat, was thinking a lot about ending it all... and to top it off i was on holiday! Not a great time when you're sat on a beach and can only hear a dentist drilling in your head. But I persevered and every day got a little better.

So whilst you might be struggling to control the T, you can control your reaction to this. Keep talking to the docs about your concerns for more treatment too.

Keep your chin up. x

Hello ladies,
I similarly suddenly starting experiencing thumps in my left ear (mostly). They are also triggered by yawns/ burps/ hiccups or sometimes if I just move my jaw or head. It's maddening-- sometimes mine go on for days. Have you all found any relief?

I am also trying stretches, Klonopin (not helping), and looking into going to a chiropractor or acupuncture. Let me know if you have found anything that helps, and I will do the same.

Hugs,
Aimee

What is the point of us all not killing ourselves if bio-medical research can't treat out conditions effectively?

I developed this thumping in right ear and its been gone for 10 years only to resurface a few weeks ago

Sometimes a small blood vessel is pushed closely to the inner ear and can be heard by your doctor. I would have this checked out. The ENT should have done this.

@aimeemaire did you find any improvement over time or is it as bad as when it began. Mine began a few days ago. It is constant, but only individual thumps in both ears. I'm definitely getting distressed

@Sarah101 mine will thump consistently for a few days and then stop for a day or so. Not sure why. I've seen some improvement taking muscle relaxers but it will still start again. Is yours in sync with your heart beat?

@aimeemaire it's not in time with my heart beat also all. Which muscle relaxants are you taking? Do you have tinnitus and does the medication affect it?

Did yours always stop for a day or two, or was it fairly consistent in the beginning? I'd love to have a few days break

@Sarah101 I have tried flexeril, klonopin, and soma. All three helped somewhat, but the thumps always came back eventually. I do not have tinnitus that I am aware of, I am still trying to rule out pulsatile tinnitus since my thumping is sometimes in sync with my heart beat, but not always. Mine stopped in the beginning. It tends to thump for 2-3 days (longest was 4 I think) and then rest for 1-2 days (longest was 6). It's been going on since October and started out of nowhere. I also experience ear fullness, crackling, and pain/soreness behind my ears and in my occipital lobe. All of those things started after the thumping.
