The term Tinnitology was coined by tinnitus research pioneer Professor Abraham Shulman, MD, who is profiled in the article below, as well as in a new article in the Spring 2018 Tinnitus Today magazine. The PDF version of the latest article is available online from the American Tinnitus Association site for a limited time.

Dr. Shulman, now 89 years young, who graduated medical school in Berne, Switzerland, is still practicing in NYC. He has been researching tinnitus since 1977, and has published a vast amount of medical literature on it.

This man deserves all the credit we can give him, as he is one of the earliest medical professionals who understood the need for research into tinnitus treatments, and made it his life's work to bring it about.

From the article below, "We must give Abe credit for single-handedly transforming the study of tinnitus throughout the world; there is no disputing this fact."

Has anybody in this forum gone to see him?? I had my first phone conversation with him today. I'm reviewing the information he gave me and considering to make an appointment. Praying first for guidance.

I thought he retired and relocated to Florida. I have talked to him in the past by phone. I would guess he would still recommend gabapentin/clonazepam combination.

He is still working at 89 yo! Is that what he recommended for you?

I was going to fly out to see him in NY, but he said that wasn't necessary. I was really in a bad mental state at the time. He talked to my primary care Dr. and my psychiatrist and recommended the gabapentin plus klonopin combination. He said he couldn't prescribe on the phone to myself. I would like to know if he has anything else to offer today. That was back in 2010-2011 from what I remember. I had the perfusions in my left ear at Paparella and Shea in 2010 and 2011 respectively from what I recall. Not sure if they helped or not.

I would be interested what he recommends to you? Please let me know and if they want you to fly to FL. I thought he retired and they relocated to FL as I said earlier. If he is still practicing in NY that would obviously be more convenient for you. I hope you can find some relief. I was doing good yesterday taking gabapentin and staying busy. I awoke to some static hissing this morning unfortunately. I have a oral appliance for TMJD that I forgot to use last night. Not sure if that helps. I was using that with some diazepam to help relax my jaw muscles. I also forgot to take diazepam. I had bad dreams/thoughts last night and that could be a factor in tension in my neck/jaw.

Please update on what he recommends to you. Take care.

He has not recommended anything yet. We spoke over the phone for a while and he asked me many questions. He is still working in Brooklyn, NY. He will like to see me and take it from there. I am just reading a bit more on what they do at the center and praying and thinking about it. He seemed genuine and never promised anything. But will like try and help me.

By the way have we talked before or am I confusing you with someone else?? :)
Where are you located. I hope you feel better soon. Interesting that I went to see my doctor yesterday and he recommended klonopin and gabapentin.

Does gabapentin help you? How much do you take??
Gabapentin plus klonopin used to help me until I fell asleep and awakened like right now. I just recently got gabapentin 300 mg prescribed. I'm having difficulty getting klonopin. I have some generic diazepam. This head noise sure can be brutal at times, but we have to deal with it somehow until something better comes along eventually. I sure hope Dr. Shulman can give you some relief.

I used to take gabapentin 300 mg/3 day plus taking .5 mg klonopin at the same time. Sometimes I upped the gabapentin much higher.

You could try benadryl if you think it is sinus related.

I'm doing bad today. You may need to stay on gabapentin plus clonazepam consistently for a couple weeks to get full effect. Sometimes dry mouth from gabapentin. My whole body hurts today plus static noise. So not good.

I would like to know if this protocol is current for Dr. Shulman? I should talk to him again. I only have generic India diazepam 10 mg plus regular prescribed gabapentin 300 mg for now. I want instant silence and it doesn't always work that way.

did you follow up with Dr. Shulman? I still think he is one of the most knowledgeable tinnitus Dr.'s despite his age.
Hi, I am sorry I didn't answer earlier. I never received an alert that you sent me a message. Bummer.

Well, I have an appointment with him on January 22, 2019. We did not discuss any particular treatment over the phone. I will report after I see him ok.

So you took gabapentin 300mg 3 times a day and .5mg klonopin 3 times a day also??? Did it quieten your tinnitus?? Why did you stop this treatment if it helped you??

Well yeah it seemed to work quite well back then. I would still wake up with loud hissing/ringing after a nap or upon awakening. I wanted to go back on that combo again but the Dr.'s wouldn't prescribe me Klonopin. Originally I had only left ear high pitched piercing ringing. I seem to be doing pretty good atm for some reason. I am currently taking some diazepam, gabapentin and also some type of hemp oil. I was also going to try @R. David Case's tinnitus mix.

@just1morething I did go see Dr. Shulman.
That's great. What did he have to say? Did he prescribe anything to you?

I just went to see Dr. Abraham Shulman in Brooklyn, he wants me to have an electrocochleaography test done. I really was not expecting this... I am not doing it. He said either way we will move forward and try to find a therapy that will help me. Have another appointment in 2 weeks.

I had to fill a 20+ pages questionnaire. The visit was about 3 hours long! (sigh) He asked many questions, explained a lot of things and checked up ears/nose/eyes/throat.

He also wants me to do the qEEG test, https://brainworksneurotherapy.com/qeeg-brain-mapping
which determines in what area of my brain the tinnitus is and how "intrusive or intense"? it is. After this test he will be able to discuss what kind of therapy to follow.

He never talked about Klonopin and Gabapentine. I didn't mention it either (honestly I forgot as I was overwhelmed with all the questions he was asking me.) He wanted short answers, which made it a bit hard for me to explain myself...

I will update you after my next visit.

Waiting on Neuromod.

From what I read in current Tinnitus Today magazine nothing has changed much in 30 years. Better graphics. I do hope research is advancing. I've been through just about every therapy, and I do habituate. It is the spikes that bring me down. For what it is worth therapy and attaining habituation is the best one can hope. Hang in there and prayers to all.

@OnceUponaTime, I didn't notice an alert on your post on Thursday. Just read it today. At least he is thorough, but the main thing is if he really lowers your tinnitus. Testing is one thing and positive results is well another thing.

Thanks for the update!

Today I traveled into NYC to have the QEEG test done. Simple procedure.

Yeah, what Dr. Shulman does (if I understand correctly) with this test is to compare it with other patients tests and from his years of experience, he is able to see what medicine/therapy worked for other patients that had a similar test result than mine. (Not sure if you understand or if I explained it well.)

@Ken219 I've had tinnitus for 7 years. Thank you for your well wishes.

Once.

@OnceUponaTime Sorry about the miscalculation. I have to stop using common core math. many years ago I had a test where a connector was placed on my forehead and a sensor in my ear. I think it had something to do with transmit and receive timing. What was your test like? Many wires?

Lots of wires connected to my head, forehead, nose and earlobes. Test was about 20 minutes.

Hi once
I do wonder why dr shullmann didn't mention the Gabapentin...
He wouldn't until I had some tests done. He did mentioned that he has helped people with a variety of therapies including medication therapy. Going to see him next week.

HI Once :)
Found this post and wondering how things have gone with Dr. Schulman? Is there any hope for long term sufferers of severe T/Hyperacusis.
I might ask my psychiatrist about the gabapentin/klonopin combo - most doctors are not knowledgeable in any way about Tinnitus in my experience. My primary gave me trazadone to initially get off klonopin and within a few days I was experiencing glass shattering
sounds in my left ear - now that was unnerving! Stop trazadone and threw it away!

Hi Once,
Really want to know what the result/more visits id any after "Going to see him next week" (that was posted mid February). I asked once earlier but seems not able to find your response. Again thanks...

Hi @Carltonr,

Sorry I didnt get any messages that you were trying to contact me as I do not follow this thread and you did not quote me before today.

I went to see Dr. Shulman. What a great doctor and person he is. Anyways, I was prescribed Klonopin at a very small dose 1/2 of .5mg. I've been taking it and so far I feel so much better. No headaches and no side effects either. Also, much calmer and not so edgy. I have not started gabapentin. He suggested waiting until May. Every case he sees is different so he goes case by case. My tinnitus is severe but I live a full life. I have hope. :)

He wanted to make sure I'd do good on Klonopin before giving me a combo that might not help me.
Why did your doctor wanted you off Klonopin? If you are going to ask your doctor about this combo, please have the studies printed out and give him a copy also call Dr. Shulman, he answers all his calls himself.

I hope I answered your questions.
