Cause of Tinnitus
cleaning out wax
I have had tinnitus for around 5 weeks now.

I have tried to take precautions by not listening to music through headphones but still been in the gym listening to music through speakers around 85 Decibels. Tinnitus been constant

However, got these custom earplugs last few days and taken them into the gym but tinnitus has got noticeably worse with a much higher pitch. The ear plugs don't feel particularly comfortable but it seems my "ear injury" is at the top of my ear carnal and seems sore. By the way my original tinnitus was foolishly caused by me putting a match in my left year at the top of my ear carnal to clean the wax. That part seems sore and cause the Tinnitus

I don't understand why. Any ideas why ?

I find noise reduction plugs better as got a spike when took out foam plugs .
I think the pressure from plugs can spike tinnitus not like vented ones.

HI @Sash

Certain exercises particularly running on hard ground or on a treadmill, can make tinnitus worse for some people. If you are doing one or both of these activities, stop them for a while and see if there's a reduction in the tinnitus. It is caused by impact underfoot that travels up the body to the head and auditory system. If loud music is being played at the gym - and I imagine this is so due to you wearing earplugs. If the music is loud enough, it can pass through your skull/head and be transferred to your inner ear by bone conduction and make your tinnitus worse. The best earplugs won't help if external sound is too loud.

I want to say this in regards to the gym and intense exercises. I have been lifting weights since I was 15 years old and use to train people as well. When you are doing intense exercises, you are basically adding stress to the body. When the body is stressed, there is a chance that the tinnitus can peak or a spike could come on. After you are done with the routine, things can settle down.

I use to lift heavy weights and still do at times and I can feel that my tinnitus at times might seem louder. The great trade off is this, If I lift harder and workout harder, then I get more out of my workout and that intense routine really makes a person tired. Even though I might have put my body under stress in the gym, when I get home and the rest of my day is so so mellow......that even this HORRIBLE loud screaming tea kettle from hell, doesn't bother me.

This is how I do it, I am not recommending for folks to go to the gym or getting into intense routines either....

It really doesn't even have to be weight lifting, doing activities(safe for you and your ears) that can tire you out, can be beneficial and cause a great amount of distraction from the tinnitus.

Thanks a lot for the reply. The customise earplugs are made of silicone and they are putting pressure which seem to make it worse.

Hi Michael.

Its been fine with exercise (lifting weights) and music over the past few weeks Its the customised earplugs (ACS) that seem to be problem as that's when its got noticeably worse and have used these new earplugs only last couple of days. I think its the pressure and the tightness from the earplug is causing the problem.

Maybe will try with different earplugs. I did wear different earplugs two weeks ago (Etymotic Research ETY-Plugs) in a nightclub and they were fine.
