Vote for University of Michigan (Susan Shore) Tinnitus Research — Winner Gets a Write-Up

So as long as you don't start something and leave me holding the bag! bahahahaha

Hey, I slept like a baby last night... 10hrs!!! I can't believe it! I was so tired yesterday, I crashed...hahaha:LOL:

Who's ready for the next project??

Me! Was a great feeling to be working towards something and actually feeling like we were making a difference.

I keep going to vote again, and then remembering that it's finished! :)

???

There will be an "Editors' Pick"?

The winners, including both the STAT Madness Champion and the Editors' Pick, will be announced on Monday, April 8 at 4:30 a.m. ET.

Taken from STAT website.

Uhmmm, what?! Michigan is the winner, so that's getting a write-up right?

Otherwise we have been royally screwed! :/

The 2019 STAT Madness bracket is now closed. The winners, including both the STAT Madness Champion and the Editors' Pick, will be announced on Monday, April 8 at 4:30 a.m. ET.

They probably pick another topic they find interesting as Editors' Pick. Michigan is the STAT Madness champion so two will get a write-up.

Oh sorry... didn't read that properly. Pheww, I got nervous there.

But I still think it is a joke that another team will get a write-up too. Will they feature alongside each other I wonder? Because that could take all the attention away from tinnitus/University of Michigan :(

I agree and if they somehow end up promoting the Editors' Pick more than the Michigan one, it's a fucked up contest!

When the contest was running, was there even a mention of there being an Editors' Pick? I never saw any mention of that?

Or did they add that after the fact because their editorial team didn't like tinnitus winning?

It was always mentioned since the beginning.

"Editor's Choice Winner. Following the tabulation and identification of a Consumer Bracket Winner, the Judges will, applying the Judging Criteria to select an Editor's Choice Winner among the remaining Potential Winners. The Consumer Bracket Winner and the Editor's Choice Winner can be the same Potential Winner."

This means we can get both! Imagine that!!!!!

Hi all!

I agree completely, as we have been saying, I feel it is a good idea to email Susan Shore and their team and let them know how Tinnitus Talk supported their campaign and that they have our entire support (so they know that we are very excited about their innovation and we are here to support the product launch!).

And yes! What's next? Let's keep the momentum!

Hi Guys,

Why spend time worrying about the editor's choice? It's out of our hands and we have to trust it will be handled properly.

My concern is with the write-up and that the full spectrum of tinnitus be represented.

This is also an opportunity to promote the need for research for effective treatments and a cure to students and attract them to the field of tinnitus research. So the fact that the number of studies of tinnitus is on the rise is important. As is the effect on Veterans and the funding provided by Department of Defense. This can generate some excitement in academic circles.

I saw that ATA had something about the competition on their Facebook page. As we know they can be a fountain of misinformation.

So, it's important that Markku and Tinnitus Talk are represented to not only promote the good here but also to balance off ATA.

My only concern is if this write-up says "What's more typical is that it'll fade away over time" or "It goes from 99 percent of your life to one percent". Or perhaps "you need to try harder to habituate". I'm just waiting to see another chance at large scale exposure destroyed by statements like this. This completely undermines the message of urgency we are trying to convey. Please get this right STAT Madness.

This.

Oh please Lord, don't let them ruin this for us!
Why you guys got me thinking now! ughhh :nailbiting:

Absolutely, this is a real concern. Given how important Tinnitus Talk has been to the success of Susan Shore's research getting the write-up it would be reasonable if Tinnitus Talk contacted STAT Madness to ask for copy-approval of the write-up. As Tinnitus Talk represents the global online tinnitus community that is a reasonable request. That way we can be a lot more reassured about the content of the write-up.

I don't thing we were ever a serious contender for the Editors' Pick.

I assume the editors are looking for more theoretical pharmaceutical or scientific breakthroughs.

Tinnitus is not sexy.

So I am relieved that we won the STAT Madness thing... It emphasizes to the pharma world that there are A LOT of people waiting for tinnitus relief. And a lot of people = a lot of cash.

Don't worry... they will notice us.

Let's hope. I have faith that hopefully STAT's write up will be compelling, and hopefully, really explain how severe and horrifying this condition can truly be for so many people.
We have to make sure the attention is focused on biomedical research, Susan Shore's device, Neuromod, hearing loss restoration research and not TRT/CBT and Pawel Jastreboff's dogma that held the field back.

Tinnitus research needs to be cross disciplined with hearing loss research and hyperacusis research.
They should not be treated as totally separate issues, that's how palliative medicine holds back research

PS: they will talk to Susan for the write-up, right?

I am more than confident that she knows the condition.

Let's stop worrying (it's bad for our tinnitus) and just savour the moment while we wait and see!

TRT/CBT doesn't work for everyone. The article that someone posted recently has PROVEN that. That really needs to be spread around as much as possible - to the higher-ups and such - so they know that their old thinking no longer supplies here.

I think TRT only benefits one type of hyperacusis (loudness hyperacusis), I don't think it does anything for noise induced pain or the trigeminal nerve irritability tensor tympani spasm's people experience. I think other types of hyperacusis heal on their own usually and are falsely attributed to TRT.

It's going to be needle and pins to get clinic research on this, audiologists won't hear about it or care either.

I think so.

Can you share the article??

@Hazel Excellent video! Thank you for your hard work. :huganimation:
I hope you shared it with Susan Shore and STAT News.

@Jcb Stop biting your nails now! hahaha :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

I have confidence that STAT will cover this properly - a brief background search shows that they're a highly reputable and ethical news site. They're also obviously going to speak to Dr. Shore and her team, and it won't be in their interests to downplay tinnitus any more than it will be in ours.

I know it's a medical journal, but it may add a bit of human interest to know about the people behind the push for this win. Perhaps we could send them a kind of group statement?

@Markku is there any plan to send them an official Tinnitus Talk statement?

I just think that whatever we do we should remember that it isn't our news site, so even though we voted we don't get to make demands of them editorially and shouldn't be emailing them in an entitled way, as this will just alienate us.
