Wondering What We All Do for Our Work/Job/Living

What an interesting thread. And such a diverse group of people! The more perspective we get from each others' unique life experiences, the better.

So I am... (take a guess??)....
A journalist. I have worked in newspapers since I was 18 years old, spending most of my career at a large regional daily in Florida. I have done many different things -- reporting, editing, management -- but primarily have been an aging issues specialist. It's been an exciting, if somewhat stressful, life; every day, you are learning something new. And I have got to interview famous people, gone to the White House, cover multiple hurricanes, been a first responder to a major airplane crash and ridden in the Goodyear Blimp. Three times!

Also: Avid traveler, hiker, paddler, gardener, camper, volunteer teacher, theater and movie fan, wife, singer.

This is not a real picture of me. My hair is a different color. :)

My profession seems so boring compared to most of you. At the moment I am a home mum looking after two young boys. A four year old and a two year old. However before having my children I was a high school teacher. I taught Politics, Italian and English literature.

Nothing boring about that Miss Lavender. Bringing up my three sons was probably the most worthwhile work I ever did. And now that they're adults it's even more fun :)

@LadyDi gosh you pack a lot into life !! Sounds great and I bet you have lots of stories to tell at a dinner party with your career ;) we visited Florida 2 years ago did the whole Disney thing and universal / sea world we had the best time ever the people in the sunshine state are so friendly ! Would dearly love to go back ! Xx

I'm not Mick Jagger, or any other member of the Rolling Stones, as Karl once wondered because of my on-line name. It was Karl's comment, along with being a Stones fan, that prompted me to change my avatar.

I'm a chemical engineer working in the pharmaceutical industry; I specialize in chemical plant automation and control.

Until I read @Danny's comment, I had been toying with retiring and starting a new career as gigolo. Now I have to rethink that plan. I'm middle aged, but I still have all my hair and I'm not too fat. I'd appreciate the advice of a grizzled veteran. Do you think I might have a chance at making a living at it, Danny?

Based on the $5.77 that I've made this year, it's probably not a good bet.

I teach history and government/social studies at high school level. However, this next school year they've "forced" me down to sixth grade, which I don't want to, nor know if I can do.

But that's one week away still. One week left of summer break...

Hey Sven, how are you doing? As I remember, on another thread, you were having a tough time a week or so back.

It's never too late to try! :)

I am a Human Resources Director for a medical device company in the Silicon Valley and I own two Wetzel's Pretzels franchises. The pic on my Avatar is Joey Ramone. I'm asian in real life.

Software developer. I used to write piles of poo inside a Dilbert strip. Now I work from home as a contractor. My avatar is Tom Braidwood, who played Melvin Frohike in X-Files.

Thank you for asking! It was tough back in June, followed by a quite OK July... I've been keeping busy moving and renovating and by doing that keeping my T at bay, but now as the school year is about to start it's getting worse again. I don't think it's stress related, but I do think that it actually did get worse that evening two months ago. This morning (It's 8:40 as I'm typing this) it's annoying me quite a lot.

How are you doing?

Hey Sven: like you, it's up and down. It literally goes day by day. I guess it will always be that way... Although I notice you have ad this for a long time. Did you ever try something like TRT? Cognitive behavioral therapy? Or at times, did you just not notice it for long periods and it just went to the back burner?

Yeah, I am typing this at 9 am on a Sunday morning and mine is annoying me, too. Time to turn on the radio.

I retired 2007. Developed T 2011. I did a bit of travelling before and I could travel no more. My T is too severe most of the time. My daughter owns an employment placement agency and I work for her part-time from home (head hunting, telephone interview screening). With the severity of my T, I could not go back into the workforce.

I am an ophthalmologist [eye surgeon] doing cataract, lasik and all sort of eye surgeries.

I have slight halos and 9mm or wider pupils by default, I figured I am not a good candidate, other than that there is some controversy over the flap never healing. If anything I think I would go lasEk. Other wise -1,00 spheric, and -2,25 cyl would be doable but I dont have the balls.
I guess I will stick to the Acuvue Oasys :p

This post really cheered me up!
It´s been my second month by T and at the beginning I thought that I was going to be disabled by T forever and would never be able to work again.

I am a journalist for a news agency in Tokyo :)

Hey, welcome fellow journalist! I am a reporter based in Florida for a large regional newspaper. I have had T about six months and also thought I never would be able to continue my job. But in those six months, I only missed two days of work.

That's impressive @LadyDi ;) I took 3 weeks off them was back to work on a gradual return schedule back fully now and loving my work more than ever ! But you have done really well with leave from work especially in the early days. I hope your doing ok been thinking about you Cher xx

I'm an Asst VP at a very small investment firm (but AUM is pretty big... just small in # of employees). I do trade settlement, performance calculations, portfolio statistics... numbers, numbers, numbers... records, records, records. I am fortunate that my employer has provided me with the flexibility to take care of my twin boys, one with special needs (he was born 1 pound! and the love of my life... even at 18yo... he's still a great "kid"! as is his brother :) )

I'm an unpaid advocate for people with disabilities. I'm on a state-wide board for parents of visually impaired children, as well as on the parent board (covering the Northeast). I'm a committee member of Community Programs Advisory Committee (as the only parent voice)

In my free time, I watch at much football as possible! I don't care who is playing, I'll watch. I'm wearing Amendola in my pic, but I also wear Gronk sometimes. Had Welker, but he broke my heart. lol BTW, I kick butt in Pigskin Pick'em, but I can't Fantasy to save my life.

I also enjoy exploring dark beers. Guinness is my trusted favorite, but I like to explore.

Wow this thread has been knocked around for a while. I hesitate to respond as everyone here has some interesting occupations. I'm a stay at home wife/homemaker. I just love being home. My child is raised and starting her own journey in life. I've got an empty nest.
I've worked off and on. I worked as a house cleaner in my last job, for a few years with my friend, up until last year. My knees are shot and I decided to give my body a break.

Raising a child and teaching him/her the life skills needed to successfully strike out on their is one of life's most challenging jobs -- and it appears you are very good at it. Congratulations! You should be proud of yourself. This comes from someone who does not have her own children but works as a volunteer with teens. So I get to see the end product of parenting and respect what a tough job it is.

Hey dear Cher, I have been thinking of you, too. Looks like the tough days are behind us both at least for now. I am feeling stressed by the holidays and learning how to control that better this year, where to cut back. I am so glad things are good for you at work and hope all is well with your family.

I started Neuromonics yesterday! Very excited. Will post more on it later. I also am flying on Dec 25 for the first time since I got T from my transatlantic flight this summer. We both are moving forward. Life is good.
Hugs,
Diane

I work in a pharma company (guess i am the only 1 here)
Any chance of one of the large pharmaceutical companies will support T research do you think? I couldn't resist the question, although I know this is just the "lunch break room". Not trying to be too off topic but the name of the group is after all Off Topic. I've always wondered if the pharmaceutical industry was interested in T, or if it's too little money in it for them - a lifelong medication should generate some motivation for them. A cure I understand will never come from that industry as it kills any potential for medicine use.

Well anywho, interesting to learn more about the people here. When I'm not here I'm busy being a cosmonaut for the Russian space travel program, but we are a bit short of funds at the moment.
