  • What to realistically do for money if never had a job before and have reactive tinnitus?
    DeanD
    Just some suggestions:
    1. Look for a work from home position
    2. Start a side hustle online that doesn't involve having to deal with people directly - learn a skill if needs be
    3. Look at places like Fiverr and Upwork and see if you have in demand skills that do not require listening to audio and list as a service provider - much of this is done through online messages rather than voice calls
    cyberspace
@DeanD I've looked at these but some heavy barriers is that I don't have any job experience nor skills since I was just in high school a couple months ago, and I also don't have a high school diploma due to missing credits, especially because I couldn't properly go to school at all the final few months of it due to tinnitus
    DeanD
I'm really sorry to hear this for you to get this at such a young age. I also have reactive tinnitus so know how challenging this. It is possible though, I do work full time. The suggestions of side hustles and Fiverr etc.. don't need college degree and diplomas. Skills can be learned, knowledge gained, limitations are only bound by your determination.
Have you any thoughts of something you'd like to go in to?
I'm in a habit of having my earmuffs on almost 24/7 to be safe in case of any random/unexpected noise exposures
    4Grace
How much louder is your T with muffs? I'm not a doctor but over protection is not good for you. I think you have a good chance of recovery. 24/7 may not be a good idea inside the house.
My tinnitus ALWAYS spikes/gets louder after putting in qtips, but if I don't then my ears stay uncomfortably itchy
I've been taking advice I read here about "it's impossible to overprotect" and it seems like my sound sensitivity is becoming 100x worse
    Tryn2BHopeful
Both audiologist I spoke with warned me to not over protect or sound sensitivity would become terrible. Only to do so when sound would be damaging to others... like the mower

You have to understand how tinnitus and hyperacusis works in order to understand why the brain does what it does. In short, your brain needs to be exposed daily to everyday noises in order to reassure itself that sound is safe and not hurtful.
Does the wind spike anyone else's tinnitus?
    cjbhab
Yes it spikes my tinnitus. Living in a windy place is annoying when you love golf.
    cyberspace
@cjbhab how can it be protected against? I heard earmuffs and earplugs worsen it due to the occlusion effect
    cjbhab
Best is to just stay inside but I find a toque helps or put your hood up if you have a hoodie. Cover the outside of your ears.
Was having a good night for once with my tinnitus. Then my neighbors screamed in their backyard right next to my window, tinnitus spiked.
Does overprotecting make you more susceptible to spikes when you are exposed to noise? It seems like the more I protect the easier I spike
    Tryn2BHopeful
That's how understand it. Your auditory system loses resilience to sound, so you become more sensitive to it.
Hate having to put my earmuffs on every 2 mins. second I take them off, a plane flying above my house, then a loud motorcycle, etc. Constant
    (2) Pro-life or pro-death, just curious of what the objective point of living when you can't enjoy anything is
    MadeleineHope
Yes, pls ignore ajc's comment above; I'm not sure why, but he seems to like to make these types of provocative comments that lack in empathy. Hard to understand, especially since he used to be severely suicidal himself.

I & many others here completely understand where you're coming from ❤️
    MadeleineHope
Pls remember that although things feel very final right now, they very well could change for the better for you - even drastically so. So although there may be no quality of life now, this could very well change in the future. And suicide will always remain an option... no one can ever take that away from you. Idk why, but knowing that last bit helps me keep going.

(1)What's the point of living when you can't enjoy anything with this condition? I'm not trying to be dark or depressing, I'm neither
Tinnitus is a progressive condition. I've lost all hope
    4Grace
@cyberspace - last guy. It's loud. Acts up at times. 15 years ago wanted to take his life. He's made friends with it.
    4Grace
@cyberspace - don't look at my situation. It's different.I have a medical condition. I really think your going to be okay.
    cyberspace
@4Grace I think I'm fucked mainly because of the fact that I've had very faint tinnitus and visual snow all of my life for as long as I can remember even since I was a toddler, and that my tinnitus was triggered so young (15 and 18) despite not even being around much loud noise. Signs that I was destined to get it and have some neurochemistry and genetic predispositions to it
Anyone hate how when you tell anyone (especially doctors/therapists) about your tinnitus they ask if you've seen an ENT and tell you to
    4Grace
@cyberspace @Tryn2BHopeful - I waited in anticipation for so many appointments. Pushing to advance dates all for nothing. Zero. Waste of time. I gave up on all of it. It was nice to maintain that hope but that's about it.
    cjbhab
Then they look dumbfounded at me when I tell them that mayo clinic told me to fuck off haha.. excuse my language
    Juliane
People are so clueless. Ignore them
Listened to music for less than 5 minutes on iPhone speaker maybe 30% volume. Insane spike. My life is over.
    kingsfan
Can you listen to the same type of music on other speakers? I don't have a very good tolerance to distorted guitars and brass instruments so I mainly listen to hip hop now, and sprinkle some rock and grunge here and there. Absolutely cannot listen to metal or hardcore at any volume.
    cyberspace
@kingsfan It seems like almost any noise spikes my tinnitus, even things like TV volume on 2-3, gaming console/PC fan, etc
    cyberspace
Sometimes my ears seem to be tolerant to spiking while other times they're hypersensitive to noises
Has anyone spiked due to the doorbell before?
    4Grace
I would like to repeat that I once thought that these type spikes were imaginary. Not possible. My left ear is extremely sensitive. Even if I have zero emotional reaction to a sound yes almost any sound now spikes me. Unless it happens to you, you will never know. My T is loud and getting louder from everyday sounds. I need for it to go down once. Every AM I say this is the day.
I want to die. I'm suffering intensely because some asshole decided to be sadistic and torture me
    4Grace
I feel for you. I really do. This condition is insane. Protecting against noise is like attempting to protect against the wind.
My tones have been going crazy since that asshole blasted his car horn right next to me on purpose yesterday
    (3) The absolute worst I ever have. All the progress I made gone. I've had it. This is my final straw.
    (2) Blew past while honking their horn as loud as they could right next to me, just because they saw I had earmuffs on. Now I'm spiking
    kingsfan
oh jfc.. I wish I could connect my clenched fist to their weak chin for you
    (1) Was walking outside to a secluded trail area near me to stay so I could avoid the Halloween night noises, while I was walking a truck
Why do people own dogs just to carelessly leave them in the yard to bark nonstop and disturb others?
    Juliane
    Carelessness
    4Grace
It's insane how much people with good ears take for granted. Good ears can take a licking and keep on ticking for many… not all.
Hit my earmuff on a door while walking, spiked again. Is this level of reactivity normal?
    cyberspace
Can't believe that one low IQ careless, manipulative, clueless "audiologist" destroyed my life.
    4Grace
    What happened?
    cyberspace
@4Grace microsuction earwax removal, I explicitly told them that I wasn't comfortable with it yet they kept lying and trying to pressure me into it
Neighbors dog barked nonstop in their backyard right next to my window. Tinnitus spiked.
    T
I'm sorry that happened to you. Shouldn't have to deal with that sort of shit.
Woke up less than 20 minutes ago. Already spiked twice due to two things happening.
    4Grace
So sorry to hear. Do the spikes last long? What would you honestly rate the sound level at. Today mine has hit an 11. Multi tone, solid, high pitch, static and hissing in ear and middle of my head. If this does not go down …. I'm in big trouble.
    cyberspace
@4Grace bad to the point where I've been doing the "life is over" dance
    4Grace
