Chit Chat and All That...

I am a city boy who is coming back to nature, I just finished building raised beds because the ground is old crushed bricks, sand etc. But where the earth has been made good, I've got tons of flowers and local plants going. 3 avocado trees, a small lemon tree and a local equivalent that's a citrus that I don't even know what its name is in English. Turmeric, ginger, garlic, onions, lemon grass, and more green stuff my wife eats or cooks with that I know the names in Lao but not in English. We don't have enough space for animals.
Don't worry about animals. It's a lot of work and if you get emotionally attached it can get brutal. Ah, that's good you're doing all that. I would love to grow some Turmeric, it's a bit pricey to buy here. Those raised beds sound so lovely!!!
I want to become more self sufficient with the food I eat. I built our house and steam bath (ego talk) and am now onto the fun and challenging part of working with nature and learning how to grow stuff. No more building for Daniel with tinnitus and bad ears, gardening is perfect. We have some farmers in the family who live about an hour away who I can use as as a resource for knowledge. They are awesome people and have always been super kind to me.
Ego away! ;) That's awesome you built them. I can't give up power tools. I just got done residing the front of the house and there's so many projects and things I need to build. I just make sure I have ear protection! Plus, I really like building things. I don't want to have to give that up! That's nice they share like that. It's always good.
I will get some pictures together to share with you in due time. Today I bought a purple bougainvillea plant to spice up the balcony and to provide some shade. In Boston the plants and trees and insects are really different. I do miss the berries and melons from home. Now is harvest season for local oranges which means fresh orange juice everyday. The fruits here are amazing and the veggies are great too. The pig is delicious and folks eat a lot of river fish, duck, frogs, snails, and chicken. I eat fish and meat sparingly for health and other reasons and have a sweet tooth which is my biggest addiction after giving up tobacco which I smoked for decades. I share your addiction to baby potatoes.
I look forward to the pictures!!!! Everything sounds lovely. Oh, fresh oranges! I love oranges and grapefruits and would love to grow them. It's been a while since I've had frog... I don't think I really thought it was great or not. Ah, the sweets. When I changed my diet I thought I'd never love veggies and stuff like I did sweets. But now I love the healthier eating. I still have sweets, but I'm not consumed by them. Baby potato buddies! I'm in potato country so I love robbing the ones they toss and using them for starts. I wish I could hit up the sweet potato farmers and get them. One farmer used to give my dad bags for free because he worked on the equipment. I remember we took them to my grandma's B-day and everyone went crazy for them. (We were snobs because they were storage ones and "old".)
I want camping in South Dakota and have visited 2 times for that reason. Enchanted land that touched me in a spiritual or magical way.
Really? The Black Hills portion I assume? There is something about the land in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and certain parts of Colorado and South Dakota that feels like nothing else.
This is one rambling disjointed post, forgive me Shera.
Happy New Year and all that Jazz. Warm wishes for you and your loved ones.
Don't worry I'm the queen of rambling. (Sorry @aot, he knows! ;))

Hope you have a great New Year as well!

@Shera, hi.

Full disclosure. My avocados haven't fruited yet and my garden produces enough matter to feed a squirrel or spice up a soup.

It is fun and soil is coming soon.

I use foam plugs with earmuffs over them if I need to hammer or do something. Pain in the ass but my ears likey.

Black hills and bad lands... super fun for an East Coast boy.

It's the intent and they're usually like that when first starting out. Fun!!! I tried all compost soil this year that I made and it worked out so good for me.

The foam plugs seem to tick my ears off most of the time. For the real power tools I use muffs. I have a feeling it all has something to do with how tiny and shallow my ear canal is.

It truly is. Spear Fish Canyon is one of my favorite hikes in the Black Hills. I know there's other great ones, but I love it.

Currently watching a Netflix movie called I'm Thinking Of Ending Things. (Be forewarned that it is very weird).

One of the characters, an old woman, has tinnitus. They call it by name. It's clearly bothering her very much, says it sounds like a humming, buzzing, or a whispering. A phone rings and she reacts badly, which might indicate a degree of hyperacusis as well.

Movie is paused. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm going to guess things don't work out well for her.

When you speak of hiking or long walks, my wife and myself have walked across Spain three times. That's over 1500 miles. If you don't know who you are, 500 miles of thinking will help. Some people lose their heads at it because they can't take on board the dealing with the inner self.

A friend said I'm going to go and walk that walk because if you can do it so can I.

Well she did, and the 3rd day she lost it and tried to run so it would be over. No, she spent 5 days recovering from torn tendons in the ankle. Her partner had to make the trip over to walk with her. When they returned we asked the question. Her reply... fuck that.

Before tinnitus this type of adventure was my jam :rockingbanana: Right now I know I'd go crazy. :sour:

Wow. I can't believe she didn't just call it quits and chill.

I just finished watching Fury Road for the first time in years. Hot damn, that movie still rocks. Aged amazingly.

Though, I wonder if any of the cast/crew ended up with tinnitus.

Also, my damn Visual Snow is flaring up again. I had to watch cartoons while wearing sun glasses.

Never thought of the cast getting tinnitus, but in that line of work they could have already had it. The stunt guys anyway. I really need a rewatch!! Of the whole franchise.

Bummer! Is it colored lenses that help?

Yes. My visual snow is actually rather mild (I have little to no visual snow outside of dark room.) But my floaters and negative after images have been pretty bad lately, (after images especially, when looking at large screens.) Sunglasses help me a lot, but I can't speak for anyone else. Right now I'm just chalking it up to a flare up, which happens from time to time.

Glad the visual snow is mild.

OMG!!! I had a severe flare up of floaters. I finally ignored my regular doctor and went in for an eye infection. My regular doctor says everything is allergies. My small town eye doctor didn't care. So I went to a specialist and had it looked at. She was super thorough and actually checked my retina since I had after images and streaks of white "lightning" everything is good. It's nice to have it confirmed.

The floaters came on so fast and thick. Some of them were right in my line of sight. Occasionally one will still get me.

Oh! @Elmer B Fuddled, on January 12th my first batch of chickens hatched. One died, two made it and the other egg never hatched. I think (pray) they are hens. Silkies are hard to sex. One is smooth feathered, and the other is definitely silkie. They both act like hens. (I have a test to see if they rooster breast bump at things.) Sadly one of my white ladies died. My last white silkie doesn't really lay much anymore so it look like I might end up with a heard of black silkies.

The babies are really starting to move around and poor Sneakers has been banished from the cage. I will miss her hunting the mice, but I had a close encounter where she almost pounced on a baby chick!!

Exicted for this movie, but I bet they're going to focus on the boring people stuff for like 75% of it.

I know MRIs make a lot of people on here nervous. So I thought I'd share I had one. It was my neck so I was really in it and while it sounded weird. And my tinnitus did weird things to the noises. It didn't even cause a spike. I wonder if it's because my tinnitus was not sound induced? Anywho, thought I'd share.

@aot, those were brilliant!

I use all power tools in my wood shop and don't wear ear protection because my tinnitus is not caused by noise.

Happy to hear from you, @Labyrinthine. How's your hyperacusis? Still improving?

I hope you're back to something at least resembling happy and healthy.

It's funny. Before tinnitus I protected my ears while working with power tools, and now I really do. But you're right I don't notice much of a change with my tinnitus. I do notice when I'm hitting metal on metal tools that "shifts" my ears a bit. It's so weird.

Or my air nailer in closed spaces. That will physically "shift" something.

Hey man. Thanks for asking. Hyperacusis is decent. I'm back to taking regular walks (outside ) and listening for a few songs once a in a while. Still struggling with pain related to my physical inactivity, though. How are you?
Good to see you a gain! As @aot said, I hope you're doing better.
How's life, Shera?

Yo, sorry for the super late reply.

Are you using hearing protection when you're out walking? Are you able to talk? Certainly gives me hope, that's for sure.

And I'm doing ok. All the craziness gets me down sometimes but I've been worse. Tinnitus and hyperacusis aren't any better or worse, save for a couple of short lived tinnitus spikes.

Also, I need a root canal. That should be fun.

This is really, really good to hear. I hope that T&H continue to get better and so does your pain.

No worries, my man. I'm not that responsive lately either. I still use earplugs when I go out as loud motorcycles always happen to pass by me when I leave the house, lol. I can talk as well!

Hmm, I'm afraid I can't give you any useful advice on the root canal. I guess the only thing you can do is try to be a bit optimistic. Save yourself the expectations of a bad outcome. Also, if you haven't already, talk to your dentist about your tinnitus/hyperacusis.
This is really, really good to hear. I hope that T&H continue to get better and so does your pain.
Thank you very much! Many ups and downs, but looking at the global trend---I sure have improved a lot. Here's to a brighter future :beeranimation:

Going to take some time off. Not feeling well and sight in left eye is almost gone from an inherited condition. Besides that, a little friend of wife and self has entered a children's hospital and he won't be coming home.
