Chit Chat and All That...

It really is quite simple in essence but way too difficult to explain for me. So no I can't enlightnen you:p

One thing of interest though is the current situation in Belarus. If the rioting continues, and Lukashenko doesn't reign it in, don't be surprised if Russia steps in.
Right you are. If riots continue from East (Khabarovsk) to West (Belarus), Putin will be next and I'm not going to be sad if that happens  Having an authoritarian leader is so not en vogue anymore.

Unfortunately, Putin knows that the protests will fizzle out with the bad weather, ie autumn. Sad, but true. This is why the police etc there haven't been heavy handed.

Do those in the US and elsewhere understand stones and pounds when talking about how much someone weighs? For example, I weigh 15 stone on the dot. Earlier this year I weighed 16 stone 7 pounds. I know those in the US use pounds, but do they get the stones?

The alternative politician in Belarus doesn't really have a platform and any vow that 'they' are democrats or move "towards the West" have been disasters or out of convenience.

Ukraine has an oligarch's puppet in the Presidency. These Eastern bloc's political arena just doesn't have compelling candidates and ironically are as bad as Western powers with their puppets and phony multi-party system.

No, not at all.

Well 1 stone= 14 pounds. Here's a bit of history - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_(unit)

Having lifted weights and lived abroad I know the stone and pounds system, the pounds system and the kilogram system by heart and can switch between whenever I want.

I weight 15 stone, which is 210lbs, whch is 95.25kgs.

The UK uses a mixture of old and new measurement systems, eg we still use miles, we use stone and pounds, we use litres and gallons, we use cm and metres, we use feet and inches and so on.

I must admit I know nothing about her, but you are right about the lack of compelling candidates.

Maybe not if these protests are getting funding by the usual culprits.

Ukrainians protested through imperfect conditions, didn't they?

The police haven't been heavy handed because everyone owns a smartphone now. If they lose their cool in frustration, a video will be on the 6 o'clock news somewhere.
Various protesters have alleged there has been violence or physical abuse by police. I assume that you will hear fabrication by both sides. Imho, there's no way to obtain a realistic report. One side is government-controlled and the other has their own ulterior motives probably funded by foreign interests and/or those who have their own agenda and I can bet dollars to donuts, it's not in the best interests of Belarusians.

@all to gain

What is your reason for living in Russia? Is it because your wife is originally from there?
Some 20 years ago I went on a trip to Moscow and St Petersburg and found the place very interesting. I wanted to learn a foreign language and the trip to Russia had made an impression on me, so in 2005 I went to Moscow to study Russian for 9 months. Inevitably, I met girls and then my future wife. The rest is history.

I've been wanting to leave for a number of years now as I want a better standard of life, am bored of the long winters, don't want my kids to grow up under Putin, I want my kids to have better opportunities and I want my kids to live a long time, i.e. men in Russia die on average at 67.

I have met many great people here, but, like everywhere, there are also a lot of not so great people. My living here has given me two great boys, a lovely stepdaughter and a beautiful wife, as well as a new language and a better understanding of how other people are looking at things.

I think we should start a new thread about geopolitics etc so as not to hog this thread or the US election thread. What do you think?

The protests in Russia will genuinely be down to annoyed Russians themselves. People have had enough of Putin.
The fact that everyone has a smartphone ultimately in neither here nor there. If push comes to shove, force will be used.

Like I said these latest protests in Russia are nothing to do with foreign intervention. In Belarus people are also fed up, but don't be surprised if both the Russians and the West are helping things along. It is in both of their interests, but Russia will prevail ultimately unless NATO takes military action, which it won't.

No more posts here about Russia from me. Let's start a different thread.

You can if you want. You're the only one I am interested in discussing it with even if we don't agree on everything.

You asked me why I started learning Russian? I answered "it doesn't matter" because of my tinnitus. I don't think I can learn a language now. I used headphones and Skype. It's so depressing to think about and I met lots of nice people. I don't want to explain what happened to me.

You posted that you moved to Russia and met your current wife there? I don't want to be nosy but one thing I was impressed with was how nice every girl I talked to was, well over 80%. Lots of different personalities so it gave a good idea of how different everyone is or at least illustrated how you can't assume everyone thinks the same.

Some Russians like Putin, some didn't, some were indifferent. Quite a few didn't want to talk about politics at all. I have some Ukrainian ancestry so I met Ukrainians too. I made a vk account but all of it is pointless now. I also thought it's not a popular foreign language (to learn) so that appealed to me too.
Oh well. :(

Yes, I met my wife here, but I didn't move here to find a wife LOL It's just the way things turned out. There are many nice girls the world over, I just happened to find one in Russia. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would live half my adult life here or have chidren born here.

I actually detest politics, but unfortunately it raises its ugly head sometimes.

So do you speak Russian or English to your wife? Also I hope this is not too rude to ask but what do you do as a job in Russia?

How do y'all deal with haircuts?

I just had one, and the lady was really nice but also an excitable talker. I didn't ask her to quiet down because I didn't want to be rude.

:confused: So frustrating. First a bad tinnitus morning now this.

Just had my hair cut, and I also had a talker. It didn't cause me any problems, but I was a little concerned that she was going to pull out a hairdryer. But she didn't. I only get my hair cut once every 6 months so I don't think about it much.

Take a book! When I read a magazine, they always talk to me. When I read a book, they don't :)

Might do that, thanks. A shame, since I like to talk.

Alternatively I might just wear my plugs and tell them they're Bluetooth or something. Considered doing that today actually. But I was too confident.

You could just tell them they are earplugs because you have Tinnitus and salons are loud -- Tinnitus isn't something you should feel embarrassed about :). Also, at least then you will be able to chat.

I hate chatting at the hairdressers lol, hence the book.

Less my tinnitus and more hyperacusis. Hyperacusis is so hard to explain and even my family thinks I'm crazy.
Thank you very much, though.

I wonder why that is? Magazine reading not intellectual and demanding enough? Maybe you look less serious when reading a magazine?

I think it's because you can both flick through a magazine and chat at the same time. But when you read a book, you have to give it your full concentration so they know you can't chat as well :)
