Solsaem Clinic (Dr. Minbo Shim) Experience

Hi John,

You still think this would be worth doing? I know you were a strong advocate of Dr. Shim at one point.

I've got noisy multipitch tinnitus and it's damned annoying to say the least. If it could be softened somehow that would be amazing. I've tried all sorts too.

I think Glenn wasn't overpleased with his results but did report a slight improvement?

Well, after this, and now a daily dose of curcumin, I am in a much much better place. There is no proof of the efficacy of this but I would be very interested to see other people try it out. I'd really like to see other doctors experiment with this and independently verify the results.

And yet you're now camping out on the Lenire thread (at least sometimes sounding enthusiastic). Doesn't sound like this had as much of a positive effect as you once suggested earlier.

How's your tinnitus nowadays, just wondering?

I just had a phone call with Dr. Shim Minbo 10 minutes ago and he seems very earnest to help. I was quoted $9000 and would have to be in Seoul for 2 weeks for the treatment.

He did however mention that sometimes the effects of the treatment are temporary whilst for some people it's permanent depending on the extent of hearing loss and age.

If I go through with this, I would have to fly into Seoul either next week or 2 weeks from now to begin treatment.

Intermittent, gone for most of the day. Very manageable. It's not a soul crushing burden that makes me want to die anymore. I think the PRP treatment has a lot to do with that but sadly I have no evidence. I'm sure he will even tell you that there are no guarantees so if you do approach this, do so with an open mind.

Even when it comes back is it quieter than before? I'm aware that there are no guarantees of a cure or even an improvement but seeing that you've improved I'd say significantly (80%), I'm willing to take a shot in the dark and go for the treatment despite the 9000 dollar cost.

It was so bad before that I couldn't even play with my son or do the dishes. Now it is only triggered when metal clangs loudly. I'd say it has reduced to about 1% or less than what it was.
Yeah so the improvements in my opinion are significant enough and worth trying out. I'm likely starting his treatment this coming Sunday or next Monday.

I've done a couple audiometries and none of them show any hearing loss which suggests that I may have hidden hearing loss. My tinnitus was livable up until last week when I developed hyperacusis, hearing distortions and 8 out of ten tinnitus.

I got mine from years of loud music followed by playing electric guitar on headphones too loud.

Is your tinnitus somatic? Can you modulate it from moving your jaw?

Why does somatic tinnitus matter John? I have this type of tinnitus...
Well, when it is somatic then the dysfunction seems to reside in the dorsal cochlear nucleus, not the cochlea or the hair cells. I wonder how PRP injectes into the middle ear could affect the dorsal cochlear nucleus. Unless the dysfunction that is present in the dorsal cochlear nucleus is driven by damage further up in the cochlea, then I am wondering how this therapy would affect that.

It developed about 3 months after the slap to my right ear. I can constantly pop my right ear and it makes a clicking noise when I do it sometimes. When I put pressure with my thumb on my neck behind my ear it manipulates it. When I yawn or burp and keep it inside and don't belch it out loud it makes a high pitched squealing noise in my right ear only.

I wonder if I have ETD too or just damage to my cochlea?

Remember they lump all kinds of tinnitus symptoms under ETD because they have no idea what they are doing.

Update:

I'm starting this treatment on September 1st and will be spending two weeks in Seoul. I understand that this might not be a complete cure for tinnitus but he has had cases of people going on remission in the past so there's hope. Besides a 50% improvement would still justify the cost in my opinion.

John, is this established? Is there any research backing this up? No Otologist mentioned this to me, they usually shrug off the somatic component as common but make nothing of it.

Well, isn't this the whole basis of Neuromod? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I wish you the best of luck, but man do I feel sad about the irrational things that tinnitus makes us do.

I don't know if you've requested multiple opinions from various doctors around you, but if you haven't it may be worth doing. Forget the money, it's your health that is at risk.

Again, good luck.

"I wish you the best of luck, but man do I feel sad about the irrational things that tinnitus makes us do."
What is irrational about this? Because the tinnitus gods haven't given it their blessing?
Honestly I feel sad for people like you that get sad about things they know nothing about.
"it's your health that is at risk."
Not really.

You should try other stuff before, that's my humble opinion.

JohnAdams, it seems like curcumin is working like a charm for you. And from what I've read on the forum it actually looks like it has more impact than Dr. Shim's therapy?
Also I am not sure you had a lot of improvement from Dr. Shim's therapy, same for GlennAz, right?

I would keep this stuff for a last chance treatment.
If you are going to do it anyway, I wish that it will work for you and gives you a lot of comfort, or even complete silence.

Keep us updated man.

I don't know, seems like I have. I was on curcumin before I went to Korea and although it was helping, and even taking me to near silence sometimes, I was never experiencing nearly as much silence every day as I am now.
It would be nice if I had more proof, which I have none.

Honestly, if someone wants to go and knows the risks, then isn't that good? If they come back and report no improvement then we will have more of an idea about the efficacy.

One thing that puzzles me is that this gets so much scrutiny and Neuromod doesn't. @Allan1967, who has been around and is trusted is saying it is spiking his tinnitus and the last trial's principal investigator works at the company, which seems like a conflict of interest to me. Also, that thread gets policed hard, and this one doesn't.

I don't know... I wish we all had more answers. I want to be healed 100% and play guitar loud and not be afraid of ruining my life all the time.

I was really hoping this would cure me, but it didn't.

I do understand the concern, but people are able and allowed to make their own choices and I'm definitely not misrepresenting my experience at all. It just makes me annoyed to see everyone talking to other people like they are children and need to be warned as if the people warning them somehow know something that they don't.

I think it's okay to warn people and give them our opinion as long as in the end they make their own choice.

As I said, I would personally try other things that have no side effects and are less expensive before trying South Korea.

For me it's like first trying a little medication then a big one.
And there is a lot between the two.
Allan should know about what's between before taking this decision.

But if he takes it, I will be 100% behind him and cross my fingers for him.

In the end we want the same thing, to help each other.

Please get an audiogram before you go, at Costco... anywhere. Then go to the same place many months after.

Good luck.
