Actually, we import most of our oil here in the US, and our reserves are astonishingly low. Commitments to the environment have had us shutting down many offshore oil wells for years, which I'm happy about. Speaking of oil, would the US or Russia or anyone be the least bit interested in what is going on in The Middle East if it weren't for the oil there? I doubt it.
Probably, none of us really knows what is happening in Ukraine/Russia. All I know is what is in the online newspapers, and we know they're not about to give their hands away by printing the truth. It's all about putting a spin on things in order to leave the other side(s) wondering.
I can understand Russia being concerned about being encircled by NATO countries. But it appears that it's been Russia's past aggressions that is responsible for this alliance being as large as it is. This war looks more like a territorial grab. It's difficult to remember that the US, Britain and Russia were all allies during WWII. It's also a little disturbing to note that nearly all the countries in the world have boundaries that were set by wars, not treaties.
Here in the US, the states of New Mexico and Texas once belonged to the Spanish. The state of Louisiana has been ruled by around 10 different countries in its history. This current war appears to be really about old grudges and communism vs capitalism, which has caused many different wars throughout history. I really should just stop reading about it because I can't do anything about it, and all of which I do know is questionable anyway. It reminds me of the time I was sitting in a Hawaii coffeehouse outside while someone next to us was reading a newspaper. They finally threw it down in disgust and said "I'm going back to worrying about whether the surf is up or not!"
