War in Ukraine — Megathread

If the West does not send troops, it does not indicate that Hersh was wrong, by suggesting that a discussion of this was likely. Calling him "This Hersh dude" speaks volumes about your knowledge of American journalism. In addition to his prestigious career as a reporter in investigative journalism, Seymour Hersh is the author of eleven books. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1970 for Investigative Reporting, for exposing the My Lai massacre and its cover-up during the Vietnam War. He has won a number of other awards, since then, for his reporting and his books.
I know about Seymour. You need to stop taking everything you read on the internet as gospel, like many great people are saying.

Nice to see that you are on a first-name basis with Seymour Hersh. He's just some old crank making money from lies. He can't be right, our government is 100% honest and transparent, correct?

In Ukraine, since hundreds of billions of dollars are being spent, innocent people are killed and massive destruction is taking place, there seems to be no point to this war, other than embezzlement and corruption, as it is likely that Russia will end up with a piece of Ukraine, regardless.

This is an update of an old song by Roger Waters, re-recorded in 2022, The Bravery of Being Out of Range:

Actually, we import most of our oil here in the US, and our reserves are astonishingly low. Commitments to the environment have had us shutting down many offshore oil wells for years, which I'm happy about. Speaking of oil, would the US or Russia or anyone be the least bit interested in what is going on in The Middle East if it weren't for the oil there? I doubt it.

Probably, none of us really knows what is happening in Ukraine/Russia. All I know is what is in the online newspapers, and we know they're not about to give their hands away by printing the truth. It's all about putting a spin on things in order to leave the other side(s) wondering.

I can understand Russia being concerned about being encircled by NATO countries. But it appears that it's been Russia's past aggressions that is responsible for this alliance being as large as it is. This war looks more like a territorial grab. It's difficult to remember that the US, Britain and Russia were all allies during WWII. It's also a little disturbing to note that nearly all the countries in the world have boundaries that were set by wars, not treaties.

Here in the US, the states of New Mexico and Texas once belonged to the Spanish. The state of Louisiana has been ruled by around 10 different countries in its history. This current war appears to be really about old grudges and communism vs capitalism, which has caused many different wars throughout history. I really should just stop reading about it because I can't do anything about it, and all of which I do know is questionable anyway. It reminds me of the time I was sitting in a Hawaii coffeehouse outside while someone next to us was reading a newspaper. They finally threw it down in disgust and said "I'm going back to worrying about whether the surf is up or not!"

Oil is a commodity. The US is the number two producer and consumer of oil. China and India are number one and number three consumers of oil, which reflects their increasing economic growth. In my opinion, we'll never solve the world wide oil addiction.

The other points you're trying to make are muddled and rambling.

The ECB is a disgrace for Europe: I imagine ECB president Christine Lagarde prefers that Europeans pay for the war in Ukraine, through inflation, through higher taxes... Lagarde should be sacked!

ECB warns Brussels against windfall levy on frozen Russian assets

The FSB must have been busy this weekend. I think Prigozhin and Wagner should re-read a bit on Russian history to anticipate how things are going to end....

Prigozhin demonstrated to the entire planet how poorly defended Russia is in general.

Putin's main argument against invading Russia is the nuclear arsenal. Ok that's great for deterring foreign armies from invading as Putin can strike their homelands.

But it does NOT deter internal groups from attempting to overthrow him; a candidate with SOME appeal can march right in and split the loyalty of at least SOME of Putin's supporters.

If Putin can't tell one side from the other as he stares around the room, his reaction will no doubt punish some of his loyalists as he attempts to prune out the traitors.

I expect right now everyone in a position of power is eyeing his superior wondering if the superior can be forced aside just by claiming that person is disloyal. And a superior must be looking at his own reports to discern which is gunning to move up.

This is how regime changes can happen. When it does happen, it will be swift and brutal. Putin is not as healthy as he once was. He needs to project as much strength as he can now, but the failures in Ukraine aren't helping. Pregozhin's little romp almost to Moscow has opened quite a few eyes at previously thought unassailable areas.

Maps in the Pentagon are being redrawn right now - not for the US to use, but perhaps for others to consider. The US will always respect the nuclear threat - but many others much closer to Putin may not be so concerned.

My take on the situation is Prigozhin made a high bet and lost. No one sided with him. Everyone sided with Putin.

Putin could have ordered an air raid on Wagner's column but did not want to create more internal turmoil in Russia.

Over time, Putin will take his revenge.

It is a good bet that Putin told Prigozhin his head would be the prime target for dozens of hitmen and snipers.

I am sure that did the trick.

There were 2,000 unarmed so-called insurrectionists on 1/6, and 1,000 went to prison. When 50,000 armed Wagner Group insurrectionists had an uprising in Russia, there was not a single arrest.

Makes you wonder.

Makes me wonder? Not really. Apples and oranges comparisons are not relevant.

Yessir, you're correct.

There doesn't seem to be much left of Russian civilization, only a facade that's clearly decaying.

I was communicating with a Russian woman who lives in Moscow. We met online. We exchanged video chats etc and daily messages.

After I expressed concern about the threat of the Wagner group, she suddenly sent me this message:

"The truth will be twisted. You will hear a lot of lies!!!"

Since that time we lost touch.

I think most Russians believe the news in the West about these things is all false.

For now I see Russia and Russians as futile to communicate with. Very few Russians living in the West are actually openly opposing the invasions - the bulk of them are silent but go on with their Russian festivals wearing traditional dress and serving blini with red caviar and kvass to drink in UK cities like nothing is happening.

Putin has made decisions for his country which will lead to 100 years+ of exclusion.

No ladno - Ruski liudee meera - oklichno! Molodyets!

Biden has a fantasy of being the reincarnation of FDR, so he is hoping for a WWIII to live it out.

Many people have already died due to his stupidity, and more no doubt will, but his supporters can only talk about Trump.

The US is the main beneficiary from the war in Ukraine: strong salary raises, it sells oil and gas to Europe at hefty prices (almost a robbery), keeps printing money like there's no tomorrow and the problem is passed on to foreign debt holders, strong real estate market, etc.

Of course within the US the main gains lie with rich people and many will have a hard time. But in other countries we are even worse off.

In Spain there weren't even salary raises and here, the main olive oil producer in the world, one litre of olive oil costs 9 euros now. They call it "inflation". I call it stealing.

And the blaming begins.

And the blaming begins.
It is totally justifiable to blame him for this situation. The current presidential administration is a disgrace - the most corrupt, and least competent, in over one hundred years.

Russia has seized the assets of Danone and Calsberg located in Russia. Irrespective of this, Russians keep doing business as usual in the EU and the US, and no one seizes their assets. For starters, Mikhail Friedman owns the DIA supermarket chain in Spain and the communist government of Pedro Sánchez did not move a finger to seize those assets, obtained with stolen money, with money that comes from corruption.

Pedro Sánchez did not seize the superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs either, which were moored at the Balearic Islands and also at Catalonian ports.

This is where the money of EU and US taxpayers is ending up:

Former Military Commissioner Of Ukraine's Odesa Region Detained (rferl.org)

Ukrainian investigators have detained Yevhen Borisov, the former military commissioner of the Odesa region, on charges of illegal enrichment, dereliction of duty, and evading military service. The State Bureau of Investigations and the Prosecutor-General's Office said on July 24 that Borisov was detained in Kyiv. Borisov was fired from the post last month after investigative reports said he and members of his family had bought property in Spain along with luxury automobiles worth $4 million at a time when Ukraine was battling invading Russian forces.

What a joke is Zelensky. Give up already, the fat lady has sung...

Why would they put all those ex cons back in prison? They have to feed and guard them.

Biden wants another 30 BILLION for the war. In the meanwhile the United States is falling apart before our very eyes. And of course the Congress will act in a bipartisanship manner and shovel the billions to their pets in the Nazi Azov battalion overnight.

With all due respect, you may be laboring under the impression that Biden can actually think. BlackRock's Mr. Fink is most likely the real president.

I think with a change in administration in the UK next year, we might well see British support for UK cut back.

The EU and USA won't pay out indefinitely.
