  • I'm wearing double hearing protection right now and my plugs keep popping out of my ears when I have muffs on. anyone else have this issue?
    Wrfortiscue
Are you rolling the plugs and inserting them while pulling the ear?
    kingsfan
Yea what kind of earplugs are you wearing? Sounds like they don't fit which will greatly diminish their protection.

Foam earplugs should be inserted deeply until only enough to barely pinch is protruding from the ear.
    Foamearplugssuck
@kingsfan @Wrfortiscue nah these are custom musician's plugs, so no rolling required. foam earplugs don't fit my ear canals unless I cut them in half. I usually use custom musicians plugs which fit better, but overall still not the best. may be something to do with the way my muffs fit? This issue definitely worsens when I'm wearing them.
I need help.....fire alarm went off in my tiny studio apartment and I think it gave me a setback....someone please reassure me I'm so scared
    Foamearplugssuck
@kingsfan yeah and it's not like I severely burnt my meal either. was wearing muffs and plugs by sheer chance, but the alarm ripped right through them. It was a bit longer than I few beeps and I've have some pain since. going to be extra quiet/cautious for the next few weeks.
    ZFire
You did all the best you can honestly. This is likely a minor setback if anything. That was really nice of your neighbor too
    Foamearplugssuck
@ZFire thanks man. definitely more sensitive but nothing too bad yet. and yeah my neighbor literally saved my life. I could not be more thankful.
where's the best place to live with hyperacusis? cities are loud, suburbs are loud, rural is too isolated for me....guess I'll die?
apartment hunting with hyperacusis is an absolute nightmare
    kingsfan
It makes finding an apartment extra difficult too. I had to turn down a place I really loved all because the A/C was too loud.

Everything with hyperacusis is like life on expert mode
    Foamearplugssuck
@kingsfan yeah the a/c and radiator situations worry me when looking at new places. it sucks.
god it seems like everyone on here is also experiencing some kind of hellish spike...must be something in the water

I'm imagining a bunch of people wearing peltor muffs enthusiastically dancing in a high school cafeteria before breaking down sobbing because the torment is too much

My Morse code sound (most unbearable) of them all started back up on Thursday! Might have been sound induced from not wearing my ear plugs tho.
on day 3 of an insane T spike right now and just found out about oto-313. day is off to a fantastic start. lol.
I'm so fucking sick of dealing with this shit that I'm considering going to med school to figure out how to treat H my own damn self.
    Foamearplugssuck
@Damocles this is great news bc I am scientifically inept
    SamRosemary
I'm in the middle of my nursing program and if I manage to make it through while dealing with this I hope I can somehow help our community. Maybe with some nursing research.

Was thinking the same thing the other day...studied climate change policy thinking I'd help the world. Regretting I didn't do neuroscience instead.
today marks my one year hyperacusis anniversary! any suggestions on how I should celebrate? (other than throwing myself off of a roof)
    Leila
Do something you normally wouldn't do / permit yourself to do. Go get that CD, or book, or have that burger or piece of cake you otherwise wouldn't have - life is hard enough as it is, so do something that brings you joy and makes you feel good!
    sakrt
My earlier post was a silly thought of something simple at the moment (not to be snide). Agree with @Leila too! ((hugs))
    Damocles
Treat yourself to a nice game of chess (against yourself).

Just don't knock over any of the pieces, or set them down on the board too hard. (˵ ͡o ͜ʖ ͡o)
haven't been on here since I had a concussion and couldn't look at screens very much. any medical miracles that I should know about?
literally having the mosts insane T spike right now and it came out of nowhere.....wtf is going on
    ZFire
How you doing bro? Settle down for u?
    Foamearplugssuck
@ZFire yeah calmed down, very slowly throughout the day. it was super weird but I'm glad it's gone....for now.
why does my laptop fan sound like an aggressive airplane fighting to take off
    ZFire
Hyperacusis sucks. Idle trucks with their engines running sounded like that for me too. Maybe they still do.
    Wrfortiscue
Yeah it's the fan going into hyperdrive from the heat lol
    kingsfan
MacBook Pro user. I feel your pain. Moving to an M1 processor once I get a new job.
Does anyone here have blackout curtains, and do they help block out noise? If so, does anyone have any brand recommendations?
    makeyourownluck
I don't know what brand mine are, but I took them apart and stitched duvets in between the layers, they block out sound pretty well (for curtains).
    kingsfan
Try and get a blackout curtain rod as well. They curve around the window so the curtain touches the wall.
my apartment is much louder than I remember......should I wear earplugs while I sleep? I don't want to overprotect.....
    kingsfan
Is it loud from the environmental sounds outside, impulse sounds from outside, or just generally echoing and such inside?
    Foamearplugssuck
@kingsfan external/impulse sounds. construction, sirens, people blasting music, etc. plus my fridge humming in my apartment 24/7
I understand the utility of ambulances. truly I do. but why must they be so. goddamn. motherfucking. earsplittingly. loud.
    Shelbylynn
They're even louder in downtown city areas because the way the buildings echo everything. Where I live it isn't too bad unless you're outside/next to it or downtown.
    Foamearplugssuck
@Shelbylynn oh that's interesting! didnt know that. I live downtown as well which probably explains it....
my parents are getting renovations done, so I'm camping out in my apartment in the city. haven't been since I got H. It's weird. and sad.
My cousin is visiting today and I'm going to be forced to interact with him. Thoughts and prayers are appreciated during this trying time.
    Steph1710
    Foamearplugssuck
@Steph1710 thanks! my cousin is 21 lol so not a kid. It was my first social interaction since getting H and I was in panic mode. ears seem to be relatively fine for now.
my jaw has a mild burning sensation going on rn and it's freaking me out so much. definitely H related and I have no idea what caused it.
tempted to show my therapist this hellsite so I dont have to explain why H is so isolating and why its hard to get treatment every damn week
    Damocles
I've referred several doctors, therapists and an entire court of law, to TT, just to give them an idea of how much tinnitus ISN'T what they imagine it is.
    Rockman
Everyone I know it doesn't bother them. So they think everyone is the same
sometimes, I get overwhelmed by the potential that T/H has robbed from me. What would I have accomplished if my ears weren't glass?
