Okay - here goes.
In the 1970s I played some gigs with blues singer George Melly. One such gig came up in a jazz club in Camberley Surrey.
The band was Brian White's Magna Jazz Band, supporting George Melly, a very risqué, camp performer, who was bisexual.
He turned up wearing a well cut dark suit, under which he wore a T-shirt, reading:
'2 into 1 does go.'
The excitement was that he would be introducing a mystery guest.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to a wonderful young lady whom you will never have heard of. Here she comes now."
A gorgeous young woman was threading her way through the crowd from the back of the room.
Bright red stilettos, pale blue jeans, and a baggy grey sweater that obscured nothing, as everything inside it moved beautifully as she sashayed up to the stage. (See - guys notice things like that.)
"Ladies and gentlemen - Miss Bett Midler.
In a short space of time her name will be on everybody's lips."
She sang a couple of numbers, but the only one I can actually remember is, "Hard Hearted Hearted Hannah, the Vamp from Savannah."
She would hardly have noticed me, I was just the guy playing trombone behind her, admiring the 'cut of her jib.' (physical attributes.)
As she left the stage everything moved beautifully again (calm down Hewett for god'sake!)

"How about that ladies and gentlemen
- like two weasels in a sack!"
