I Invented a Sound That Knocked Out My Tinnitus

@R. David Case

Someone suggested I take a look at this thread. I had always thought it was a scammer's thread due to the first page or two of posts. For all I know it still may be, but as quite a few members of the forum are saying good things and because I am desperate I feel it is worth a try.

Will it work for me? No idea! Will it make things worse? Again, no idea! Maybe I am falling for this hook, line and sinker, but at pretty much zero cost I have little to loose that hasn't already been lost. I am prone to side effects though so I am very concerned about this.

I know you have probably gone over this multiple times in the thread, but I can't bring myself to read 60+ pages, so could you lay out exactly what I need to buy, what I need to do, pitfalls, how to keep headphones on all night and so on? The more precise and thorough you can be the better as I have a perfectionistic mindset that always wants to ask more questions. So if you could outline it in bullet points it would be most useful.

My tinnitus was brought on most likely by an ototoxic drug or two and maybe stress helping them do their dirty deed. This was then made worse by an MRI and maybe other sound related events. I have a high pitched piercing whining noise in both ears. I am 5 months into my tinnitus journey.

I used to love silence and would sleep in silence; even a ticking clock would annoy me. I have tried sound enrichment at night, but I always end up switching it off as it annoyed the hell out of me. I just felt that I was swapping my tinnitus sound for another annoying sound. Any sound is annoying for me. So I think your 'sound treatment' will be very hard for me to stomach.

Day 8 - Yesterday I took the Koss headphones / ear pieces out of the headpiece and sewed a closure inside a knit headband to secure them. It made it much more comfortable. The headphones stayed in place right on my ears and I could sleep on my side if I wanted. I can't believe I got 7 full hours of sleep while listening to the sounds. It might have partly me catching up on sleep after some bad nights but now it will be easier to do the program, going forward. And I think that my tinnitus is a little quieter today.

Believe it or not I have had one other person experience twitching when using Tinnitus Mix, it was more than you describe but IT IS A GOOD SIGN. As Tinnitus Mix works on awakening neurons, they make and break connections as brain chemistry returns to normal. That process does cause skin sensations and twitching in about 1% of those that have HAD POSITIVE RESULTS, BUT IT GOES AWAY after using Tinnitus Mix as recommended.

She was a severe case and she got many benefits after a few weeks.
Thank you so much for this reply. I was tempted to try Tinnitus Mix again but was not sure because of the twitching and the risk of it becoming permanent. I'm probably going to carefully give this another go then. Will report my results here obviously.

Sure, you want to get used to the sounds first in day for 1 hour first day, 2 hours second day, etc. using Koss KTX-PRO1 headphones. Then switch to all night every night for 3 weeks. You can cut back then to once or twice a week after tinnitus leaves. Since you have only had tinnitus for 5 months you could see results faster than someone that has had tinnitus for 20 years, people with reactive tinnitus or hyperacusis should start with headphones 2 inches in front or behind ears because of sensitivity. There has never been any permanent side effects in 18 years, some do get temporary spike, if so lower volume, very few get skin sensations or twitching as Tinnitus Mix goes to war with your tinnitus, those will fade as you complete sound therapy.

GOOD SIDE EFFECTS:
1) eliminates or greatly reduces tinnitus, clicking sounds, and stops vibrations felt by many around the world
2) after a week puts you in longer deeper higher quality sleep
3) gives clarity of mind, increases cognitive ability (removes brain fog)

Update:

Day 2: Only could sleep about 4.5 hours on the second night because I had to wake up at 3:30a and fly to the midwest for a meeting, then turning right around and fly back. So I didn't listen to the Tinintus Mix much that night, and my day was a stressful mess. Woke up to a 3/10 tinnitus. Tinnitus was all over the boards, definitely a 6 or 7 /10 by end of day, but what can you expect with no sleep and a major hustle. It was also a fasting day, and I'm still jet lagged from my transcontinental odyssey two days prior. Sidenote: The Boeing 717 is criminally loud!

Day 3: Due to Day 2, I crashed hard for 12 hours and had Tinnitus Mix on whole time. Woke up to a much more buzzing / humming tinnitus than tonal. I've been seeing the tones wash away over the last week or so - my shaky little warbler in my right ear feels further and further away. Although the electrical-field-choral-hum is definitely present en mass, filling my entire head. The super high pitch annoyances seem to be fewer and farther between. Tinnitus is definitely changing a lot over the past few days.

I'll keep going with this Tinnitus Mix experiment. Let's see what happens.

I am using Bose headsets for this, but I too ordered the Koss headset, mainly because I think my big giant sleeping head is ruining these nice headphones.

One thing I can say for sure, is that my sound sensitivity / hyperacusis is completely gone. I believe Tinnitus Mix helped a lot for that. For this I am grateful.
That is great that Tinnitus Mix is helping you!! Don't skip a night or the tinnitus will try to reform!

Thanks for the answer. What volume should I have the player set on to begin with?

I give up... that iPad app to play Tinnitus Mix I am using has a volume independent of the iPad control... just got a full blast shot of static into both ears until I threw the Koss headphones off...

Now I am probably worse... so be careful with headphones, even with Tinnitus Mix... feeling like I can't win these days.

This has happened to me before, do not stress it will not cause lasting damage. Also, Koss has a volume adjuster on the actual device, you can set this to low to avoid something like this happening again.

It takes time and every person is different, I have had some take much longer than 3 weeks, but on average that is the recommendation.
I am on night (3) and to date no significant change to my very loud and intrusive noise. I hope this changes and I am not trying to be negative; just merely updating on my progress.

God bless you my friend. I will pray for you.

That's why the Koss has a volume control on cord, you turn it all the way down, then turn your player on then adjust slowly up with the cord volume control and that will never happen.

Except the Koss KSC75 has no volume control.
Even though they are recommended as well, this is a good example of getting used to the headband of the Koss KTX Pro1 over the KSC75's. :)

Also a good argument against any in-ear buds which can be "9db louder" for a given setting. I also found there is a music limiter on iOS devices (I'm always a day late and a dollar short.)
I'd rather listen to this mix than "rain" or "jungle noises."

I'll just start my 3 weeks over, and prednisone for Thanksgiving... yummy.

This is exactly why I advise agaisnt headphone use in general. Sorry to hear that happened to you. This is also a good reason that the direction computers are going is bad. The ability to control the user experience is going down the toilet with iOS and Android apps.

I just finished night 12. Still have a little HF tinnitus that actually disappears a few hours at a time. It is becoming easier to sleep to that's for sure.
My ears are getting used to being sore wearing the headphones... yeah I have been using my little MP3 player and the battery was going dead... so "I'll just plug into the iPad" lol. Oops

A little tightness and fullness in the right ear, taking some prednisone... had to go doctor shopping to get any more than a 5 dose pack. The tinnitus level is still loud.... but not louder, thank goodness. I'm sure my hyperacusis made it seem worse... but I'm getting resigned that this is my new baseline... and there's nothing but to deal with it.

A few times I have removed the headphones and... gee... the tinnitus seems there... but is it????? Then 10 seconds later, there it is. I think I get used to the screeching and when I take them off it takes 10 seconds for my brain to catch up.

Are you playing yours on some kind of speaker then?

@R. David Case

Gonna give this a shot. I have lingering hyperacusis which may be from residual PTSD from a car accident. Putting the volume on the lowest possible setting does not cause pain, so I assume this to be safe in my individual case, unless hyperacusis is completely contraindicated for this treatment.

I'm 4-5months in with my tinnitus. The low whirring sound that was present immediately after my accident I had mistaken for an actual crane during the construction months in summer (it sounds strangely distant to the ear and is not so bothersome that it caused any sort of panic). Hyperacusis was immediately present upon airbag deploy. It was only one month and a day later that the HF tinnitus hit and woke me up in the middle of the night. This tone is the main source of my misery, as it sounds like an electric hiss inside of my head. Not as peripheral as the first, but still feels unilateral (left).

The reason I mention this is because you've indicated that this treatment might be even more effective for sub-chronic cases. I have been using LLLT (konftec 808nm) to address my issues as well. Do you think compounding therapies here would be counterproductive in any way? Do you think that the "energy supply" theory is compliant with or crucial to the "awakening neuron" theory?

Thanks so much for your time.

The file for download only goes to 1:15 on my iPhone. How are you guys stretching this to play all night?
Several posts up I posted a video (#1893) how to download multiple files to the iPad... (that app is the app I had my volume difficulty with... be careful...)
I personally bought a $30 MP3 player that I (usually) can put in my t-shirt pocket so I'm not tethered to anything.

I've had my headphones on for 8 hours today, no family laughed at me as far as I know :-0 at the very least... it's a good masker... thankful for Mr. Case.

Interesting, even after just the introductory hour my high frequency tinnitus has been knocked out for longer than it ever has been. Probably extended residual inhibition. I've had this for 45 seconds or so post mega curcumin dosing, but never for 5-10 minutes like this.

For what it's worth, I used my Konftec lasers at the same time I was doing the Tinnitus Mix therapy at the start of this year, for a couple of months. I didn't seem to notice any ill effects. I do remember one time where I used the laser 10 minutes after using the sound file and then it seemed to spike my tinnitus pretty bad. But it settled down in a few hours I believe, though even that could have been a coincidence. I will add that the sound was at a very low volume. For those months, most of the time I used my laser mid day and Tinnitus Mix only during sleep and I was fine. But still, I'd be very interested to hear what @R. David Case has to say about your question.
