Taurine and Tinnitus

Here is an extensive TT thread regarding a possible link between toothpaste for sensitive teeth and tinnitus:

https://www.tinnitustalk.com/threads/potassium-nitrate-ouch.717/

It occurs to me only now that my tinnitus started around the time I began using Sensodyne three or more years ago. Who knows if there is a causal connection? And if there is, can the effects be reversed upon switching to regular toothpaste? Perhaps I'll conduct the experiment and report back!

I am actually taking taurine 2gm now a day as it increases bile flow; to help eliminate excess copper/fluoride. I have been on this, glycine, iv glutathione and nac for about 2 weeks, and am noticing my t is a lot quieter..and im a lot less bothered by it.

@DebInAustralia

That is an interesting cocktail! It is a bit hard, however, to be sure which supplement (or combination of supplements) is giving you the relief. Of the bunch, I am most intrigued by NAC.

I should mention that I did switch to an all natural toothpaste (with Fluoride but without Potassium Nitrate) since my post of May 9 (above). I have experienced no noticeable difference in tinnitus (which is what I expected).

hi Golly

I am currently undertaking a nutritional balancing program for my copper retention, which I knew about long before the onset of my t.

Ironically, many of the supps I am taking are recommended for t.

I am particularly interested in NAC because it is a precursor to Glutathione. I have established that my glutathione levels are depleted (using a functional liver detox profile test) following the administration of IV ciprofloxacin at the end of last year. I am sure you know glutathione is the mother of all antioxidants. I am sure that the onset of my t is due to oxidative stress and injury.

I will continue with weekly iv glutathione, daily nac, taurine and others mentioned, and let you know how I get on in a little while if you are interested in this approach.

I will say that the NAC has definitely helped with the blocked feeling in my right ear. I have heard of others feeling nac helps with this symptom. Interesting!

That sounds like a good plan @DebInAustralia. Please keep me (us) informed as to your progress. I wish you the best of luck!

NAC seems interesting. I am currently only taking 100mg of magnesium a day.

The only thing I'm worried about is making my T worse. I know my ears are sensitive to meds... did anybody report spikes with NAC?

Found this of interest, will write this down in my Tinny (tinnitus ) note book I keep handy to any tips that come along, then in turn pass them on to locals who have this condition as we do,but have no comp for help.
Thanks Debbie,I have a cousin on Bribie Island ,and friend in Mandurah.coming in for your winter now.Waiting for Wimbledon (tennis ) to start then know summer is here.

@ampumpkin: I haven't read of any reports of NAC worsening t...I have IV glutathione weekly which doesn't cause a worsening of my t either. Remember your body naturally produces glutathione. It is a naturally occurring antioxidant. If you want to try boosting your glutathione levels but concerned about nac effects, maybe considering increasing your consumption of foods containing glutathione and exercising (will increase your bodie's stash of glutathione)

@Marlene: Love Bribie Island. lovely place. Never been to Marundah. Where are you from Marlene?

Hi I'm in southern England, my cousin emigrated to Aussie in the 60s, came home twice in all that time, yes it looks lovely place Bribie,he's happy. My friend moved out 7 yrs ago with her family, they became Aussie citizens about 3 yrs ago ,she's visited home once ,they're doing okay.
We were moving to La Rochelle in France, all systems go till I got health issues following a virus, not meant to be I suppose, that's life.Swings and Roundabouts,as we say.

I was thinking of trying some taurine too. A Dr. posted on a TMJ forum in response to a tinnitus thread that taurine has been shown to help with tinnitus and hearing in animals.

I don't have high hopes, but I could try.

@applewine Did you ever try it and, if so, how much? For most conditions, taurine has been studied in a range of 2 to 6 grams in into two or three doses. But I don't know the dosage for tinnitus. See this for information on taurine dosage for various conditions.

I wonder if there are interactions with Lorazepam and Taurine, as they both work on gaba. Anyone know? Or is there a reputable site to find out such things? Cheers.

Took Taurine on the recommendation of a friend. Wish I hadn't. Be very careful with some of these supplements if you are also on anti depressant or anti anxiety meds such as benzos. They interact. Now, as a result, I have had a new high pitched squeal for days after just taking 1,500mg Taurine over 2 days. Talk to a good doctor or pharmacist first!!!

Hi people!I'm new here and new with tinnitus.I saw this title"alternative"so I came here first...I like alternative much better and trust it more...I got my tinnitus 6 days ago and it's driving me crazy already...especially because I'm a singer and a can't hear all the tones wright,I hear them but incorrectly. My doctor think that I got tinnitus becouse my blood pressure was high(assumption)...I tought that it will go away when it's reduced, but the buzz in my left ear continue...When you remove the cause,it should stop...or not?I have so many medical problems and this is only the top of the iceberg so I can't know what causes tinnitus(I haven't see any specialists yet) but I just can accept that there is no cure for this!!!(so i read about it)..Any advice? Some alternative method?Maybe acupuncture?Herbs?Vitamins?Help please...TNX
PS...Sorry for my language mistakes..I'm from Croatia,Europe

Hi, I've tried Taurine and it is the only thing that has helped mine. It does not get rid of it, it only muffles the noise and makes it less high pitched, but as you know, for a tinnitus sufferer even a slight help is a godsend. I am 26 and mine is not due to hearing loss. So, I would keep that in mind for anyone using Taurine for the tinnitus. I do not know how it would aid someone who has the T due to hearing loss.

So far, Taurine seems to really be helping me but of course it's very hard to say. I think 1 gram lasts for maybe 4 hours. I am wondering what is the maximum safe dose, so far I haven't been going above 3 grams a day. I'm considering trying to take 2 grams before bed in the hope that it lasts through the night.

I've been using taurine for a few days now. I have it in powder form, mixed with water...Oddly enough, it's tasteless so it's just like drinking water with nothing added. Does seem to soften the tinnitus intensity.

With you every supplement you try seems to be reducing tinnitus intensity... Cats's claw, phenibut...

I truly wish it would all cure me, sadly not. I've tried a lot more supplements which have done nothing for me like vinpocetine. Cats claw, I'm undecided about that one really. Phenibut did work, but I'm no longer taking it.

Yeah, not surprising that it worked since it's practically a benzo; good on you for ditching it. I've seen some absolute horror stories about that stuff.

RE: taurine... I took large doses of it for several weeks (7-10g per day); I cannot say with any certainty that it did anything at all besides marginally reduce my checking balance.

Thanks ^_^. I seen the horror stories scared me off it. Shocked it's not been banned yet.

Stuff like 2C-E and 25i-NBOME which are a hell of a lot more potent and ridiculous than phenibut, didn't get banned until some kids actually showed up in the morgue. We live in a weird era; it's much easier to develop and market new psychoactive compounds than it is to test or regulate them.
