  • I went to see Wicked with 3 kids. I wore my earplugs and just Sony headphones. I didn't wear the headphones for most of the movie until the end. It was fun, no issues with being too loud except for one or two scenes. I just put the headphones on.
Hope you all are doing well! I just started my 4th year teaching college and hopefully, I'm working on the last year of my dissertation!
    BrOKeN_1
Well enough. Glad to see you pushing through and continuing to live to the best of your ability. Good luck with finalizing your dissertation :)

@twa I need to undergo an oral surgery. A cyst in the upper roof of my mouth needs to be removed. They will be sedating me. After that I will need to take antibiotics as well as pain killers. Did you too take either of these post your surgery? If yes, what was the impact on H/T ?
    twa
@Heal82 I took antibiotics, I believe and pain meds for a week. I don't remember them causing issues, but I did develop dizziness that I'm still dealing with 6 months out.
Hi, Twa I saw a comment you made about plantar fasciitis. I also think I have just wondering did you get better and how did you treat it?
    R
Do you work a demanding job or stand long hours? I used to stand for like 10 hours but I'm also flat footed.
    twa
@Rich123 I got in when I started walking in regular shoes instead of tennis shoes. I focused on calf stretches, rolling my foot with a ball while watching tv, took Turmeric with curcumin and black pepper and did an anti-inflammatory diet. It was bad for a long time, but got much better. I'm really careful about shoes now. I do not wear heels or walk in anything, but tennis shoes.
    cjbhab
@Rich123 I work an office job , but I run and walk a lot. i've run 1500 KM this year so that is the main contributor. It is excruciatingly painful when i wake up in the morning and i can't put any weight on it. but after 10-15 mins it becomes okay.
I'm one week out from surgery. T/H have been stable. I've had some lower T with the extra sleep I've been getting by recovering at home.
    twa
I try to watch my dairy intake, I massage my ears every night and I take anti-histamines.
    Heal82
Hi @twa, What kind of antihistamines do you take ? Benadryl or Hydroxyzine ? And how much ? How long have you been taking them? Did you notice any impact on your Tinnitus due to anti-histamines ?
    twa
I was taking one called Genexa that had diphenhydramine. I stopped taking it though because it can contribute to Alzheimer's.
I had my surgery yesterday. My doctors let me wear my earplugs in surgery & hand brace. All went well, waiting for pathology. T/H are same.
How did the surgery go? Did your T worsen? Did you wear earplugs during the surgery?
    twa
@Jupiterman my surgery is the 29th. They postponed it for a few weeks. I'm planning on wearing earplugs. I'll let you know how it goes. :-)
    twa
Hi @Jupiterman I had surgery a week ago and I'm home recovering. Everything went well. The dr let me wear my earplugs. I did not notice a change in T/H.
Stay calm. You will be fine. Wear some earmuffs on the plane. Your surgery will be fine as well. Coming out of the anesthesia and having surgery is big, but you are a pro and you got this. Breathe
    twa
@Daniel Lion thanks so much. They postponed my surgery for two weeks, thank you for the encouragement. I'm trying to stay calm.
Has anyone flown with hyperacusis and tinnitus? I have not flown since I've acquired H & T. My ears usually stop up when flying.
    AfroSnowman
I have, quite a bit. My hyperacusis is mild to moderate and my tinnitus reactive. I just use hearing protection and fly. It worsens things for a while (a day or two) but what are you going to do?
    twa
@AfroSnowman good to hear from you. I used to fly quite a bit to travel and to conferences for work. The last time I flew was 6 years ago to Florida. Honestly, I still struggle with my hyperacusis, especially like music at church or loud restaurants. I feel badly that my family cannot fly places for vacations because of my condition.
I need surgery in the next 2 weeks. I have hyperacusis & wear earplugs outside. Anyone had surgery with hyperacusis? Any concerns?
    twa
@Andrew40 I'm having surgery for another issue. My concern is wearing the earplugs during surgery and tinnitus level after. I'm not sure the type, I have tinnitus 24/7 and it does change sounds. The hyperacusis is better at times, but always there with loud sounds.
    sakrt
Certain types of anesthesia can worsen ear symptoms if you're also being intubated. Are you concern about sound or the chemicals involved?
    twa
I will probably be intubated. I know I will be fully sedated.
Went to the dr yesterday and need surgery within the next two weeks for a female issue. I have hyperacusis and tinnitus.
Has anyone tried an SSRI or St. John's Wort that did not cause an increase in T?
    twa
Thanks guys! Did they help you?
    cjbhab
i was considering st. john's wort for a bit when i was going through a dark time. I never could bring myself to try it. It is still sitting on my shelf. report back if you do try it.
    kingsfan
Haven't found an SSRI that doesn't make mine worse. Gabapentin helps though, as long as I stay below a certain threshold, but as tolerance builds it seems I need more and more so I usually cycle taking it.
Has anyone found a quieter MRI machine? I was supposed to get a MRI over a year ago, but have not found a quieter machine.
Does anyone know of a quieter juicer or cold press for making juices?
    crescentsky
I brought a Blendjet after T and was told it was between 50-60 at lab tested. I have not tried testing the sound, but it is defintely much quieter than my Blendtec (sounds like a rocket every time I use it). I also have an Omega juicer which I think is also quieter than my Blendtec.
Today is my 3rd anniversary. This week I went to the state fair w/o fear of loud sounds. I am on vacation with my family. It gets better.
    GG_Ear
Wow that's amazing. Congrats on your improvement.
    Utdmad89
I'm really happy for you, and hope to get to the same place oneday!
    twa
Thank you friends! My husband's loud voice is still too loud, but I just put my earplugs in. I wear musician's earplugs outside the house, but life is much more normal.
Ear was hurting yesterday & it was bright red the day before. Storms all night & the ear pain subsided. Barometric pressure once again!
    Mo8409
That's crazy! How's winter time for you?
    AfroSnowman
I live in the mountains. Elevation change sets mine off
    twa
@Mo8409 winter seems to be ok, although my arthritis gets bad and I'm really stiff. @AfroSnowman we used to travel to the mountains every January and I had issues with my ears stopping up, but that was years before my current ear issues.
There's going to be a national emergency test tomorrow. All electronic devices will emit an alarm. I set my alarm to put my earplugs in.
    H
Standing in coffee shop this morning at work the fire alarm drill went off. I of course had ear plugs in but it was so damn loud. I swear it lasted minutes but probably in reality only lasted 30 seconds. Loud! Hopefully I've escaped a further spike
I am starting my 3rd year teaching with tinnitus & hyperacusis. I'm finishing up classes in my doctoral program in 2 weeks! Hang in there!
    H
You are one strong lady! Xx
    GG_Ear
How do you teach with hyperacusis? Do you have to wear earplugs? Thank you :)
    twa
@GG_Ear sorry for the delay, almost a year to respond! I do wear ear plugs while teaching, it doesn't bother me. I don't even notice the sound difference anymore.
hi, saw some of ur comments and i wanted to ask u what caused it all for u? also if u have H what were ur initial symptoms and did u have sensitive hearing even before onset?
    E
wow thats really inspiring to hear! how were u able to live w it? and what were/are ur H symptoms?

i'll add that i'm struggling with knowing if i have it or not so i'm isolating from loud noises/earphones just in case but i suffer from severe anxiety and fear of noxacusis
    twa
@Ellaenchanted868 thank you! I tried my best to focus on my goals and not to think about it. I had severe sound sensitivity. I had burning or sizzling feeling in my ears. I also had muffled hearing, headaches and tinnitus. My husband's footsteps were too loud at first. I could barely watch tv. I wear earplugs outside the house anywhere I go. It got better over time.
    E
i'm glad to hear you're doing better! it gives me hope
Please give your recommendations for comfortable headphones (earmuffs) for protection to wear over earplugs. I'd like to go to a movie.
    Joshua Macleod
Hi @twa 3M Peltors are very comfortable and help attenuate another 10 dB on top of ear plugs. What movie would you like to see?
    twa
@kingsfan I have musician's earplugs, I'm not really sure the nrr. I think I remember reading +/-27. @Joshua Macleod I'm not sure, I wanted to try to take my son. We used to go to the movies every week before my hearing issues in 2020 and the pandemic. He wanted to see the Barbie movie with a friend that's a girl, it's supposed to be sensory friendly.
    twa
Visited a new church today. The church and people were great. Still loud music and the pastor's message was loud at times. Sigh.
    ECP
@Jammer During the pandemic, many churches began live-streaming their services on Zoom. If you're interested, you could remotely attend churches all over the world. The only downside is that the social aspect would be missing. (It's a tough call, I know. Being online isn't very social, but I do love the ability to lower the volume and hit "mute" whenever I want.)
    SarahMLFlemmer
I skip "worship" and only stay for the sermon since gaining tinnitus. I put my finger in my ear if it gets too loud.
    twa
It makes it difficult, but I have found some work arounds. I stay in the lobby/foyer until the music is over. In my usual church I go to the Living Room and watch it on the tv. I'll keep working on it. I refuse to give up.
The distortion has gotten better. I've been taking antihistamines & Mucinex to keep a handle on fluid in the ears. I'm also avoiding dairy.
Hi @twa ! Did you have or have hyperacusis? I have been reading your posts, that you experienced headaches?
    twa
Yes, I began having hyperacusis in 2020 at the same time I had an acoustic event and also tinnitus. I had tinnitus the 3 years previous, but it was so very minor, like cicadas. After the event, when the hyperacusis and tinnitus became loud, I started getting headaches. Lately, I've had headaches every day, but I look at my log and they had stopped for a while.
Seems like when I'm having hearing issues, the family decides to misbehave. The 10 year old acts better than the hubby!
What I think I miss most about all of this is listening to music, going to concerts and to the movies.
    Leila
Same here. Listening to music at a volume that can easily be drowned out by a passing car isn't really what listening to music ought to be like. Though, I'm grateful for my ears to have improved to the point I'm capable of listening to any artificially created noises without pain once again :)
    S
I will always miss my headphones. Although I wish I had never touched them as I would not be here now. What's done is done. :)
Has anyone had dysacusis that resolved?
    TheCapybara
@twa For both of us! How long have you had it twa? And did it get a bit better in that time?
    twa
@TheCapybara I'm dealing with inflammation in my right ear. I had a pretty stressful end of school and several nights with little sleep. I noticed my hyperacusis was worse and then I woke up this week with the high pitched flute when my son or a woman talked. I'm trying to get better rest and taking antihistamines. The flute sound got better, but I still feel pressure.
    S
I still get random beeps over sounds that flares up on and off over 13 months since it began. No idea the triggers. Came back this time I think because of tmj or from fork dropped onto tile floor that radiated noise so loud I flinched. @twa
I woke up this morning and noticed a whistle or flute every time someone spoke in a higher pitch, like a women's voice or my young son.
Went to a Renaissance festival today. There were some loud sounds, but not too bad. It was nice to see people out and about after 3 years.
    Leila
Sounds like you've had a lovely outing. I love that you don't let your tinnitus hold you back!
