Most public sculptures in the west until modern abstract sculpture came about often depicted generals, leaders, kings the ruling elite. Some were murderers and tyrants whose image were put in bronze to reinforce their power and ideologies. Be it Stalin, Idi Amin, or Saddam Hussein or king Leopold I Belgium. His troops would put dynamite sticks into Africans asses when celebrating Bastille day. I understand the anger and compulsion to bring specific symbols down just like the confederate flag and generals who fought for maintaining the slave system. I find these symbols hurtful and threatening and I am not a descendant of slaves. Can you imagine being black and have to see those symbols on government buildings or other places in your everyday life especially in the south where they are popular?Check out Tulsa Oklahoma in 1921 if you get a chance, enlightening.

I fully support the movement for social justice for African Americans. Until their liberties and sanctity of life are recognized and respected and the terror that has been perpetuated against these people is stopped my country's soul and potential to heal will not happen.

There is a conspiracy theory that he is running at the request of the Trump campaign to siphon votes based on the fact that Ivanka was in Wyoming (where he recently bought a ranch) when he announced his run and Kanye has financially benefited from the Trump family.

That's too circumstantial to be hard evidence but I can't figure out why else he suddenly wants to run this late in the cycle. Unless it's just a manic episode...

The way it was told to me (I briefly dated one of the computer scientists on the UC Santa Cruz bioinformatics team--still friends with him so I can find out more if anyone is interested) was they (publically funded researchers) were *highly* driven to be first because they knew if it was patented, it would be a huge financial road block to addressing genetic disease in the future.

Of course, scientists need funding, but government funding is where a *lot* of basic research comes from and is an important step before a drug is ready to develop. Biotech isn't going to spend 30 years learning about the inner ear to then start preclinical trials. They work off the backs of publically funded basic research first.

Are you really making an argument that scientists -- a group laughably underpaid -- should be grateful that anyone funds them at all? According to https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Chemist/Salary , the average chemist salary is $56,281. Think about how important that job is.

Here's the actual truth. Religious zealots talk ad nauseam about prayer, but when push comes to shove, they are the first ones to steal all of the hard work of scientists.

If anything, scientists are economically oppressed and provide all of the actual value. But thank the good lord that some C level asshat knows how to market the scientist's cure for cancer.

Perhaps you didn't understand me, or the concept of how things work in a society with voluntary exchange. Being thankful has nothing to do with it. One party exchanges their goods and services for someone else's goods and services. Liberal scientists are no more righteous than a theoretical conservative industrialist. One side does not need to pleasure the other because I would argue the relationship is symbiotic and equal. Also, Donald Trump has helped to remove some of that red tape. It is of an absolute fact, capitalism has allowed for wealth to be produced at rates not seen throughout human history. This has allowed the resources to be moved from basic needs to the advanced sciences. No one owes anyone anything. I grew up with epidemiologists and biostatisticians. Super smart, nerdy, good at maths and left wing politics (social politics).
It was the same for the founders of the Manhattan project and the folks who won World War 2. They were then pursued as marxists and communists for decades because of McCarthy and uninformed and uneducated far right in the US.
Is what it is.

Many of the scientists on the Manhattan project were Jews and were hounded and persecuted wrongly, to be Bolsheviks and Communist sympathizers. That's how we thanked our scientists. A lot of the folks involved from hearing regeneration are Jews, Indians and Asians. I do hope the government doesn't turn on these folks too. I know they are sending foreign students in mass home now. Is that not xenophobia. Many of these folks are from India and China pursuing PhDs and involved in medical research. How does exiling them benefit America financially or intellectually?
