Human ear is pretty good at comparing sound levels. We judge absolute sound pressure quite poorly, but in AB test one decibel difference is usually recognized. So comparing by ear should get you into same ballpark. Of course comparing to 120dB environmental noise would be foolish and kind of bad...

No way your own voice goes to 120 dB with earplugs. I am too lazy to dig out any scientific proof, but anybody can test it by comparing 120dB noise with yelling with earplugs on. I can see how the occlusion effect could be a problem when you have hyperacusis though.

@Derbytia, I've had those thoughts too. It is a long tedious process, but after a while you will be just fine. The sound will lose its terror no matter how ugly it is. Just believe it.

It is a huge annoyance, but it won't define my life any more. I am not ok with it, but it won't stop me doing my thing any more. For the first 12 months or so it felt like a hot needle in my brain. That sensation gets duller little by little.

Remeron aka. Mirtazapine has helped me a lot. I need 1-2 more (than usual) hours of sleep with it though. Very small dose (7.5mg) does it for me. Sleep is crucial. Edit: sorry, no experience of the meds you mentioned.

I play gigs, my tinnitus have not got any worse or better. I use custom earplugs with 25 dB filters because my threshold of pain has reduced to 90 dBA. Do some experimenting, start slowly, you will find your way. All the best, -J

Martin, I would not say you have "very bad psychological problem regarding your tinnitus". Intrusive tinnitus takes the center stage for everyone who has it, until it becomes an old hat and distress fades. It will happen for you at some point too.

Hi Mick, I am sorry to hear about your recent problems. Remember, just because your earlier t did spread into other ear does not mean this time will be the same. Most probably it backs off as the infection resolves and fluid goes away. Meanwhile, isn't the 3kHz easier to mask than 13kHz at least?

Doctors often blame anxiety or stress for this kind of symptoms, but that is only because they have no clue. We have to face it: no-one has a clue, no-one knows if it will pass or get worse or stay like it is. All we know is that vast majority of people turn it into non-issue as time goes by...
